Week commencing 22.06.2020 Monday Reading: 15 minutes per day – See PAWSOME Gang questions on the website. Phonics/Spellings: Over the next few weeks we’ll be focussing on the Year 2 common exception words. Use the power point to recap some of these words. Children may like to come up with mnemonics or rhymes to help them remember spelling patterns. English: Make Inferences. Use the PPT to introduce a book called ‘Flotsam’ – a book with no text. Ask your child to say what they think the book might be about. The children will use their inference skills to infer whom flotsam items might belong to. They will then look at the first few pages of this book and their task is to infer what the character in the story might be like. Maths: Describe turns clockwise and anticlockwise. Use the PowerPoint to recap fractions and introduce new language. There is a short BBC clip to watch on giving directions. Task: Use the sheet on the class page, cut and stick the pictures following the instructions given on how to turn them. Tuesday Reading: 15 minutes per day Phonics/Spellings: Practice writing out this week’s spellings, on the class page there is a handwriting sheet for children to practice both their spellings and handwriting. English: Make inferences from pictures – Using the link on the PPT the class will watch the video up to 2.02 minutes. In the book the boy finds some very strange under water world pictures. The children need to look closely at these to see what’s happening in each one. Task: Choose one image to focus on and complete the Inference and Wonder sheet on the class page. Maths: Describe turns clockwise and anticlockwise. Continuing from yesterday, use the PPT to develop children’s understanding. Notice how some turns can result in the same outcome e.g. half turn clockwise, half turn anticlockwise. Task: This is a bit of an investigation lesson. Look at the pictures on the sheet, can they find more than one way to describe the turn? e.g. the shape could have moved a quarter turn clockwise but a 3 quarter turn anticlockwise could also have the same result. It may help to cut out the shapes and physically turn them. Wednesday Reading: 15 minutes per day Phonics/Spellings: Dictated sentences: Read aloud the following sentences and ask your child to write them down. Remind them to include capital letters and full stops. It can be cold on Christmas. You should try to be kind to everybody. You would be lucky to find a gold watch. (should, would, and Christmas are also common exception words) English: Describe in Detail. Use the PPT to recap adjectives. Look back over the strange pictures from yesterday. Today I would like the class to create their own underwater world. If they’re feeling creative they could draw, paint or create one. Then I would like the class to use rich language to describe their underwater worlds – this could be completed orally or written. Maths: Describe movement and turns (I’ll admit that this lesson usually confuses me and I still have to use my hands to remember which direction is left and right so planning this over PPT was fun…) Please do not worry if this is a step too far, there are some Mathletics activities which could be completed instead – see last slide of PPT). For those who are confident to continue, today you will be giving directions including

Thursday   Reading: 15 minutes per day – 60 second read Phonics/Spellings: Spelling frame –https://spellingframe.co.uk/spelling-rule/108/31-Common-exception-words https://spellingframe.co.uk/spelling-rule/107/30-Common-exception-words  Choose a game to practice the common exception words or complete the word search. English: Plan a story: Use the PPT to recap adverbs. Then watch the video showing the book of Flotsam. The book has no text, so it’s really up to the children to infer what’s happening in the story. Task: Children to write text to go along side the book (this could be carried over to tomorrow’s work as well depending on levels of motivation!). Maths: A more chilled end to the week - today I would like children to complete an under the sea themed crack the code focussing on addition and subtraction. If they wish they may like to create their own code for someone else to crack.

Friday     Reading: 15 minutes per day Phonics/Spellings: Test your child on the spellings. English: Either continue with writing a narrative for the story Flotsam, or if you have finished this (check you out!!) and would like another task there is a differentiated reading comprehension on the class page, choose an appropriate level for your child ☺ Maths: Focussing on addition to 100, children are to complete a pirate themed mosaic. (I have uploaded an addition and subtraction to 20 on the class page). Choose one of the pictures to complete.

Sports day It’s that time of year that we should be out on the Grayswood green enjoying sports day. Since the weather looks amazing this week, I have put together a Robins sports day sheet on the class page for those that would like to hold their own stay at home sports day. These are just some ideas so feel free to adapt. There is also a certificate if you would like to hold a celebration ceremony!

 History: Who was Christopher Columbus?

The class have already briefly looked at Christopher Columbus in Year 1, but they can refresh their knowledge with the link above. There is a taste test sheet on the class page.

Alternatively, they could research James Cook, I’ve put a PPT on the class page to get you started.

Hour of Code:

This goes hand in hand with describing movement in maths and is another opportunity to consolidate this.

Science: Flotsam items are often washed up on the shore but unfortunately so is a lot of plastic waste. Use the PPT to understand plastic pollution and how you can help. As a task children could look at finding another use for something that would otherwise be thrown away or create a poster to teach others about plastic pollution.

Family Picture In the story Flotsam, the boy finds pictures of all the people who have found the camera prior to him. If you look closely there are lots of photos within a photo. You could have a go at creating a family photo like this!

Art: This is a work of art by and artist called Hokusai. It is called The Great Wave off Kanagawa. The artist used a technique called woodblock printing. Block printing generally involves carving an image onto a large block, covering that design in ink, and stamping it onto card, paper or fabric. Create your own wave picture using a technique of your choice e.g. collage, pointillism, printing, water colour.
