Backpack

It is important that your backpack have a frame, either internal or external. It must have a waist belt and be large enough to carry all personal and group equipment; this means a pack with an internal volume of 55 liters or more. It must fit properly.

Sleeping Bag

Bring a bag that is rated to about 20-30ºF. A synthetic, polyester fill (i.e.; Polarguard, Quallofil, Hollofil, etc.) bags is required; down bags will NOT keep you warm if they get wet!

Sleeping Bag Stuff Sack

You can line the inside with a non-scented garbage bag to make them extra waterproof, and keep your bag dry if your pack gets wet.

Sleeping Pad

This is not about being comfortable, this is about insulating your body heat instead of losing it to the ground! These are important. Also, check and see if your pack has straps or if you need straps to attach it to your pack.

Cotton will not keep you warm when it gets wet!

Wool Sweater or Fleece Jacket

Cotton loses its heat when it gets wet! Wool, Fleece, and Synthetic keep you warm even if they get wet!

Wool or Fleece Pants

Fleece pajama pants can be a great, affordable option (just make sure they are synthetic)!


Long Underwear Top and Bottom

Hiking Boots


It is very important that you break in your boots before your trip to avoid painful blisters! Walk around in them! If possible, try to walk longer distances (3-5 miles) with some weight in a backpack.

Camp Shoes (or “wet shoes” for canoe trips)

Something comfortable that you are okay with getting wet and dirty

Water Bottles


We prefer water bottles to Camelbaks, so if you choose to bring a Camelbak please also bring a 32oz. water bottle. Please do not bring a Camelbak if you have never used one before, because you will inevitably spill it all over your

stuff and have wet stuff! Also, please make sure water bottles are 32oz.
