Don’s International Director’s Report 07/05/2019
• Recently ROMAC made contact about two children our teams found 3 years ago. Through a number of
unfortunate situations, they had fallen off the radar but now were back in view and ROMAC were needing
help to get their cases activated again.
• Naylyn Pelam was a 2 year old when we found her on the island of Santo and had a severe debilitating
scoliosis (twisted spine). Her file had been lost in one of our hospitals that had been asked to assist in
providing her treatment. Over the years the family had been sending me periodic enquiries about her
case and I had been forwarding these to ROMAC without response. Last week an apologetic email
arrived saying a surgeon, Dr Angus Gray at the Sydney Children’s Hospital, had agreed to take her
case on and was negotiating for a hospital placement for her. Over the next few months we will be
involved in getting her through the passport, medical visas and other associated paper warfare
involved before treatment can begin.
• Leela Tu comes from the ultra-remote island of Merelava. She has an encephalocele (a severe facial
bone deformity) and is totally blind. I understand her case was somehow brought to the fore as a result
of Naylyn’s being reactivated. ROMAC intend sending her to NZ for her surgery but needed help to
find her again. Our Ni-Vanuatu staff have been able to do this and will further assist in enabling
ROMAC to help this very needy child.
• Two loads of goods for shipping to Vanuatu were taken to DIK Geelong last week and our next shipping
container is due to be delivered to DIK Geelong this week. If packing goes to plan this container will sail on
June 2nd and be in Vanuatu by June 17th. A considerable number if items packed ready for shipping remain in
storage in Stratford, Valencia Creek, Rosanna, and North Ringwood so further trips will be necessary in the
next few weeks.
• Drs Graeme Duke and Jamie Hendrie went to Geelong with us on Tuesday last to sort medical goods for DIK
and this was a massive job. These two doctors will be also the leaders of two specialist training teams who
will be working at the Vila Central Hospital in July. Dr Duke will lead a team training nurses and doctors on
modern intensive care techniques and Dr Hendrie’s team will run a similar program on emergency medicine.
To assist them in this work some sophisticated and expensive medical manikins have been donated by Box
Hill and the Austin hospitals. These are now in Geelong awaiting shipment.
• The May wages bill for our 8 Ni-Vanuatu eye care and dental workers was paid last week and donations to
cover this monthly expense continue to come in.
• Through the support of John Cronin (Maffra Optometrist) 2 old style mechanical edging machines for cutting
optical lenses have been offered to the Vanuatu project. Unfortunately, they are situated in Sydney, but
arrangements are being made to get them to Maffra. In addition, a person with the required expertise to service
them and get them to top working condition has agreed to do whatever is required free of charge to make them
run perfectly. These machines are of an older technology that is better suited to cutting second-hand lenses
than the modern computerised versions and Anderson’s removals from Maffra have agreed to do the
transporting for us.
• Friendship Grants from DFAT – another round of these has been notified and we have received an invitation
to send a representative to the briefing that will be held on May 23 in Melbourne. I intend to be there. A
requirement of these applications is a proper audit and I have had an offer from a chartered accountant in
Bairnsdale to do this free of charge.
• A $2000 donation from the UCA Stamp fund has been received and I have been asked to attend a Longford
Lions dinner on Friday to address them about the Vanuatu Project and to receive a donation from them.
“Getting to Know You” series continued:

Guest Speaker:
Chairman Sandra with guest speaker Heather Toms.
Chairman Sandra introduced Rev. Heather Toms, current Anglican Chaplain at Fulham Prison.
Ordained in 2009, Heather was secretary to 3 Bishops before then. She has an administrative background, was born in
Melbourne and has lived in Yallourn and Sale. She has 3 sons, 8 grandsons and 3 step grandsons.
Heather presented a moving and passionate account of her work and is involved with the “Get Out for Good” program.
She expressed her need to speak mainly in generic terms to maintain the trust and confidentiality of prisoners who she
speaks to daily.
Heather made it clear that she does not support bad behaviour but tries to be non-judgemental. She finds
discrimination abhorrent. Pastoral care of the disenfranchised is her goal.
Heather finds the role personally costly. Endless patience and understanding, constant listening and caring is required
and can be very tiring and demanding.
Heather defines pastoral care as listening and standing by. There is a constant need to look directly and listen intently.
President Raj thanked Heather with a small memento of her time with us.
