Tung  Chung  situates at  the  northern  part  of  the  Lantau  Island,  the  largest  Island  in  Hong Kong.  It  connects  with  Kowloon  and  the  New  Territories  South  via  Route  8  Expressway, linking the Airport, Tung Chung, Disneyland, Tsing Yi and ShaGn.

Tung Chung is a new suburb town in Lantau Island which is near the Hong Kong InternaGonal Airport.  Since  the  society  of  Tung  Chung  is  newly  developed,  there’re  a  few  interesGng elements  which  a^ract  people,  such  as  Citygate  Outlet,  UA  Cinemas,  the  excellent accommodaGon,  Novotel  Hotel.  Ngnong  Ping  360  Cable  Cars,  Ngnong  Ping  Big  Buddha, hiking trails and etc.        Citygate is the first outlet mall in Hong Kong, there’re more than 80 internaGonal brands 

offering discounts from 30% to 70% on designer fashion, sports, beauty, accessories, children’s wear and home items. There’s also a Asia’s largest kineGc fountain sidng in front of Citygate Outlet.          AccommodaGng  in Novotel Hotel gives  you the enjoyment 

of  spectacular  vies  from  the  Ngnong  Ping  Cable  Car  and discover  bargain  shopping  at  Citygate  Outlets,  both  are doorstep.  Features  meeGng  faciliGes,  two  fabulous restaurants,  one  of  them  is  a  buffet  which  is  always  full booked  even  3  months  further,  a  bar,  a  24‐hour  gym  and pool, wonderful suites with  sea  view and the view of Hong Kong  InternaGonal Airport  and Ngnong Ping  Cable  car.  It  is only  5  minutes  from  Airport  and  AsiaWorld‐Expo.  With direct  access  to  MTR,  it  takes  only  30  minutes  to  the  city centre and  Hong kong  Disneyland  is  2  stops away.  There  is also shu^le buses transporGng customers.

Relative LocationTung Chung is a very convenient place to go. If you are gedng there by MTR, you can 

simply take the Tung Chung line and get off at Tung Chung staGon, the whole journey from Central  to  Tung  Chung  takes  only  26  minutes.  Get  to  exit  C,  and  you  will  find  Citygate Outlets right in  front of you. If you get off the DB bus at the last staGon, you will be at the Tung Chung Town Center Bus Terminus. You will be right in front of the Citygate Outlets, but in order to get there, you have to walk pass the entrance of  Food Republic, and then  turn lei to get there. 

You can nearly find everything you need in Tung Chung. To get to the cinema, you can easily spot the place which is next to the Asia’s largest water fountain with splashing water and  colorful  flashing lights, and  the UA cinema will be there. In Citygate Outlets, you  can find a lot of bouGques. Also, you can find Taste which is a really big supermarket, it’s at the first basement floor of Citygate. And  if you want to have a  simple, cheap  but good meal, you can go to the Food Republic food court which is  located on the third floor. The Novotel CiGgate Hong Kong Hotel  is  connected  to  the Citygate Outlets which makes tourists  really easy to find it, you can get to the third floor where Esprit, Calvin Klein, OpGcal 88 is located, there’s a escalator next to Calvin Klein which leads you to a long path with dimming lights. You will see Pacific Coffee, and all you have to do  is walk along the path Gl the end where you will find another escalator to Novotel.

The nearest clinic  is right outside exit A, near to Hung Fook Tong, that’s the Human Health Clinic. There’s a local wet market which is  right across the footbridge of Citygate on the second floor next to McDonald’s which  leads  you  to the Fu Tung Plaza, it only  takes 5 minutes  to  walk. You walk  straight Gll you  see Maple,  then you  go down  the escalator  in front of it. Aier that, there will be an entrance with glass doors where fresh meat, fresh sea food,  vegetables,  fruits,  medicine,  even  tailor  shops  will  be  found.  There’re  three  two salons in the Fu Tung Plaza, there is one right next to the Maple fashion shop and one next to a local restaurant at the far end on the first floor. Fu Tung Plaza is more of  a local mall, there  you  can  find  a  lot  of  cheap  products  and  local  food.  Tung  Chung  is  really  a  self‐sufficient  society  where you  can  find  everything  you  need  simply  by walking  for  a  short distance.

Human Characteristics  As menGoned before, Tung Chung is a self‐sufficient society, you can find everything in the area which is really convenient, unlike on Hong Kong Island, you will have to travel around just to get stuff for daily use. That’s why faciliGes are built for people living in Tung Chung, like residenGal, insGtuGonal, recreaGonal, etc.

