The exponent of a number says how many times to use the number in a multiplication.

    Exponents

We also use index or power

102 This tells you how many times

the number is multiplied by itself..

    This is 10 squared which is 10 x 10 which is 100

    Just think.

If you are going to do a ‘x’ / multiplication – is your answer going to get bigger or smaller?

    BIGGER!

    So if you are doing 4.5 x 10 –

Your answer cannot be 0.45 or 0.045 or 0.4

    Because…

    They are all SMALLER!

    0

    0

    8

Next look at the number of zeros ( 0 )

If there is 2 0’s, your number is going to get 2 place values bigger or smaller.

If there is 6 0’s, your number is going to get 6 place values bigger or smaller.

Can you do 0.08 x 10 following these rules?

    0

    8

Can you do 0.8 x 1000 following these rules?

    Try these on your whiteboard!

    4 x 100

    0.4 x 100

    0.4 ÷ 10

    900 ÷ 1000
