Parking lf travelling bycar then park inthe main car park at Castleton, by the Information Centre. Refreshments on rcute There are only refreshment stops inthe villages of Hope and Castleton, so stock up belore you sel off. Route Before you set offon this walk take time to visit Peveril Castle and Treak Clitf Cavern. The view from the castle is worth the climb uol by the Castle Inn, then right again on a narrow lane just past the Youth Hosiel. Beyond a bridge the lane curves up tothe left then heads skaight on to become a stony path beyond cottages. Follow this path until you reach a road. Cross the road and go through a gate (or over the stile) and follow the path that leads tothe left, running parallel t0the road. This joins a track which leads toTreak Clifi Cavern. Take ihe steps beside the cavern and turn right t0 walk along the hillside - to arrive at Blue John Cavern. Cross the car park infront olthe cavern entrance and g0 through a gate tofollow the path uphill 10 a farm, turning right ata signpost. Follow the wall and go through a gate atthe corner ofthe tield, then straight on across the next field. Cross the road and go through a gate, then across the field to another road, through the gate opposite and up lhehill. G0 through another gate and up steps t0the road. B Go through a gale 0n the right and follow the stepped path tothe summit of Mam Tor. From the summit, as you l00k down towards Castleton, go down the obvious path 10 your left until you reach Hollins Cross, the junction o{several routes. Go straight onhere iowards the craggy top of Back Tor, crossing a stile and climbing the short steep slope t0 the summit. Continue along the path to thenext high point, Lose Hill Pike, with excellent views all around. From here bear right down the stone path to a stile. Cross the next stile, just ahead, then follow the Jence/old wall 0n your lett. soon tho path curves right past a group oftrees; just beyond them turn right, down to a stile and along the lield toa track. Follow this down to Spring House Farm. At this point decide whethet youwant tohead directly back to Castleton, orfollow the longer route down toHope with a riverside walk back to Castleton. ll going directly to Castleton, turn right after Spring Bank Farm along ariother track. Bear lett at the junction but at he next one go straight on, over a stile. After thenext stile bear very slightly left over a field and join a stony lane, emerging soon into a surfaced lane, gradually curving left down into Castleton. lf taking the slightly longer route, via Hope, iurn left when you get to Spring House Farm, belore the stable block, and pass through two small gates. Follow the route inan easterly direction across several fields,until you reach the footpath sign to Mam Tor via Lose Hill. Follow the sign t0 'Hope', along a route which isobvious, through fields and gales until you reach a small gale before some buildings. Pass through the gate buld0not turn right. Keep straight 0n towalk behind the house. Go through the squeeze stile then on to cross a stile and over the railway t0 cross lhenext stile. Continue ahead across five small lields and gates. Turn left along theroad and atthe T-junction turn right and follow into Hope. 0nmeeting the main road, turn right then ina lewmetres left, down Pindale Road. After 250 metres, turn right ata footpath sign (no. 36) to cross a stile onto the palh above Peakshole Waler. Follow this path for about'/, miles crossing four stiles and the railway, then keeping straight on. Cross the fifth stile and continue ahead through more Iour more stiles, into a track which takes you down tothe main road. Turn left here and walk back int0 Castleton. continued overleaf...
