ADVANCE AUSTRALIA FAIR

Australians all let us rejoice, For we are young and free; We’ve golden soil and wealth for toil; Our home is girt by sea; Our land abounds in nature’s gifts Of beauty rich and rare; In history’s page, let every stage Advance Australia Fair. In joyful strains then let us sing, Advance Australia Fair. Beneath our radiant Southern Cross We’ll toil with hearts and hands; To make this Commonwealth of ours Renowned of all the lands; For those who’ve come across the seas We’ve boundless plains to share; With courage let us all combine To Advance Australia Fair. In joyful strains then let us sing, Advance Australia Fair. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT 2014 has been a significant year for our school, students and staff. Our achievements have been astonishing and our progress in taking our school deep into the 21st Century has been both challenging and satisfying. Our 2013 Higher School Certificate results were amongst the best our students have achieved for nearly 10 years, with 4 Band 6 results and 22 Band 5 results. Since the end of 2013, we have moved into the Compressed Curriculum with our senior students. The Compressed Curriculum gave us everything we thought we would get from it – more classes in the senior school and subsequently more choice for our students. Examples are aplenty; the option to do Ancient and Modern History, Physics and Chemistry, Business and Legal Studies, a full choice of Mathematics and English levels – rather than students being forced to make a choice between one or the other. Students continue to have the option to undertake TVET through the Riverina Institute in Wagga and we have deliberately created a curriculum pathway for students who do not wish to gain an ATAR. Of course, the 2014 Higher School Certificate results will not be available until the end of the school year, so the actual data on how students undertaking the Compressed Curriculum performed compared to their traditional counterparts who completed year 12 this year is not yet known. Anecdotally, the number of “first-in-course” performances was evenly spread throughout the two cohorts.

College II students are now in the process of undertaking their second set of courses, whilst College I have taken on the task of senior study in three new courses. Our students have again excelled in a wide variety of sports, performing arts and extra-curricula activities – including ICAS tests. The number of students enrolled in our school has remained fairly stable for the past five years, with our total enrolment sitting around the 180 mark. This has meant consistency for our teaching staff and our subsequent levels of staffing. The “Reform Agenda” as it is known, will continue to roll out across all public schools in the coming years, giving Principals greater autonomy and flexibility to lead and manage our schools. Local Schools Local Decisions, the Resource Allocation Model (RAM), and the new model for school planning will enable schools to work with their communities to better meet the needs of the students we serve. Our ongoing work with the Literacy Continuum and our ability to identify specific areas of a student’s literacy strength or deficit has improved the ability of our teachers to meet your student’s needs. We continue to provide training and leadership for schools from across the region and remain the only school in New South Wales which has produced and distributed a literacy-specific report to students and parents. We are in a very strong position as a school to provide an exceptional education to students from the drawing area. Tumbarumba High School continues to be the school of choice for in excess of 90% of the students who live in the area. I am very confident in the ability of our teachers to deliver a quality education, where all students are valued for their skills and abilities, and the achievement of excellence is a very real possibility for any student who attends our school, both now and into the future. Finally, I would like to recognise the hard work by our executive, teachers, administrative and support staff, who have worked diligently together to ensure our school’s continuing success. Mr D Crelley Principal P & C REPORT The Parents and Citizens’ Association (P&C) of Tumbarumba High School brings parents, staff and other members of the community together, to advance the best interests of the school and its students. The P&C plays an important role in supporting the school by raising funds to provide facilities and equipment for the school. Thank you to the few dedicated parents and staff who have attended meetings throughout the year. Your attendance and contribution are very much appreciated. The P&C encourages the participation of all parents and welcomes any member of the community to attend these meetings, which are held on the third Wednesday of the month at 7.00 pm in the Conference Room. This is a

valuable meeting gaining information about what is happening at the school and also an opportunity to have input into the future direction of the school to benefit your child/children. The P&C has contributed to a number of projects this year for the school, including:

• $6,000 towards Data Projectors

• $2,000 towards Cattle Crush • Donations of $500 towards cost of Year 10 Career Education Program (Lizzy Wagner Day and

Resume Writing Workshop), $50 to the Royal Far West Annual Appeal and $500 donation towards the 2013 Presentation Night.

