Regarding this pro-posed new, New Zea-land Flag business.

From a dictionary ... FLAG; A cloth bearing emblems or fi gures to distinguish one nationality from another, and expres-sive of nationality.

I have looked at the reproductions of some of the suggestions in the Courier and New Zealand Herald.

All would look great fl uttering over a used car yard or fast food outlet.

I think that the New Zealand Flag should be left as it is, but perhaps with a Kiwi emblem added below the Union Jack.

The Silver Fern is well known in sport-ing circles but practi-cally unknown where our peacekeeping forces are stationed around the world.

The Kiwi emblem is painted on our warships, aeroplanes and land transport operated by the armed services and our peacekeepers, and instantly recognised as New Zealand, and New Zealanders.

Australians and Anzacs are a unique people.

You name it. We ex-cel at it.

We do not have to change to conform just for change’s sake.

Perhaps let us add our Kiwi to the fl ag

and our cuzzies over the ditch may like to add their ‘roo to their fl ag to distinguish be-tween Trans Tasman neighbours, but leave

the basic fl ag as it is.I proudly fl y our

New Zealand Flag from my home most days.

Harleys hog highway

The 15th National HOG (Harley Owners Group) Rally was hosted by the Waikato chapter on Saturday. This saw over 1000 Harleys heading through Pirongia and Te Awamutu on their way to Cambridge about 11am. They made an impressive sight streaming down Alexandra Street and were greeted warmly. The rally raised $1800 which will be used to buy books for Kawhia Primary School 04605A,BD

Rural areas are also subject to summer re-strictions and a permit is required.

Deputy Principal Ru-ral Fire Offi cer Chuck Davis said it was nor-mal for a restricted sea-son in the rural area to run from November to March each year, but the current situation was more unusual.

“Even a couple of wet humid days are likely to make little differ-ence in the short term. While issuing permits has been suspended, this is constantly re-viewed, sustained rain-fall that reduces the risk level will allow us to review issuing per-mits,” Mr Davis says.

Specialist forest fi re fi ghting equipment supplied by Council was required to fi ght a major rural blaze last week covering over a hectare of land.

If in doubt as to what restrictions apply peo-ple are encouraged to contact Waipa District Council.

Thursday, 7.48am. Private fi re alarm, Bank Street. 5.01pm. Grass fi re, Greenhill Drive.

RDA ready for more riders, volunteers

TE AWAMUTU RDA volunteers (from left) Malcolm McBeth (riding Sunny and leading Chester), Shontelle Cameron (leading Joe), Emma Dobbs (riding Beauty), Jenny Strang (riding Navajo) and Anne Johnston (riding Honey) prepare for the first session of 2005. 046055AD

More volunteers and more rid-ers are welcomed by Te Awamutu Group for Riding For the Disa-bled (RDA).

The group is one of 53 through-out New Zealand and operates in the rodeo arena at Kihikihi Domain every Tuesday.

RDA, or Riding For a Purpose as they prefer to be known, ca-ters for people with disabilities through therapeutic horse riding.

The group also caters for social behavioural, emotional and edu-

cational needs.Riders who come to RDA for

educational reasons are usu-ally accompanied by their teacher aids and can begin a process of learning good habits that will follow the student back into the classroom.

The group uses six horses, and is always on the lookout for that ‘special’ horse.

At present the group would like another pony around 13h.

Volunteers work as leaders

and side walkers, up to three per horse and rider depending on the circumstances.

They also enjoy helping oth-ers, having fun and making new friends through RDA.

Training is given to the volun-teers and NZQA units in coaching and equine are available to those wishing to gain further qualifi ca-tions and experience.

Anyone wanting more informa-tion on RDA can contact Carol (871 6035).

Dream trip comes true

Catherine Peake’s dream of fi shing with her family and pulling in a giant snapper all but came true recently.

As inaugural winner of the ‘Fish the Primetime Dream’, Catherine, her father Geoff and siblings Tony and Gabrielle enjoyed a four day charter on Primetime, accompanied by New Zealand Fishing News editor Grant Dixon.

The family is keen on fi shing, both in the sea and freshwater, but had never experienced anything like this.

They described the experience as mindblowing.

