Reflections on the Qur’anCommentaries on the Selected Verses

ISBN: 9781597842648

6 x 9 inches / 280 pages

$18,95 / paperback

SPRING 2012

The Qur’an is the final word of God revealed to

humanity through Prophet Muhammad. It was not

meant to address the seventh century Arab soci-

ety, but to all humans for all times. This nature

of Islam’s holy book brings along a continuous

study of it so that its injunctions are reinterpre-

ted according to constantly changing times and

conditions of our world. This book presents such

interpretations from a respected Muslim scholar

who explains verses for the modern age. Gülen is

well-informed of the classical exegetical discip-

line, nevertheless in this book he keeps his exp-

lanations short and to the point, not to tire away

readers. The book does not cover all the verses of

the Qur’an, but selected ones, those relate most

to the human existence on earth, life after death,

and stories revealed in the holy book.

Nimah Ismail Nawwab

From the heartland of Islam arise poems of fiery

love and peace, composed by a modern-day female

poet descended from a long line of Meccan (from

Mecca) scholars. Reflecting the pulsing, indivisible

bridge of the works of great Sufi mystics and poets

to modern times, these spiritual pieces recall the

beloved works of Rabi‘ah Al ‘Adawiyyah, Rumi and

Hafiz.

From the land of Arabia where Sufism has been

long cloaked in mystery, despite its early roots

stemming in the very City of the Prophet, this

volume serves to transcend time through filling the

existing gap between the early beginnings and the

little-known Sufi traditions of current-day puritani-

cal Arabia.

These poems also highlight the global and local Sufi

spirit enlivening the younger generation. The shed-

ding of the ego, humility and the quest for spiritual

heights are glimpsed in this rare volume of verse.

Drawing on a rich religious legacy and led by the

Sufi tradition seeking Unity, the poems cover as-

pects related to spirituality and present-day chal-

lenges. The inspiring combination of the traditional

and modern in these compositions will touch the

inner souls and captivate the hearts of those inte-

rested in Higher Love in these turbulent times of

transition and frantic search for peace.

Nimah Ismail Nawwab is an editor, poet, photographer, lecturer, and youth empowerment leader from Saudi Arabia. Her previous book, The Unfurling, was published in the U.S. in 2004, and was listed as a best-seller in poetry. Nawwab has contributed to several publications internationally with work featured at major international media outlets including Newsweek Internati-onal, The Washington Post, BBC World News, Asian Age and various others. She continues to deliver workshops on poetry composition, appreciation and critiquing, and various genres of writing including creative writing and jour-nalism. She also lectures on a range of subjects including poetry, the Middle East, women and youth empowerment at various global venues.

Aisha The Wife, the Companion, the Scholar

Reşit Haylamaz

This book portrays one of the most significant

personalities in the history of Islam. Taking the

misunderstandings and defamation about her into

consideration, Aisha needs to be understood cor-

rectly. This study by Dr Reşit Haylamaz, an expert

on the life of the Prophet and his leading Compa-

nions, reflects her life in various aspects based on

reliable reports. The book clarifies her critical role

at establishing the Islamic teaching, with parti-

cular reference to her role in the transmission of

private matters concerning women and marital re-

lations, as well as recording the authentic sayings

of the Prophet. As her sensitivity at practicing

religion is related in a rich variety of examples,

much disputed issues like her marriage age and

her stance about Ali ibn Abi Talib are covered in

separate topics.

Dr. Reşit Haylamaz is the editor-in-chief of

Kaynak Publishing Group in Istanbul. He is the

author of numerous best-selling books on the life

of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him,

Belief and Unbelief: Discussions and

Comparisons vividly demonstrates the true

natures of and difference between belief

and unbelief through both concrete and ra-

tional arguments and producing the human

conscience and basic nature as witnesses,

especially through comparisons of belief

and unbelief, of right guidance and misgu-

idance.

