of blitzkrieg.• WWII turning point: D-Day/The Invasion of

Normandy (June 6, 1944).• The allied powers surround Berlin, Germany

loses the war.

While Hitler was rising to power, Japan was:• a small country (archipelago) needing to import

natural resources.• the 1st Asian country to industrialize.• planning to expand to an Empire:– 1931 – Japanese soldiers take over Manchuria, China– 1937 – Full scale war between China vs. Japan

• Hundreds of thousands of Chinese civilians (men, women, elderly, and children) and disarmed soldiers are murdered.

– 1930s - U.S. viewed Japanese invasion of China as aggression.– U.S. placed an embargo on exports to Japan (oil, gasoline,

scrap iron, and steel)• Either Japan has to withdraw from China or deal with the U.S.

• Japan responds: Attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 “A day that will live in infamy”

• December 8, 1941, U.S. gets into the war… not because of Germany, but because of Japan.