From catching livebaits to pulling in a trophy snapper and chasing marlin, the family had a ball.

The fi rst serious fi sh was in 230 me-tres of water and soon both Catherine and Tony had their fi rst catches, Tony a bluenose weighing over 30kg and Catherine a double-header of gemfi sh.

Catherine went on to pull up her fi rst ever hapuka, which weighed 12kg, and Geoff pulled up the biggest fi sh of the trip, another bluenose max-ing out the 30kg scales.

The next day the fi shing was as good, with Tony loading up a test rod and reel with an 11.5kg trophy snap-per.

Geoff had the fi sh smoked back in Te Awamutu and says it looked a treat on the large platter he had to borrow for the occasion.

Both girls also reeled in, tagged and released almost twin 15kg kingfi sh.

The team also tried very hard to land a billfi sh, and despite a few strikes, didn’t quite manage this fi nal task, but not through lack of effort on everyone’s part. The full story of ‘Fish the Primetime Dream’ features in this month’s edition of New Zealand Fishing News.

Te Awamutu Rotary Club recently hosted its fi rst Group Friendship Exchange tour con-tingent.

The group of 14 Rotarians and partners from England was collected from Auckland in mini buses and distributed to Rotary hosts in Te Awamutu area on

Monday, January 31.Highlights of their four day

stay here included a dinner at Pirongia Forest Park Lodge and visits to Kihikihi Rotary Club’s weekly meeting, Waitomo Caves and Maungatautari Ecological Island Trust reserve.

Spokesman for Te Awamutu

Rotary Club, Sid Lim says the visit was thoroughly enjoyed by the tourists and their hosts.

Local Rotarians have been in-vited to undertake a reciprocal GFE visit to England next year.See also Rotary Centenary Celebrations feature on pages 14-15.

New Zealand Post is com-memorating the selfl ess works of three major community-based organisations - Lions, Rotary and the YMCA.

The groups who celebrate their 50th, 100th and 150th re-spective birthdays this year now have their own stamps marking their celebrated history.

Through the issue, New Zea-land Post pays tribute to the thousands of New Zealanders who, as members and support-ers of these vital community groups, care for those around them.

New Zealand Post’s Ivor Mas-ters says the organisations cele-brating this momentous time in their history have contributed signifi cantly to the very fabric of

New Zealand communities.“These organisations have

helped hundreds of thousands of people throughout New Zealand and many more worldwide.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to sit back and consider the im-pact they have had on our past, and will undoubtedly have on our future.”

The organisations themselves

are pleased the stamps will be a part of their birthday celebra-tions and will lead to a greater focus on their role in society. The Te Awamutu Courier is pleased to present features on both Rotary and Lions this week. The Rotary feature is in today’s issue (pages 14-15), while the Lions feature will be published on Thursday.

Next Thursday night’s Te Awamutu Concert by the Central Band of the RNZAF will be a comecoming for member Hayden Hockly.

The former Te Awamutu College student joined the band last year and is a versatile member of the saxophone section.

He was a member and soloist of Senior Band, Jazz Band and Flying Start at Te Awamutu College, during his fi ve years as a second-ary school student.

Following his high school years, Mr Hockley moved to Wellington to study at Mas-sey University and will this year complete his Bachelor of Music in performance saxophone.

He has also been a member of Saxcess since December, and is the most recent addition the group playing tenor. Saxcess is a saxophone ensemble which has taken the saxophone to all corners of New Zealand for over ten years now.

He is also a member of the Victoria School of Mu-sic Big Band and also the tenor saxophonist of The Duvel Saxophone Quartet, of which he has been a member of since its forma-tion in 2002.

In keeping with his as-pirations to obtain a high level of artistry on the saxo-phone, Mr Hockley intends to undertake study overseas (most likely Europe) and hopes, through performing and teaching music, to pass on to others his love and enthusiasm for life.

Tickets for the Te Awamutu concert are avail-able from the Te Awamutu Visitor Information Centre.

The Rotary Club of Te Awamutu this year celebrates two landmark birthdays.

In association with more than 1.5 million Rotarians worldwide - in New Zealand Rotarians will celebrate with pride the founding of Rotary 100 years ago.