Using easily understood stories, compari-

sons, and explanations, the author produ-

ces categorical proofs, showing that mo-

dern scientific discoveries actually support

and reinforce the truths of faith. Nursi uses

the Qur’anic methodology of addressing

each person’s intellect, and other inner

and outer faculties, to encourage people to

study the universe and its functioning in

order to understand creation’s true nature

and purposes, which will, in turn, lead

to learning the Attributes of the One and

only Creator as well as their own duties as

God’s servants.

eth century Turkish scholar of Islam and

Shahada Sharelle Abdul Haqq

Islamic tradition praises Asiya, Mary, Khadija,

and Fatima as the four women who showed

monumental examples of excellence in faith.

While Mary, the mother of Jesus, is the only

woman mentioned by name in the Qur’an, the

other three are mentioned in the sayings of

the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him.

Asiya was the wife of Pharaoh and she was

the one who protected Moses in the palace

from the wrath of her furious husband. Mary

is the epitome of purity and submission, who

was miraculously blessed with Jesus, and she

stood firm against all kinds of slanders and

accusations. Khadija was the first believer

to the Prophet Muhammad. She was the

one who covered him blanket in the trau-

matic shock immediately after the first the

revelation. She spent all her fortune in her

husband’s cause, including her life. Fatima,

the Prophet’s daughter, is the person through

whom the Prophet’s generation still continu-

es. This book depicts the lives of these four

remarkable women of the human history.

world and the next.

Bediüzzaman Said Nursi was a

Bediüzzaman Said Nursi”Wonder of the Age“

Ramazan Balcı

In the many dimensions of his lifetime

of achievement as well as in his perso-

nality and character, Bediüzzaman Said

Nursi (1877–1960) was and, through his

continuing influence, still is an important

thinker and writer in the Muslim world.

Nursi lived in Turkey during a troubleso-

me transition period; he witnessed the

last days of the Ottoman Empire and the

birth of a secular Turkish republic. He

lived in an age when materialism was at

its peak and many crazed after commu-

nism, and the world was in great crisis.

At a time when science and philosophy

were used to mislead young generations

into atheism, and nihilistic attitudes had

a wide appeal, at a time when all this

was done in the name of civilization,

modernization and contemporary thinking

and those who tried to resist them were

subjected to the cruelest of persecutions,

Nursi strove for the overall revival of

a whole people. Even though his non-

violent stance was clear, he was seen as

a potential danger and exiled to different

corners of Anatolia. During the exile, he

started writing his magnum opus “the

Risale-i Nur” (Epistles of Light), by which

he aimed to guide people to the truths

of faith and make them understand the

Qur’an correctly. This book provides a

summary of this hard but fruitful life,

spent in the way of faith.

The Essence of Wisdom

Kemal Turan

Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, was a master of words. The Prophet’s words bore a unique depth of perspective, one that is unequaled in pleasure and distinctly delightful to hear. His words are a source of wis-dom from beyond; his every word moved hearts and astonished minds. The Prophet would sometimes portray a truth by telling a parable. This book is a collection of parables containing the words of the Prophet. Various topics are covered in these narratives of the Prophet along with an explanation of the warnings and lessons to be derived. In the intro-duction, and in each story’s conclusion, additi-onal information was included to present these stories in a complete, comprehensive manner, in order for the moral to be crystallized in the mind of the reader.

Kemal Turan graduated from the Selçuk University School of Theology in Konya. After teaching religious culture and ethics at various elementary and secondary schools, he currently works as the founder and principal of Finike Anatolian High School in Antalya, Turkey.

Abdullah Aymaz is a renowned Islamic scholar and columnist for Zaman daily. He

has authored more than twenty books, including Mary and The Fruits of Worship.

