Chellsie Memmel made a big splash onto

the world stage of gymnastics when she

became a last minute member of the 2003

US Women’s World Team. She has written

an account of the team’s experience

during those championships.

Chellsie’s connection to Tumbl Trak™

began when Doug Davis, Tumbl Trak’s

owner and founder, was one of her

mother’s coaches between the years of

1970-75. In 1991, when Chellsie was

just 3 ½, Tumbl Trak™ began recording

her gymnastics learning. There are videos

DURING THE PAN AM GAMES in early August 2003, I was invited to Karolyi’s Ranch in Texas for preparation camp for the World Championship. I knew there were already seven top gymnasts there [Courtney Kupets, Carly Patterson, Tasha Schwikert, Hollie Vise, Annia Hatch, Ashley Postell, Terin Humphrey]. Six of them were pretty much a sure thing for the US Team and only one alternate receives a credential to train with the team. On the last day of camp, when the US Team was announced, I was surprised to hear my name as 1st alternate!

After our preparation ended at The Ranch, we all arrived in California where we continued to train. It was now mid-August and equipment was set up in several sites. I remember one site smelled like a barn and we later learned it had been used before us as a circus tent. Unfortunately, after only a few days, Ashley started feeling sick and didn’t get better. When our coaches decided she probably wouldn’t be able to compete, they told me I was on the team. I could not believe it! At the age of 15, I felt terrible for Ashley but was ready to step up and do my job for the team.

I was nervous as our team faced the next big hurdle—podium training at Arrowhead Pond. This training is like a mock competition, and it’s the first and only time we are allowed to touch the equipment in the arena before the real thing. The judges are there to get an idea of our routines so it’s very important to have a great podium workout. It went well for us and we were feeling good. Then my heart sank as I learned about more bad luck for our team. Annia tore her ACL on vault. It is so hard to see a teammate go down with a devastating injury. Now Terin, who had been 2nd alternate, was on the team and there were NO alternates left to spare!

Prelims actually went pretty well and we finished second behind China. I was thrilled to have qualified to all-around, bars and beam finals. Then, on the off-day between prelims and finals, believe it or not, our team met with more misfortune—Courtney tore her Achilles on floor. With both alternates used, we were forced to compete in finals with five athletes, instead of six. The format of finals is more difficult than pre-lims. Three athletes are chosen from the six to compete in one event and all three scores count. There is no room for error.

It was at this point that we realized we’d been through so much as a team, but we still felt like we had potential to medal if we hit. We wanted to put everything on the floor, not just for ourselves, but also for our teammates who weren’t able to compete with us. We rallied as a team and nailed our routines. We finished before China and waited anxiously to see if our scores would hold. When China finished, our scores were still on top! It was one of the greatest feelings—to take my place on top of the award stand with my teammates as we became the first US Women’s Gymnastics Team to take home gold at a World Championships!

A GOLDEN TEAM WITH NONE TO SPARE

CHELLSIE MEMMEL The following is an account of the 2003 World Championships where the US Women’s team realized their first gold medal, EVER. The account was written by team member, Chellsie Memmel. Chellsie went on to win all-around in the 2005 World Championships and win a silver team medal at the 2008 Olympic Games.

Booster BlocksThe Booster Blocks are another great example of Tumbl Trak’s “Smart Mat Technology.” The Booster Blocks have special Velcro™ placement along the edges that allow them to be connected side-by-side, end-to-end or on top of one another. Alone or together, they can be useful as spotting blocks and training stations for beam, tumbling, and vaulting. Air BarrelThe Air Barrel is a very simple, yet extremely versatile, multi-purpose training device. While it may look like a foam octagon or barrel, it is filled with air and is BOUNCY, helping with drills that cannot be done with traditional foam shapes. The Air Barrel can be used for tumbling, vaulting, bar and vault skills and teaches body awareness and control. The Cradles are used to stabilize the Air Barrel for a variety of drills, but also make great pre-school shapes when used by themselves. Cheer Floors/Carpet Bonded FoamThe carpet bonded Trocellen rolls that we sell are the finest, portable matting available and have been used with great results for over 15 years. Our manu-facturer is only one, of very few, that laminate the carpet to the foam. A standard competition floor is 42’ x 42’ and takes (7) rolls that are 6’ x 42’ each. However, many competitions are now using 54’ x 42’ floors which require 9 rolls. A roll of blue 4” hook Velcro™ (for connecting the rolls together) is included with your purchase. If your space or budget doesn’t allow for an entire floor, you can also purchase single rolls providing a safer practice area. Safety should be everyone’s highest priority and must be given serious consideration. Our carpet ships in 3-5 days with cardboard to help prevent damage. FLEXI-ROLL® Floor Mat Systems are also available—made with the same quality materials as the standard roll floors. The unique way that the Flexi-Roll® floor rolls up makes this system revolutionary.