In that year Paul Harris and friends initiated, in Chicago, the fi rst service club in the world.

The Rotary Club of Te Awamutu was established in 1945, thus the International Centenary is shared in conjunction with the 60th Anniversary of the club.

All Rotarians refl ect with pride on a host of services initiated and provided worldwide to local, national and inter-national communities.

Rotary’s objective and motto re-mains ‘Service Above Self’, while Rotarians’ mission continues to be - ‘To achieve world understanding and peace through international hu-manitarian, educational and cultural programmes’.

The Diamond Jubilee celebrates the arrival of Rotary in this community as a club sponsored by the Rotary Club of Hamilton at a meeting of 27 Te Awamutu citizens on June 20, 1945.

Prominent businessman, A.J. Sin-clair was elected fi rst President and membership soon exceeded 100 men of the town and district.

Club secretary Ted Turton, who joined in 1968, has served in that offi ce 25 years continuously since 1980 and past president Peter Winter, who joined in 1958, remains an active member.

A group of senior club members is currently developing a celebratory oc-casion for the Jubilee year.

The club will recognise the Cen-tenary with an annual scholarship, valued at $2,000, in association with the University of Waikato.

The scholarship will supplement the winner’s university fees. Applicants must have had a close association with Te Awamutu District.

A decade of declining member-ship, common to all service clubs and community groups, is being arrested and Rotary is now pleased to realise gains, especially in recruiting women members. This in an organisation that didn’t admit women until 1989.

In 2005 two of the six Rotary Dis-trict Governors in New Zealand - for

Auckland and Taranaki - are women, as is the Immediate Past District Gov-ernor for this district.

Rotary once had a reputation as a ‘diffi cult-to-join elitist organisation’. No longer is this so.

In New Zealand this change is de-fi ned by the campaign - ‘Rotary - peo-ple like you and me’, a promotion that is attracting fresh interest in Rotary locally. Rotary has been increasing the public profi le of the work it does in the community.

“We’ve been too modest in the past,” says president Sid Lim of the Rotary Club of Te Awamutu.

“The reality is, we want people to join Rotary, and they need to know what it stands for and what it achieves. That’s a pragmatic, commonsense approach. We need more people to fi ll the gaps left by reduced community services, aging membership and the departure of traditional funders.

“People are amazed when you tell them that Rotary in New Zealand was involved in setting up the Sir Roy Mc-Kenzie Outward Bound Scholarships, Meals on Wheels, CCS, Defensive Driving, Milk in Schools, the Star-ship Ronald McDonald House, Spinal Cord Cure Appeal. With many other

initiatives including the J.R. McKenzie Trust and Youth Education plan,” Mr Lim says.

“With youth programmes such as Rotary Youth Leadership Awards - more than 60 teenagers have par-ticipated in the past four decades - the Matched Twin Student Exchange with Australia, as well as the International Student Exchange, Group Study Ex-changes, in addition to local recogni-tion of meritorious community service, we’ve much to be proud of.”

Other international programmes include the Polio Plus (Elimination) Programme, Child Health Foundation, Asian Tsunami Relief, International Relief Programme and Emergency Housing in the South Pacifi c to name a few.

On the home front, Te Awamutu Rotary has an enviable history of community enhancing projects, in which members provide personal skills and collective talents to develop and progress the wellbeing and qual-ity of our society.

A recent initiative was the establish-ment - with Kihikihi Rotary Club - of the very popular Rosetown Probus Club, now actively operating in its third year.

The annual Kawhia 4WD Safari is held each autumn with great goodwill from west coast land owners.

Based this year in Marakopa, the event regularly attracts more than 80 vehicles plus drivers and associates.

Supportive programmes for youth, in national and international contexts, offer many participants a life changing experience.

Rotary history in Te Awamutu records the halcyon 1970’s years when membership exceeded one hundred and the club sponsored the establishment of the Rotary Club of Kihikihi in June 1975.

Rotary in our community deserves to continue its iconic record of service. This can happen only with a regular infusion of active members.

Kihikihi Rotary president Cobber Weinberg and Te Awamutu president Sid Lim say they believe a strong so-cietal interest in ‘service’ only requires the stimulus of example, together with the invitation and encouragement to join.