Emphasizing the character of the religion of Is-lam as consisting of faith and practice, this book analyzes thoroughly the five most important “pillars of Islam” that form the core of Islamic life, namely the profession of faith, the prayer, which is the first practical manifestation of faith, fasting, charity, and pilgrimage to Mecca. Explaining lucidly the necessity of fulfilling these “pillars” of Islam with the intention of pleasing God and purely for His sake, the author gives us insights into the moral, spiritual, psychological, physical, individual, and social aspects of these five central practices of Islamic worship in the context of our modern age of globalization.

Doubt and suspicion have existed all along and they will continue to exist. But these days, generating doubts and suspicions about faith is like a contagious disease, and right and wrong seem to have swap-ped roles. Questions and arguments such as, “Who created God? Is punishment by eternal hellfire justifiable when the human lifespan is so short? Does God need our prayers? Why did God create Satan?” now inhabit the homes and lives of every one of us today. In this work, Abdullah Aymaz answers the most commonly asked ques-tions about matters of faith in a succinct and clear way. The author tries to address the intellect, the heart, and the soul of his readers in order to alleviate modern doubts and suspicions.

Abu Bakr The Pinnacle of Truthfulness

ISBN: 9781597842501

5 x 7 ½ inches / 175 pages

$12.95 / paperback

Leading Companions of the Prophet seriesThis book is about Abu Bakr, the first Caliph to rule the world of Islam after the Prophet had passed away. More important than his achievements as a state leader was his close companionship with Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him; in fact, this relati-onship was so close that the Prophet referred to him as “al-Siddiq,” the Truthful one, due to his peerless faithfulness to the Prophet and his mes-sage. Those who had knowledge of the earlier scriptures knew not only about the awaited Prop-het but also his would-be Companion Abu Bakr. He was also the “second of the two” mentioned in the Qur’an (Tawba 9:40), in reference to the great emigration to Medina when Abu Bakr was the only Companion who was privileged to ride alongside the Prophet in this perilous journey, a turning point in the history of humankind.

Understanding IslamThis book seeks to bring to the

attention of young minds

questions concerning our lives in

this world. The beauties of belief

and leading a virtuous life are the

underlying theme of each of the

stories, poems, anecdotes, and

Prophetic traditions narrated in a

way to encourage young believers

to reflect upon the human

condition and the purpose of our

existence.

Muhammad’s (pbuh) sayings and actions which have

centuries-long discipline in which compilations of forty

hadiths have been made into books according to vary-

Emerald Hills

of the HeartKey Concepts in the

Practice of Sufism (4)

Highly contested by orthodox circles and literalists who nar-row religion to formalism on one hand and victimized by practitioners unable to go beyond traditional boundaries on the other, Islamic Sufism continues to be a beacon enlight-ening the path of millions of believers around the world. Gülen’s approach to Sufism in this collection represents the middle way, an approach that in a sense revives the legacy of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, with an awareness of the social realities of the twenty-first century. For Gülen, the marriage of the heart and the mind is necessary for a sensible appreciation of our existence and what we are expected of. He does not confine himself with any typical methodology; he endeavors to reach the water source by opening wells everywhere, for the truth is actually manifested in every single creation and waiting for seekers’ drill.

This fourth volume of the Emerald Hills of the Heart collec-tion concludes a journey—which is textually long, but spiri-tually endless—towards insan al-kamil, the perfect human, as unfolded stage-by-stage with an escalating scale of con-cepts that have developed throughout fourteen centuries on the basis of firm roots established in the time of the Prophet by his own practice. Concepts like Tranquility, Secret, Truth of Divinity, Beyond the Physical Realms, Preserved Tablet, Glorified Attributes, and Beautiful Names are delicately explained in this volume.

M. Fethullah Gülen is a writer, a poet, and a public speaker on issues related to Islam.

Considered as a math novel, Chased by Numbers follows the adventures of five young teenage friends, who must catch their spies before the spies catch them. Along the way, they keep each other entertained by increasingly challenging math riddles. Chased by Numbers is a short, quick read where each chapter presents a clever number trick that any student of math will find to be both interes-ting and educational. An appendix at the back explains the tricks mathematically, offering teachers hands-on classroom activities. We feel this book will be a huge benefit to math students, especially those aged 12–18, and enlightening to general math aficionados.

