M A J O R I N D E P E N D E N T R E S E A R C H I N T E R E S T S I am involved in translational and epidemiologic research into rheumatic diseases, especially osteoarthritis (OA) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and in the development of Internet-based research study methodologies. A. Osteoarthritis: My research career began with a community-based study of knee OA that generated a number of influential manuscripts concerning its patterns, relationship to physical function and risk factors. At that time I published the first study to OA using MRI. Pursuit of this line of research led me to Boston University in 1993, where I examined effects of a variety of exposures on OA risk including nutrition status and physical activity. In 2002 my focus changed towards translation of the epidemiologic findings into clinical trials. Subsequently, I was performed clinical trials testing the effects of various potential disease-modifying agents for knee OA (vitamin D, collagen hydrolysate and BMP-7); and, more recently, intra-articular corticosteroids. Involvement in the Osteoarthritis Initiative also led me to investigate the participation of bone in the progression of OA in a large ancillary study. B. SLE: I have performed a number of studies investigating clinical and epidemiologic aspects of SLE.

C. Internet-based research study methodologies I originally obtained funding from NIH/NLM to develop a methodology for online clinical trials by conducting a prototype trial of Glucosamine for knee OA symptoms. This endeavor stimulated a program of activities focused on testing online research approaches, including case-control studies and case-crossover studies. The online trial idea won an award from the Boston University Office of Technology Transfer and was recently granted a patent.

A Method for Patient-Centered Enrollment in Comparative Effectiveness Trials:

Mathematical Equipoise The goal of this project is to develop a mathematical equipoise (ME) method to address important clinical problems for which randomized clinical trials (RCTs) have not been done – especially when ultimately widely incorporated into EHRs – should greatly enhance the number, scope, and impact of patient-centered comparative effectiveness trials. This project will develop an ME method for knee osteoarthritis treatment. Project Role: Co-Investigator