  There is a lot of people living in Tung Chung, approximately 220000 people. Some of  them live in  public housing estates, and most of  them live  in private housing estates. There are about three big public housing estates, which are  Fu  Tung Estate, Yu  Tung Court, and  Yat Tung Estate. There  are  about  7  big  private  housing  estates, which  are,  Le  Bleu  Deux,  Costal  Skyline,  Costal Skyline  Le  Bleu  House,  La  Rossa,  Caribbean  Coast,  Seaview  Cresent,  Tung  Chung  Cresent.  The Developer of  Le Bleu  Deux  is  HKR InternaGonal  Limited, which  is  also  one  of  the developer  of  Costal Skyline, Costal Skyline Le Bleu House, and La Rossa. Maybe because of that reason, Le Bleu Deux, Costal Skyline, and Costal Skyline Le Bleu House share the same clubhouse which is behind Costal Skyline. Some of the housings are high‐rise, some of them are mid‐rise, and some of them are  houses, which  allows  people to  choose from different environments. For example,  if people come from UK, it’s probably hard for them to get used to living in high‐rise buildings, so they might want to choose houses.

For recreaGonal use, there’s  quite a big park  behind Novotel  CiGgate Hong Kong and  in  front of Seaview Cresent. It’s called the Man Tung Road Park, you can find a lot of elderly doing exercises there in the morning. As for the Citygate Outlets, you can find a lot of products, from clothing to food, from accessories to body products. If you want to find cheaper products or local products, you can go  to  Fu  Tung Plaza and  the wet market underneath which  is  built mainly  for locals, or low‐income  families who live  in the public housing estates. Even though they are at low prices, they are all in good quality, you  can find bouGques, salon, pharmacy, tailor shops, etc. It’s  really easy for elderly to go there to get anything they need, since they can’t really travel to far places.  This  self‐sufficient  community  can  really  give  its  people  what  they  need,  even entertainment, so personally I pre^y like the idea of having all the faciliGes all in one place.

         Since a high populaGon live in Tung Chung, there has to be some schools around, so students can easily  find  schools  in  the  area. Even  different  kinds  of  schools  can  be found there,  it’s pre^y surprising how many schools are there just inside Tung Chung. Primary schools  there include Ching Chung Hau  Po Woon Prmary School, Po  On Commercial  AssociaGon Wan Ho Kan Primary School, Tung Chung Public School, The SalvaGon Army Lam Bu^ Chung Memorial School, HKFEW Wong Cho Bau School, Tung Chung Catholic School, Ling Liang Church Sau Tak Primary School, Ho Yu Primary School  Sponsored by  Sik Sik Yuen. And secondary schools  include Ho  Yu  College Sponsored by  Sik Sik Yuen, PLK Mrs Ma Kan Ming Cheung Food  Sien College, Tung Chung Catholic School, YMCA of Hong Kong ChrisGan  College, Ling Liang Church  E Wun  Secondary School, HKFEW Wong Cho  Bau Secondary  School, and Caritas  Charles  Vath College.  It’s  really  convenient for them, because  they can  just  in  Tung Chung  in  the weekdays,  since  Tung Chung  is  kind  of  far  away  from  other  really urban areas.

Cultural CharacteristicsTung Chung is  a community which provide an ideal  condiGon for residents. As  it is  a newly developed town, a  lot of new residents  have a  high expectaGon that  they  can have a  happy  and  safe life  there.  Besides,  Tung Chung  is the most populated area  in Lantau Island and the fastest growing town in Hong Kong. Due  to the rapid growth, a  lot of faciliGes have to be  synchronized and get  along  according  to the expansion of populaGon and what  has  changed within the community.

        Tung Chung has the populaGon of a  hundred thousand since  the development  in 1997. As  there is  an increasing amount of people moving  into the  community, more housings and faciliGes  are added  in order to fulfil  the desire of ideal  living.  The development of Tung Chung town started since 1994 as  Gme goes  on,  there’re eight major  housing, twenty nine villages, three shopping centers, three kindergartens, eight primary schools, seven secondary schools, two integrated social  service  centres, a library, a sports  centre, a  district enquiry centre, and a health care  centre,  together with the fire service, police  staGon, post office  and a  swimming pool  which will  be  opened in April  2011. These faciliGes and services bring residents convenience and create a peaceful  community.

    To me, there is a huge difference between living in Discovery Bay and Tung Chung. 

Living  in  Tung  Chung  gives me  the  feeling  that  I’m  connected  to  everywhere  in  HK  because  of  the  environment, transportaGon and the harmony  community. Although it  is  a small  community  and there is  a  great distance between Tung Chung and another town, what is provided in Tung Chung can fulfil our daily necessiGes. 

• To begin with transportaGon. There’s  public bus  stops  around Tung Chung, taxis  and a MTR staGon at the  center of Tung Chung which transport people to every parts  in Hong Kong which is  completely different from Discovery Bay.