Praying for health is a significant Islamic custom alongside seeking medical treatment, and has become a vital part of Muslim culture. There are two areas of focus in this book: the methodology and crite-ria of praying for health, and the results of a study on the effect of prayer on Muslim patients’ well-being. This study was conducted at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a Harvard Medical School teaching affiliate in Boston, MA. Twenty-Five Remedies for the Sick, a work by prom-inent contemporary Muslim scholar Said Nursi, included in this book, further enriches the scope of the subject of

Guided by the accounts of such female travelers as Lady Montagu, Julia Pardoe, and Lucy Garnett, all of whom lived in Ottoman lands for significant peri-ods of time, this beautifully illustrated book explores and hopes to overturn the 19th-century stereotypes of Ottoman women. Both Eastern and Western acco-unts of Turkish society during that time made much of the harem, with Orientalist writers describing Turkish women as exo-tic, indolent, and depraved, while some Europeans usually described them as noble and elegant. Then, with the advent of the first women’s movement in the West, the harem began to be criticized as an institution that trapped women and enforced their submission to men. All of these ideas were refuted by Montagu, Pardoe, and Garnett, who argued that Ottoman women were perhaps the freest in the world; this book backs up that claim with historical research showing that women frequently prevailed in cases against their husbands and other male relatives in the Ottoman courts.

B A C K L I S TMecca and Medina are the two sanctuaries of Islam, places which every Muslim dreams of visiting at least once in a lifetime. Mecca is beli-eved to be the very first location of human sett-lement and it was the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him. The Ka’ba, found in Mecca, was raised by the Prophet Abraham from its foundations to become the direction of prayer for believers. Medina is the city in which Islamic civilization was centralized and flourished religiously, politically, and socially. Faruk Aksoy, a BBC cameraman, took hundreds of photographs of these blessed cities from the most spectacular angles. This album includes over 160 select pictures shot by Aksoy since 1980s. He provides for us a picturesque pilgrimage expe-rience and gives us an opportunity to share in the blessings of a lifetime journey as we browse thro-ugh the pages accompanied by inspirational text by Fethullah Gülen. Ömer Faruk Aksoy was born in Istanbul in 1952. He studied German and took photography courses in Switzerland. He was involved in some Turkish movies first as an assistant and then as a cameraman. He star-ted filming documentary videos in Britain in 1980. He then moved to Saudi Arabia, where he directed adverti-sements and films for companies and state institutions, primarily for King Abd al-Aziz University, Umm al-Qura University, the Ministry of Information, the Ministry of the Hajj, and the Administration of the Two Sanctuaries.

How to Live as a Muslim SeriesThe How to Live as a Muslim series is an essential guide for anyone who seeks to acquire an accurate knowledge of Islam. The series elucidates all the facets of Islam with precise brevity in three volumes: An Introduction to Islamic Faith and Thought, Living in the Shade of Islam, and Living the Ethics and Morality of Islam. The first volume of the series delves into the heart of the matter, presenting clearly the fundamentals and different aspects of Islamic faith. Referring to the Islamic faith briefly in the first chapter, the sec-ond volume of the series discusses in detail the other four pillars of Islam: the establishment of the five daily Prayers, the prescribed purifying alms, observing the fast of Ramadan, and the pilgrimage to Makka. In this work, cleanliness, which is equated by God’s Messenger to “half of faith” is also presented in detail with its material, spiritual, and ritual aspects. The third volume explores the ontological nature of humankind; it explains the potential of human selfhood as the noblest of all cre-ation, how men and women may rise along the path of perfectibility towards being truly human, and explains how they may con-versely descend to the lowest of the low, if this potential is abused. It gives practical information on the rights and obligations by which a believer is expected to live and addresses the virtues encouraged in the Qur’an and the Sunna.

