Turin - a journey in picturesMy first visit to Turin was in early spring of 2011. It was an unusually warm day and I decided to stroll down to River Po simply to enjoy a few moments of a beautiful day before setting out to explore Turin.While sitting there gazing at the river, the bridges, and the hills on the opposite side, I still remember how excited I was by being there, not only because of the wonderful scenery in front of me, but also because I felt an eager anticipation knowing that I was about to discover a new city in Italy.

Turin is the capital of the region of Piedmont. It is the home of FIAT and it used to be an industrial city with car production plants and steel mills and this gave it an undeserved reputation for being a rather grey city. First time visitors will be delighted to find numerous reasons to enjoy this city that is so full of history. It was the first capital of Italy after the unification in 1861 and for centuries Turin was the home of royalties of Italian and French decent. In many respects this has made Turin a city more French and continental looking than typically Italian. Some of the streets are wide like the French boulevards, there are bridges built by Napoleon, palaces in and around Turin that are heavily influenced by the French, as well as historic cafés with a different kind of style.

Turin is also the home of one of the most important religious relics in the world, the Holy Shroud. If you like chocolate then Turin is the place to visit as it is the chocolate capital of Italy with its own annual festival. Fans of football have all heard about Juventus, one of the most popular football clubs in the world. They are currently at the top of the Serie A league. In the characteristic-looking La Mole, the landmark building of Turin, you will find the National Cinema Museum and from the viewing platform you will have a great panoramic view of Turin and the Alps. To fully appreciate Turin’s unique geographical location a visit to the Superga hill just east of the city is highly recommended.

While in Turin you can go on daytrips to the majestic Alps in the Susa or Aosta Valley, or to the hilly and picturesque southern provinces with its countless vineyards and charming towns and villages.

Turin - a journey in pictures, aims at conveying personal impressions of places, monuments and buildings in a city that is waiting to be explored by the curious traveler. It is my hope that these pictures will inspire you the visit magical Turin!

Porta Nuova

STAZIONE

Porta Nuova station is situated almost right in the center of Turin and it dates from 1861, the year of the unification of Italy and when Turin became the first capital of Italy. The inner station area has been rebuilt and modernized several times, but the neo-gothic façade facing the busy Corso Vittorio Emanuele II is the same.

From Turin you can take trains to Milan, Roma and Genoa, as well as to Lyon and Paris. Several international connections also run from the new Porta Susa station in Turin. The nearest international airport is Milano Malpensa which can be reached either by airport shuttle bus directly or by train via Milan.

Arriving in Turin


Via RomaVia Roma is without doubt the most elegant street in Turin. It stretches from the park in front of Porta Nuova station to Piazza Castello and the Royal Palace. On both sides, under lofty and stylish arcades, you will find well known shops and exclusive brands.

Further up via Roma, just around the next corner from the Po and Dora sculptures and fountains, you will arrive at the so called living room of Turin, Piazza San Carlo, before the street becomes arcaded again, the last part with columns in black marble.


Half way up via Roma are two important sculptures and fountains, or rivers, River Po and Dora. The rivers run on either side of the city before they meet and become one, in Turin.


Piazza

San Carlo

Piazza San Carlo is Turin’s and possibly one of Europe’s most elegant piazzas. The Torinese call it the salotto, the living room. It was built in the years after 1637 and it was initially used as a parading ground and as a place for public meetings. The uniform style of the façade on the longer sides gives it an even and neutral background. The twin churches San Carlo and Santa Cristina on either side of via Roma underline the perfect symmetry of the piazza.


There are several well know cafès and restaurants under the spacious arcades on Piazza San Carlo, among them Cafè San Carlo (1842) and Caffè Torino (1903) with the bronze bull embedded in the pavement in front of the entrance.

In the middle of the piazza stands a bronze statue of one of the founders of Savoia dynasty, Emanuele Filiberto, also called “Iron head”.