• Second,  it’s  only  walking distance for people to travel  from one place  to another  in Tung Chung which is  fairly convenient and delighqul. 

‐ 15 minutes maximum to walk from Citygate to Costal Skyline

‐ 20 minutes maximum from Citygate to Caribbean Coast

‐ 10 minutes from Citygate to Yu Tung Estate

‐ 20 minutes from Citygate to Yat Tung Estate

‐ There are  also shu^le buses  transferring residents  of Caribbean Coast  to and from MTR staGon and Caribbean Coast.

• Moreover,  Tung  Chung  is  a  small  community,  though;  it  provides most  of what  people  need  for  their  daily necessiGes. There are  supermarkets  and local  markets  sell  products with reasonable  prices  and people  would’ve got an ideal bargain in the local  wet markets.  There’s  everything in a  shopping centre  including fashion shops, restaurants, staGonary  shops, salons, bakeries, supermarkets, convenient stores, banks, pharmacy and all  sorts of shops that brings people convenience.

• Thirdly, as  a  community  containing one  hundred thousand residents should have several  faciliGes provided for them. There’s a  government mulGpal service building including a  library, sports centre, a  student study, gym and all sorts of entertainment rental places which is built in the year of 2010.

    On the other hand, living in Discovery Bay is completely different from Tung Chung. DB gives me the feeling of being  isolated  in an  island  that  does not  have  much  entertainment  and  faciliGes and  it  does  not  feel  like  a community, although there’re restaurants, supermarkets, clubhouses and transportaGons. 

• Firstly, when people want  to get  fresh food,  they will  have  to either go to HK  Island or Tung Chung,  it takes a long Gme and requires a certain amount of money for travelling. 

• Secondly,  transportaGon is also another issue  for people who lives in Discovery Bay and has to Kowloon or HK Island for school and work. There’s MTR, buses and taxies that can reach anywhere in HK, but in DB, it takes a long Gme to transfer to ferry or external buses to reach transportaGons in Central, Tung Chung or Sunny Bay. It is very limited for people to travel and they have to take plenty of Gme to travel in order to reach their desGnaGon. 

•Thirdly, the faciliGes in Discovery Bay are definitely faulty. Although there’re 4 clubhouses and swimming pools, gym, reading room and other sorts  of sports court, it does not fulfil what people wanted and the membership fee is very expensive which does not worth it. 

•However, the environment in Discovery Bay is be^er than that of in Tung Chung indeed. Fresh and green mountains and a blue  sea without edge surround DB.  As I’ve been living  in there for 14 years and in Tung Chung for 1 year, a serious problem appeared is  that, throughout the year, I  always have windpipe illness; but I didn’t when I was in DB. Thus, it means that the air polluGon in Tung Chung is detrimental because of the Hong Kong InternaGonal Airport and construcGons along the harbour.

• Finally,  is the price  of products  in Discovery Bay.  The products are very expensive  that  is  about double price of different  individuals, which are sold outside Discovery Bay while the  products are exactly the same as what is without DB. People who live in DB could not really afford all  of what they wanted and yet, they would rather travel to other places to purchase the same product.

    

Tung Chung is  a pleasant community to live in which brings people convenience and can be separated from the crowded urban city. Although it  takes Gme  to travel  from Discovery College  to Tung Chung,  it  is also an  ideal opGon to choose Tung Chung as a good place to live in.

Physical CharacteristicsPhysical CharacterisGcs of Tung Chung

‐ Mountains‐ Sea (south china sea)‐ Flat grounds for construcGon use‐ Near airports and ship ports

Although Tung Chung is an urban landscape, surrounding it is a lot of undeveloped rural areas, including mountains, streams and flat grounds. Mountains, which were within the boundaries of the city, have been leveled to create a be^er living environment for the people. There is a low‐leveled mountain located between the Caribbean Coast and the old fishing village. On top of this mountain, lies a great view of Tung Chung’s mountain, sea, village and residenGal view. There are a few flat grounds around Tung Chung, reserved for construcGonal use, For example, the ground east west of the mountain, is reserved for a Hospital  and along the coast of Tung Chung near the harbor is reserved for a new residenGal estate.

Around some of the leiover rural areas of Tung Chung, there are mangroves and freshwater streams, which provides excellent ecological habitats for various valuable species of freshwater fish, dragonflies and some rare species of amphibians. One of the most well known streams in Tung Chung is the Tung Chung Stream; it has been recorded to be the only place in Hong Kong, where Acrossocheilus Beijiangensis (rare fish) and Crested Kingfisher (rare bird), can be found. 

     

As Tung Chung is based on the Shore of Lantau Island, there is a scheduled ferry to Tai O and Tuen Mun. The sea view, of the Northern Lantau Coast is home to the Chinese White Dolphin and the ferry towards Tai O provides a clear impressive view. Tung Chung’s landscape is only a bridge away from the Hong Kong InternaGonal Airport, making airplane transports and travels quite convenient.