“If we haven’t yet talked to you - please talk to one of us. You will be very welcome.”

The Rotary Club of Kihikihi is cel-ebrating 30 years since it was chartered in 1975.

Eric Laird, who was a past president of Te Awamutu Rotary, was the charter president.

There are four (out of 25) charter members still active in the club - Rex Bedford, Hugh Donaldson, Murray Higham and Trevor Morrison.

Over the past three decades the club has assisted in many projects in both the Kihikihi and Te Awamutu districts and its 24 members and two honorary members come from all over the area. There are two female members.

The club’s main fundraisers are the annual telephone directory, recycling of cans and the Weekend in Paradise, organised by John McFall and Peter Robertson.

This event is held on Anniversary Weekend. Paying guests from a wide area spend the weekend being hosted at the Pirongia Forest Park Lodge.

They are taken on bush walks, moun-tain climbing, Yarndley’s Bush, Lake Ngaroto and other outdoor activities.

Guests are catered for and entertained by members of the club, who assist in many ways. It has proved to be a very popular and successful fundraiser.

Rotarians also man the gates for Waikato Rodeo at Kihikihi.

Funds raised assist many different organisations and causes mainly youth. Schools are assisted with books, equipment and camp fees and students to attend summer science school.

Claire Forsyth from Te Awamutu College attended last December and returned to tell the club how much she ben-efi tted from the experience.

Successful singer Brendon Liley has been encouraged by the club, while help has also been provided to sports clubs and individuals needing assistance as well as young achievers and Outward Bound attendees.

The club has hosted and sponsored students for the International Student Exchange programme and at present has a matched twin exchange in progress.

Max and Kirsten Ward are hosting Gordon Carcary from the Atherton Ta-ble Lands District, inland from Cairns, who is twinned with their son Ollie.

The boys are attending Te Awamutu College this term and will then go to Gordon’s school for a term.

Participants in mixed twin exchanges need to be aged between 14-16 years.

Kihikihi Rotary Club, together with Te Awamutu Rotary Club, takes part in friendship exchanges with other Rotary districts.

A group from a district in Somerset, England visited this month and a Group Study Exchange Team is due to visit around Anzac Weekend.

Annual competitions run by the club include the Children’s Essay Com-petition, which encourages all young people in the area to participate and be rewarded with prizes of vouchers sponsored by Paper Plus.

‘Spud in a bucket’ is another popular competition. In spring, Kihikihi School pupils and those in country areas are given a plastic bucket and a seed po-tato to grow and tend.

Just before the end of term, club members visit the schools to weigh the potatoes grown and award small prizes for the best crop.

In October the Kihikihi Garden Competition is held, with gardens judged from the road and winners rewarded with garden vouchers sponsored by local nurseries.

A Rural-Urban Meeting is staged annually, with club members visiting a rural area and inviting local residents to a meeting with a special guest speaker.

Supper is served and a donation is made either to the local hall committee or a school as chosen by the local guests.

The Pirongia Forest Park Lodge was designed and built by a committee comprising members from both Kihikihi and Te Awamutu Rotary Clubs.

It is now run by a trust but volunteers from Kihikihi Rotary help with maintenance. The lodge is popular for school camps and other groups at weekends. Enquiries and book-ings should be directed to PO Box 147, Te Awamutu.

Aussies run ragged by NZ in polo testKiwis turn halftime defi cit into record winning margin

CUP JOY: Australasian Gold Cup winners New Zealand after their record breaking test win over Australia at Paul Kay’s Nga Rakau ground. From left, Angus McKelvie, Simon Keyte, player of the match John-Paul Clarkin and Thomas Wilson. 0460517AD

By Colin ThorsenNew Zealand produced a

stunning second half revival to thrash Australia 16-8 in the polo international at Kihikihi on Saturday.

Kihikihi polo historian Archie Kay cannot recall a bigger win-ning margin by New Zealand over Australia.

It took an inspirational half-time pep-talk from coach Cody Forsythe to turn the game on its head after New Zealand made

an uncharacteristic slow start to the test.

They trailed 7-5 at halftime after leading 2-0.

The damage was done in a brilliant fourth chukka when the Kiwis scored fi ve unanswered goals to take a 10-7 lead.