Beware! Satan Strategies of Defense

Evolution Science or Ideology?

Mehmet Yavuz Şeker

İrfan Y ı lmaz

Offering a perspective of the world as an arena of assessment and testing, this masterfully illuminating investigation explores the struggle between man and his archenemy, Satan. The book claims that success in life is based on knowing one’s enemies and developing strategies. Discussing the attributes of Satan and his methods of approach, this study references Satan’s most obvious trait—his declaration of war on humankind—and notes that his deception, whispers, trickery, and diabolical plots can only be effective when human beings display weakness. The only traditional prevention is to lead a pious life without leaving any gaps for the attacks of Satan and his aids, but this examination presents another prescription for protection from Satan’s evil—becoming spiritually equipped by attaining inner and outer unity and attaining cohesion between one’s heart and actions.

Mehmet Yavuz Şeker is a Islamic theologian. He frequently speaks and writes on Islam and interfaith dialogue. He lives in Australia.

No one disputes the existence of gravity, air pressure or the expansion of metals; rather, many physical events are explained by these phenomena, which are expressed by formulas, and problems are solved using such formulas. The idea of evolution is neither similar to the laws of physics, nor does it have the character of being experienced by a person’s heart and soul.

Evolution: Science or Ideology aims to show how the theory of evolution has been abused to deny religious thought, and that the scientific evidence set forth to prove it actually serves the opposite. In addition to the English, Turkish and Russian editions are also available.

B A C K L I S TWritten in prose but with a verse-like flavor, Gleams of Truth is a collection of maxims by Bediüzzaman Said Nursi. Very concisely arti-culated, these maxims expound on the key discussions of the Risale-i Nur Collection; thus it is considered in a sense as the index of this collection which was written years later than this volume. It is filled with wise sayings that remove the veils on the mysteries of human life, while offering strong evidence for God’s existence and unity with thought-provoking on-the-target arguments against philosophies of unbelief. Nursi wrote this volume around 1918s when he was a member of the Higher Council of Islam (Darü’l-Hikmet) following his return to Istanbul from captivity in Siberia as the horror of the first great war of the twentieth century was looming across vast lands. The book is a product of an ambitious man who occupied himself with the salvation of humanity both from the hot wars in this world and from the chastisement in the hereafter.

The Rays is one of the key volumes of the Risale-i Nur Collection. In this volume, Bediüzzaman offers his insight on matters of belief with convincing arguments he puts for-ward in essays like The Supreme Sign. For Bediüzzaman, affirmation of faith is much easier than denial, for a single indication is enough for the former whereas an exhaustive investigation of the entire cosmos and throughout all times is necessary for the latter. He affirms that matters concerning what is sacred and spiritual require certainty and advancement in spiritual work; so denial based on evidence from material sphere and restricted only to what our eyes can see is unworthy of consideration. Belief is knowledge and a manifestation of being, and convictions underlying unbelief are ignorance and absence of judgment.

More than two thirds of the entire world is water, and the oceans and rivers are the habitat for thousands of fish and other animals. This book describes amazing abilities of thirteen sea animals in a fun way. Children will discover snail shot arrows, squid turning water inky black, sharks swimming as fast as 45 miles an hour, difficult journey of salmons to the oceans, and anglerfish living in the darkest parts of the oceans. With colorful illustrations, these sea animals speak for themselves and describe their unique abilities.

Who wouldn’t want to fly? Despite our unique status as human beings, we do not possess the ability to lift our feet off the land like birds do. Having inspired us to build airplanes and helicopters, birds and other flying animals like bees, dragonflies, and mosquitoes have many other skills, too. With illustrations, this book presents geese helping each other in the sky, the secretary bird hunting snakes, woodpeckers digging nests in trees, the albatross with a huge wingspan, and the honeyguide cooperating with the badger to feed on the wax of hives.