Tourism

The MTR is a railway system, which brings most of the locals and tourists to and from Tung Chung. As  it reaches out to almost every place in Hong Kong, even  local Hong Kong people would come shopping in Tung Chung’s Citygate Outlet Mall. At the top of the MTR map, the bright blue line is the railway, which goes to China’s  immigraGon borders, where mainland people arrive. The Hong Kong InternaGonal Airport is  also  one of the  staGons  in  the MTR system, which allows  travelers and tourists to easily travel around Hong Kong, just by using a simple Gcket.

The Ngong Ping 360O Cable Car is another transport vehicle, which goes back and forth between Tung Chung and Ngong Ping, where the Big Buddha, a magnificent architecture lies. It is one of Hong Kong’s most visited tourists a^racGons, therefore Tung Chung is a great desGnaGon, as tourists may choose to take the cable car instead of a bumpy bus ride through the hills. The cable car’s route is above mountains, giving passengers a splendid view of Tung Chung and Lantau Island’s physical characterisGcs. The name 360O demonstrates that the cable car’s route towards Ngong Ping travels in a circular way, the reason why is because Lantau’s geographical characterisGcs possesses a lot of undeveloped areas and mountains, therefore the cable car is the quickest known way to travel to and from Tung Chung, as it travels above mountains.

There are over 10 public buses in Tung Chung, which goes to the New Territories, Kowloon and Hong Kong Island. These buses have similar prices, however there are buses, which pass through Tung Chung to the Airport, and they are a bit more expensive. Besides these main buses, there are local buses, which goes to Tai O, Mui Wo, Hong Kong Disneyland, Discovery Bay and Pui O. These buses travels all around Lantau Island but they all stop at the Tung Chung Bus Stop, making Tung Chung a place with excellent transportaGon and brings convenience to travelers and tourists. Moreover, as Tung Chung is less crowded than most places in Hong Kong, transportaGon is very comfortable and there aren’t much queues to line up in. Taxis’ are quite convenient too, as there are two types of taxis’ in Tung Chung. One is the Red HK taxi and the other is the Blue Lantau taxi, the difference between them is that the Red taxi, can go anywhere around HK except for some private boundaries in Lantau, however on the other hand, the Blue taxi is permi^ed to go into these areas but they must stay only in Lantau Island. This allows Tung Chung’s transportaGon to ease up.

Human Environmental Interaction

I am  in  favor of all the faciliGes  in Tung Chung currently  and  in the future. I believe that all of the faciliGes  in  Tung Chung bring convenience and other good  factors  to the  residents  and  tourists  of Tung Chung. The TransportaGon in Tung Chung is magnificent as  there are various choices of public buses  and  the MTR, which  allows  people  to  travel  to  other  places  quickly  and  conveniently.  The new  Library  would  bring more  choices  of  researching and  knowledge  to  residents  living  in  Tung Chung. In addiGon, the currently construcGng Swimming Pool and Government funding Sports hall would  give  different  choices  of  exercise,  sports  and  fun  acGviGes  to  the  people  of  Tung Chung including tourists and residents. These faciliGes allows residents to be able to socialize more, as well as  raising the economy and  amount of  tourists  that  is  coming  to  Tung Chung, as  they  are public faciliGes, even non‐residents can go. The new and finished skate park  located near the residenGal areas would allow young people like teenagers to enjoy outdoor acGviGes and give them a chance of  socializing  more  with  new  people  and  friends.  As  more  people  are  living  in  Tung  Chung nowadays,  the  new  hospital  will  decrease  the  amount  of  Gme  needed  to  travel  to  a  further distanced  hospital  and  this  might  save  a  lot more  people, bringing  convenience  to  elderly  and pregnant woman for consistent monthly checkups. Overall, I think that the faciliGes in Tung Chung will  not  only  bring  convenience  and  comfort  to  the  residents  of  Tung  Chung  but  also  raise  the economy state and amount of tourists in Tung Chung.

I do not support having too many facilities in Tung Chung because most housing estates have club houses, they do not need to go to public ones. People living in public housing estates are mostly elderly, they cannot really use the facilities. Also, tourists living in other districts will not go all the way to Tung Chung in order to use the swimming pools or other facilities.                                                                                                                        - Harriet Lai

I am in favour having facilities in Tung Chung especially swimming pool which will be opened in April 2011. It brings convenience to residents since they dont have to travel to Tsing Yi, closest, for swimming. It can as well increase income to the community as the pool is a government facility and it would not cost a lot. It increase the interaction within the community which swimming teams and events can be held. It benefit to both residents and community. However,
