CITY HISTORY MUSEUMMEMORABLE-VIEW PERCEPTION

Instructor: Ahenk Yılmaz, Nur YavuzYear: Fall, 2012Site: Konak, Izmir

The conceptual idea is creating more memorable, impres-sive, effective spaces in order to create effect like ‘Bilbao Effect’. Bilbao effect is the changing of the city perception after the Guggeinheim Museum by Frank Gehry in Bilbao. Therefore, spaces are well-remembered and drawn eas-ily by the observers as an experince output and additionally allowing the people to think and remember. The levels and layers of the inside and outside of the building is the main parameter to create the spatial relation. The building functions as a city history museum for finding the ruins of memory with artistic tools from the history of the city. Mainly, it includes a time tunnel which the whole exhibition and workshop spaces are placed in. For the future of fair area, there are slopes (like waves) ,which have view references around the fair, represents unclear layers of history of the city, in the building, the layers of the history are more pre-cise. The urban aim is creating integration between build-ing and the fair for most preferred place, the museum, inside the city and most activity locations, the fair, without borders.

The design for the retreat is based on the environment of the town of the Birgi. The building is designed as a part of Birgi. It was shaped according to the view and the relation of inside and outside. In order to be a part of Birgi , exact borders are not demanded to seperate buildig from its environment. In terms of out-side and inside borders, a transition between them are tried to be created. Although, you are inside of the building, you can feel that you are outside with the amazing view of the town. You can catch the view from different places almost inside vantage point. Ac-tually this point of the view is conditioned by motion and circulation. Catching the view with your motion, the view is framed suddenly and the sight amazes you.

The aim is to examine the working princi-ples of different structural systems. These systems are wall, frame, and pilate systems. Each structural systems were adapted to the same design. While the process of three lev-els, there were some changes due to the dif-ferent features of these structure systems. In other words, the structure changes the design of the building. To express those dif-ferent features, different presentation formats and techniques were used. There were mod-els of the building and drawings of analysis.