• Provided morning tea for SRC induction assembly and year 12 formal assembly

• Our biggest commitment for this year would be $12,000 for new outdoor seating. The majority of the above contributions were made possible from the very generous donation of

$120,000 from the Estate of the Late Ian Giles. The P&C has been very diligent with the money and careful not to spend it on things other than to directly benefit the students of our school. We currently still have $98,435 invested and with careful decision making in the future, hopefully we will have this money benefiting future students for many years to come.

Wishing everyone a safe and happy festive season and look forward to your company in 2015. Mrs M Anderson P&C President SPORTS REPORT 2014 at Tumbarumba High School has seen continued enthusiasm and achievement with students participating in a range of sporting activities and competitions. Throughout the year, Tumbarumba High School has maintained an excellent attitude towards learning new sports and developing teams to represent in school competitions. From junior to senior students, Tumbarumba has been represented at the school, zone, regional and state levels in sports ranging from girls cricket to lawn bowls, athletics, cross country, swimming, netball, rugby league and touch football, AFL, tennis, table tennis, volleyball and soccer. This year Tumbarumba High School has seen many individual achievements in the sporting arena. The year began with several records being broken at the local swimming carnival. Zakk Stewart and Kane Stewart both broke the 200m freestyle records for their respective age groups. This year saw the rise of new house champions Barton ending their losing streak whilst also ending the reign of previous champions Hughes and Parkes. Another sporting arena that saw some great achievements this year was Cross Country. Lucas Shore performing beyond his own expectations and qualified for State Cross Country. This is an exceptional achievement for a small school.

Tumbarumba High School students represented themselves well at trials for Riverina CHS representative teams. This year Alexander Crelley was selected for the Under 15’s Combined High Schools AFL team. This is an excellent effort and the school is proud of you. This year Tumbarumba High School’s dance group travelled to Sydney to perform at Wakakirri. Students were awarded “Best School in Public”, “Best Cast and Ensemble in NSW” and “Best use of Projection”. Training for this event required endless hours of practice and students giving up their lunchtimes. Congratulations to all those students who participated and Mrs Jackson for organising this event. This year a group of eight students consisting of Lily Murphy, Asheleigh Dodwell, Danielle Bradley, Jock Rixon, Grace Daisley, Angel Horsley, Brianna McAuliffe and Paige McNeilly competed in the Equestrian Interschool Sports Championship. At this event, they represented the school with distinction. Asheleigh Dodwell was awarded both Age Champion and Sporting Champion. Brianna McAuliffe was named Champion Rider. Thank you to Ms Coleman for her enthusiastic organisation. Students are to be commended on their display of sportsmanship supporting team mates and other competitors. An excellent effort. The school is proud of you. This year has also seen a rise in the popularity of soccer amongst junior students with the introduction of an interschool soccer competition. Outside of school, students continue to be involved and achieve in many sports at representative levels. Paris Crelley was selected for the NSW Academy 11 girls’ cricket team. Steven Hoffman was also selected to represent in the Under 16’s Upper Hume Cricket Representative team. The Under 16’s girls’ league tag and Under 16’s boys’ AFL teams were both runners up in their respective competitions. Well done to all students for a fantastic effort. The school is proud of you. All students are to be congratulated for continued participation in sport. Those who have represented the school are role models to other students. Your sportsmanship, integrity and effort have been excellent and are a credit to you. We encourage students to participate in a wide range of sports. With continued enthusiasm and support for new sports, 2015 looks likely to give rise to more student representatives. Good luck and enjoy your sport. Miss K Guthrie Sports Organiser
