1 Boston PILOT Assessment Summary Tufts University Calendar Year 2016 This report responds to the City of Boston’s inquiry about services provided to residents by tax exempt institutions. Process Summary Community Relations collected data on activities, programs, volunteer efforts, and services that Tufts students, faculty, and staff have provided to benefit the City of Boston and/or its residents. We solicited information from each of our schools. The data outlined on the following pages represents the results collected.     Wilkie Cook City Studio City Studio is a studio based after-school art program established through a partnership between Boston Public Schools and SMFA at Tufts University that acts as a bridge towards higher art education. This program places a dual focus on both a rigorous conceptual development of a high school student’s art practice and the practical steps towards college enrollment in the art field.

    Nancy Bauer Massachusetts Art Competition We are working closely with The Boston Globe to run the statewide Scholastic Art and Writing Awards for Massachusetts students in grades 7 through 12. The artistic work is being judged at the SMFA this January, and we arranged with the Museum of Fine Arts to hold the award ceremony at the MFA on March 11, 2017.

    All MA art & writing students, gr 7-12, who choose to participate.

    Wealth Inequality Workshops: In both the spring of 2016, a Scholar worked with United for a Fair Economy, a national non-profit based in Boston that supports movements against wealth inequality. She did research and developed workshops in the popular economic education department, adding information and activities surrounding how wealth inequality intersects with gender and race. She worked to implement those workshops in organizations.

    Youth Mentorship: In both the spring of 2016, one Scholar worked with Strong Women Strong Girls (SWSG), an organization that trains college-aged women to teach workshops to local elementary school girls about female empowerment. She is creating a Junior Mentor Program (JUMP) for SWSG that will invite SWSG middle-school alumnae from a few Boston sites to return as junior mentors and assist in facilitating weekly workshops. She is also designing and leading a curriculum for monthly junior mentor team-building sessions that are designed to support the junior mentors as they take on a leadership position, as well as to create a community to discuss their experiences as girls in middle school. The program is designed with the dual purpose of empowering girls who have

    A Tisch Scholar interned at Alternatives for Community and Environment (ACE) in the fall of 2016. Based in Roxbury, ACE empowers communities of color and low-income communities in Massachusetts to eradicate environmental racism and classism; create healthy, sustainable communities; and achieve environmental justice. Additionally, she supported one of their Youth Organizers through her college application process and created a manual and workshop on the current college application process in order to build capacity within ACE to provide this service to more Youth Organizers in the future.

    updated internal operations manual and external documents for homeowners will provide access to clear, accurate information regarding policies and processes for refinancing, home repair, and re-sales. Along with the DNI team, the Scholars also simultaneously worked to organize a resource fair for homeowners, where they shared the documents produced to incorporate community feedback.

    In spring of 2016, a Scholar worked with Haley House in Boston’s South End. Haley House is dedicated to combating homelessness by providing fresh meals, housing, clothing, promoting economic independence, and organizing art workshops while challenging the structural inequalities that perpetuate poverty and discrimination. The student worked in the soup kitchen helping to prepare healthy meals and built relationships with the guests as well as in the administrative office helping with tasks that include grant writing and prospecting, program evaluation and monitoring.

The Scholar worked closely with the next door Codman Square Community Health Center to further the partnership between primary care and access to healthy, fresh, and affordable foods.

    students in higher education. The project supports 2nd-4th graders in several schools across the Greater Boston area during 8-12 week long after school math enrichment sessions. As a College Math Literacy Worker, the Scholar oversees the Math Literacy Workers as well as works with elementary students in the classroom.

    In the spring and fall of 2016, a Scholar to support Mission Hill K-8 School’s process of designing Mission Hill Art Science High School based on community needs and ideas. The Scholar learned about what it takes to build a truly democratic schooling environment that fully respects everyone’s voices, identities and humanity. The Scholar’s specific role involves listening generously, engaging voices, and honestly documenting and sharing the process of designing this high school, which brings together community members across disciplines, generations, institutions, races and backgrounds.

    In the spring and fall of 2016, a Scholar worked for MassVOTE, a statewide nonprofit that works to register, educate, and mobilize voters, with a focus on historically underrepresented communities in Massachusetts. While at MassVOTE, the Scholar registered and educated voters on a nonpartisan basis, working with Boston schools to help promote civic education and early voting, and fighting for election reform. The Scholar also worked on a program that seeks to identify consistent and engaged voters from minority communities, and work with them to help increase voting in their neighborhoods.

    In the spring and fall of 2016, a Scholar worked with St. Stephens Youth Program in Boston’s South End- a youth program that serves local kids in the area during the summer and throughout the school year. The Scholar (a South End resident and alumna of the St. Stephen’s program) created a mentorship program between Tufts students and the teens that SSYP employs (high school students who are predominantly of color and low income).

    In the spring of 2016, a Scholar worked at the Massachusetts Health Policy Commission (HPC) as the Market Performance Intern. The HPC’s role is to improve the implementation and quality of health care across the Commonwealth, while driving down costs through increased transparency and innovation. The Market Performance team focuses on conducting cost and market impact reviews (CMIR) of market transactions, including hospital mergers and acquisitions. The Scholar assisted with building a comprehensive database for the HPC, and compiling data for payers and providers that exceeded the cost growth benchmark. The Scholar researched and analyzed the causes for the increase in costs and help developed Performance Improvement Plans for each organization.

Lessons include nutrition and science topics, such as plant parts, pollination, and the food web, which include song, art, and rooftop garden planting.

    Josiah Quincy Elementary School- 125 3rd grade students during 2016-2017 school year.

    ~12 program volunteers and 2 paid program coordinators (~$1,200-$1,500)for entire school year Supply costs are ~$250 annually. An outside foundation pays for 2 students to coordinate the logistics of the program and curriculum development.