They kept the Australians scoreless again in the fi fth chukka, while scoring two goals themselves to boot.

The Australians looked ‘gun shy’ as they tried to close NZ

down by playing percentage polo - something you cannot do at this level.

New Zealand never let the foot off the throat, winning the sixth and fi nal chukka 4-1 to complete the eight goal rout.

Player of the match, New Zealand No 3 John Paul Clarkin scored fi ve of his team’s goals, Simon Keyte six, Angus McK-elvie three (on test debut) and Thomas Wilson two.

Double marlin strikeBy Colin Thorsen

Te Awamutu fi sherman Greg Barclay is stoked to have fi nally landed his fi rst marlin after four years trolling at Kawhia and Raglan.

The 40-year-old Kawhia Boating Club member’s wife Abi says he’s been desperate to catch one for years - he’s ‘fi shing mad’.

Barclay was aboard a 5.05 Buccaneer boat - borrowed from Rollos Marine, Hamilton, while his new boat was still being built.

He and his mate Roy Vellara were at Kawhia fi shing for kahawai and snap-per, with two lures out the back for good luck.

They were targeting large kingfi sh on these particular lures.

Barclay says after boating 11 kaha-wai and one albacore, Vellara was more than happy but kept requesting for more albacore.

In slightly deeper water at 11.05am, Barclay sighted the marlin taking the lure 90 degrees to the boat.

“Within a second, both rods were screaming.”

In sheer panic, he and his mate real-ised that they had two marlin hooked up at the same time.

After fi ve minutes of losing line, both fi sh (going in different directions) were confi rmed.

The reel, of the fi sh landed, remained in the rod holder while they endeav-oured to play the fi sh on the other line.

Unfortunately, Barclay’s Gold reel malfunctioned.

The end result - the rod was aban-doned with the fi sh having at least 1km of line and still going.

Barclay says many cell phone calls and VHF calls proceeded.

The decision was then made for Bar-clay to take control of the rod, with Vel-lara to man the boat.

The latter had a hard time doing fi ve things at a time as per Barclay’s instruc-tion - sometimes performing certain ac-robatics to keep the fi sh on the line.

It took the two ‘very tired’ fi shermen one hour and 58 minutes to land the 132.5kg striped marlin aboard ‘No

Name’ - the borrowed boat.It gave both of them a huge adrenaline

rush. They had seen the fi sh come to within

two to three metres of the boat on fi ve separate occasions before fi nally manag-ing to gaff and land it.

Vellara emigrated from India to New Zealand three years ago.

He says India has a different type ocean atmosphere and, of course, the types of fi shes were different.

“The procedure used to fi sh is entirely different too.”

NZ go on rampage

IN DEMAND: A week after performing the national anthems at the polocrosse test, Kihikihi vocalist Charles Panapa was called on again for the Trans Tasman polo test. 0460521AD

From page 17.Coach Cody Forsythe

was ecstatic after his team outscored the Australians 11-1 in the second half.

“We didn’t do the fun-damentals right in the fi rst half,” he said.

“You can’t pinch the ball off the opposition at this level, they’re too good.”

Forsythe said Aus-tralia were in front at halftime simply because New Zealand were be-ing dominated at the lineouts.

He instructed his players to ‘nail’ the Aus-tralians, then get the ball in the lineout.

“We had to change the tempo, win the ball at lineouts and set play, then control it by slow-ing everything down.”

The coach’s master plan worked a treat - there was only ever one team in it after the break.

Forsythe, a former eight goal interna-tional, showed what a very good tactician and strategist he is.

He reads the game intelligently.

It was surprising that New Zealand ran away with it consider-ing there was only two goals handicap between the two sides - New Zea-land 26, Australia 24.

Test umpire and former England inter-national Wil Lucas was most impressed by the

Kiwi team effort.“It was a pretty em-

phatic victory.“It would have to be

rated right up there with the very best Kiwi test wins.”

Australian captain Glen Gilmore was gra-cious in defeat, saying New Zealand were clearly the better team on the day.

He did warn the Kiwis, however, that the Australians will be determined to exact revenge when the two teams meet again on April 3 in Sydney.

