Standard solutions
The Turbine Protection System (TPS) is an electrical control and field sensor modernization package designed to replace the existing legacy protection system on steam turbines. The TPS can enhance turbine availability with features such as 2-out-of-3 voting for pressure and speed sensors.
Different option combinations can be incorporated within the core design, providing a customized solution built around the specific unit requirements.
The redundant testable trip device (below) combines vacuum, thrust, low bearing oil pressure and trip-block configuration in one freestanding unit.
The TPS system is available for both high- and low-pressure hydraulic systems. It can also be used in both power and industrial applications.

Turbine mechanical conversion
The standard conversion package involves a new trip system, where as the existing trip block and overspeed bolt are eliminated and replaced with a 2-out-of-3 voting architecture.
The panel contains new triplicated field devices for the parameters monitored. Each device within the panel is on-line testable. Field transmitters may be calibrated online. Most components are repairable/replaceable.
Low-pressure TPS can be easily and cost effectively upgraded to high-pressure TPS in the future if the plant changes from MHC to EHC after a low-pressure TPS has been installed.
Process configurations
A true 2-out-of-3 voting system, the standard TPS electronics packages consist of three processors monitoring all trip inputs. Each processor independently decides to issue a trip based on its set of inputs. All three of the processors share input and output status signals for alarming and testing functions.
For more information, please contact your local Siemens sales representative.
Optional processor configurations include:
Fault tolerant redundant processors
Simplex processor for cost-sensitive applications.
Available options
An upgraded user interface with color display and trending capability
Electronic turbine thrust proximitors to replace legacy mechanical systems
EHC interposing relays to allow for plant trips to be included in the first-out trip display
Zero speed detection
Mechanical-only package.
