TUESDAY TALK SERIESon Tuesday, 8th

May, 2012 at its campus. The continuous

faculty interaction programme was an

iniative by the faculties to present their

papers, research paper or any other

similar activity to JIMS fraternity. The

resource persons for the presentations

were Ms Suman Madan (Associate

Professor), Ms Kanika Behl (Associate

Professor), Ms Shradhha Kumar

(Associate Professor) & Ms. Ankita

Sharma (Assistant Professor). The

audiences at session included Director

Dr.J.K Goyal, Dean Dr. Madan Mohan

Maheshwari, Dean (Retail & Marketing)

Dr Sumesh Raizada, Mr Cherian George

(Associate Professor) and other staff

members.

Our presenters Ms Suman Madan &Kanika Behl had already presented the

paper at the University School of

Management. The first paper was a

contribution effort by Ms.Suman Madanand Ms.Kanika Behl on the topic of

Cloud Computing- Database as a

service. Hence, both were there to

present the paper. Ms Suman Madangave a brief introduction on cloud

computing. The topic was explained

through various examples such as IBM,

Google, Microsoft and Amazon web

services. She also explained the cloud

service model where she talked about

Saas (Cloud software as a service), Paas

(Cloud platform as a service), & Laas

(Cloud infrastructure as a service).She

then explained the general

characteristics of cloud computing such

as private and public cloud,

virtualization, reliability, scalability and

security.

The second paper was presented by Ms

Kanika Behl- where she gave an insightinto the different database providers

such as Microsoft SQL Azure, Amazon

RDS, Google Big Table and Yahoo PNUTS.

This talk was also carried forward by an

open discussion on various applications

and examples in real world. She also

explained the database architecture by

showing different layers in the DBaas

environment such as HW layer, VM layer,

DB server layer and instance layer.

Finally, she concluded with their research

focus and some open questions that

could help to expand the research into

management level.

Our third presenter Ms Shraddha Kumar

had presented the paper on Sift objectretrieval from Videos at BVIMR, New

Delhi. The paper started with an

introduction about Image processing as

it was a familiar and related to it. Since

the audiences were from various

departments, the discussion was made in

a more simple way to focus on the

diverse audience. The paper written was

an application based where SIFT (Scale

invariant feature transform) was used

and designed using Matlab.

Further, the discussion continued byputting more emphasis on examples

such as punching machine. This paper

was described by showing the 4 steps of

algorithm such as

1. Scale Space extreme detection,

2.Keypoint localization and filtration,

3.Orientation assignment

4.Descriptor construction.

She also showed the flowchart and her

results. The results also made a good

open discussion for the audience on the

samples used, precision value and recallvalue.

Overall the session was well appreciated

by the audience and was learning and a

fruitful experience for the staff & other

faculty members. Also, it was a great

opportunity given by the participants for

sharing the opportunity to talk on their

research.