The Tsunami relief fund was boosted by $2400 from the polo test after Bayleys Real Estate put up $100 for every goal scored.

NAIL IN COFFIN: Simon Keyte scores the first of New Zealand’s four goals in the final chukka to seal Australia’s fate. 0460521BD

Mum’s number 1

MUM’S MY WORD: John-Paul Clarkin gets a celebratory kiss from his mother Chele after being named player of the international polo test between New Zealand and Australia at Kihikihi on Saturday. 0460521AD

New Zealand No 3 John-Paul Clarkin was a popular recipi-ent of both individual awards presented after New Zealand’s record breaking 16-8 polo vic-tory over Australia.

The 26-year-old was named player of the test, along with taking out best pony with his fi ve-year-old Cranberry.

Clarkin scored fi ve goals as well as setting up a number of others.

He sparked the goal of the match, running the ball 200m down the left hand fl ank with

tremendous stick work. He then played the ball off to the near post where his cousin Simon Keyte made a hard set-up look easy by scoring from an acute angle.

Clarkin said he was thrilled with his team’s performance.

“It doesn’t get much better than that.

“We played a lot better in the last half once we got on our bet-ter horses.

“The Australians were at a slight disadvantage playing on borrowed horses.”

New Zealand No 2 Simon Keyte, who top scored for New Zealand with six goals, echoed his cousin’s words, saying it was a very pleasing victory.

“They (the Australians) are always tough to play.

“We’ll certainly treasure this win, it was a bit special.”

Newcomer Angus McKelvie (Rangitikei) became more in-volved the further the game went, scoring three of his team’s last fi ve goals.

Thomas Wilson played to the top of his form at the back.

IN MEMORIAM

FITZGERALD - Andrew Neil (Andy). In loving memory of Andy,

February 15 2004, aged 26 years.

A Mother’s Son. Your passing was so tragic you were much too young to die. It took away a mother’s son, it made me mourn and cry. I gaze out the window, and sometimes run out the door.

Hoping the motorbike engine I’ve just heard, Is you cruising up the driveway once more.

Sadly I walk back inside, my head hanging low, People just don’t realise how much I miss you so.

I sometimes pass your old watering holes, Where you used to go with your friends to socialise,

Where you’d listen to the music, dirty dance and rock n rolled. Tis the little things, like ciggie butts, clothes, towels n things,

I used to find scattered about or lying on the floor. Aren’t there for me to pick up any more.

I miss those emails from fittysfun. The chair by the computer, where you used to sit,

Remains empty when I am not using it. Not only were you my son and friend, But someone I could always depend.

Because your father whom is almost blind, Finds it hard to manage some of the time,

You were there to help with things we couldn’t do. You smile and cheeky grin, would light up any room, And your laughter and humour would chase away the gloom.

Weeks and months have grown day by day, It’s now a year since that fateful day,

Thoughts of you are none the less, Of a mother’s son whom I loved and won’t ever forget.

A heart so honest and wonderfully kind, Andy you left some beautiful memories behind.

Te Awamutu Courier and Tracs give readers the chance to celebrate Mark Knopfl er’s two New Zea-land shows next March by winning a double pass to his New Plymouth concert.

He plays New Plymouth’s Bowl of Brooklands on Saturday, March 19 and Christchurch two nights later. Tickets for New Plymouth are avail-able from Tracs.

He is known as the voice, the songs and the guitar of Dire Straits.

There are few art-ists who can lay claim to one of the best selling albums of all time.

Very few can de-clare they founded and fronted what was once the biggest rock band in the world.

Even fewer can say they performed three times for HRH’s Charles and Diana, or had the honour of

fronting the 70th birthday celebrations of the great Nelson Mandela.

And there are very few men who can survive a motorcycle accident which broke

nine bones and threat-ened his playing for good, with Zen-like calm, resolve it like it

was a front-wheel-pranged mountain bike.

But master tune-smith, and guitar m a s t e r m i n d , Mark Knopfl er can... and has.

To be in to win simply put your

name, address and daytime contact number on the back of a stand-

ard sized envelope, address it to the ‘Mark Knopfl er Competition’ and make sure it reaches our offi ce by 5pm Friday.
