PEARL HARBOR REMEMBRANCE DAY Today marks eight decades since the shocking attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii that propelled the U.S. into World War II. More than 2,400 peo-ple were killed when hundreds of Japanese planes bombed American service members and civilians on U.S. soil on Dec. 7, 1941, dubbed "a date which will live in infamy" by then-President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day will be observed at Hawaii's Pearl Har-bor National Memorial with multiple events, including a ceremony for the 429 USS Oklahoma crew members killed during the attack. Each year, the National Memorial marks Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day by com-memorating how it "was a catalyst that led to a changed world." This year, the memorial is focusing on the "long and difficult road to peace."
SEASON OF SHIVERS Winter officially arrives on December 21, 2021 and The 2022 Old Farmer’s Almanac says to prepare for a “Season of Shivers.” According to the latest edition of The Old Farmer’s Almanac, this winter will be punc-tuated by positively bone-chilling, below-average temperatures across most of the U.S. “This coming winter could well be one of the longest and coldest that we’ve seen in years,” says Janice Stillman, editor of The Old Farmer’s Almanac. For 230 years, the Almanac has been helping readers to prepare for winter’s worst with its 80 percent–accurate weather fore-casts. In some places, the super cold of the coming winter will also bring lots of snow. This extreme wintry mix is expected in areas of New Eng-land as well as throughout the Ohio Valley, in northern portions of the Deep South, and in southeast New Mexico. Above-average snowfall is also in the forecast along a track from eastern Montana southward through the western halves of the Dakotas and into northeastern Colo-rado. While temperatures in this midcountry strip will be relatively nor-mal, snowfall will be abundant, with several storms predicted throughout the winter. Meanwhile, most western areas will remain relatively dry, with all but the Pacific Coast itself and portions of the Southwest experiencing the frigid cold predicted for much of the rest of the country.
2023 CASINO AND HORSE RACING TRACKS Two cities in western Nebraska could open casinos and horse racing tracks as soon as 2023. Sean Boyd is the president of Global Gaming Nebraska, which has filed applications with the Nebraska Gaming Com-mission to build casinos in Gering and North Platte. Boyd said his Okla-homa-based company, which affiliates with the Chickasaw Nation, wants to operate the casinos with help from the community. “Given that the state of Nebraska is a newly legislated market for the gaming industry, we think it’s very important that we’re prepared to work very hard to be good listeners,” Boyd said, “and ultimately long-term partners in all of these communities in which we intend to operate.” He said he has plans to hire Nebraska contractors to build the estimated $50 million facilities, which would include horse racing tracks in order to comply with new state legislation. The site would add 150 jobs to Gering, according to Boyd’s market analysis. The company expects millions in sales tax revenue for the towns, while substantially adding to Nebraska’s property tax credit. Boyd said Global Gaming has received approval from the Gering and North Platte local governments. Now, it's up to the state to approve rules, then review and make decisions on several applications.

Sam Haiby scored 10 of her 13 points in the fourth quarter to
help Nebraska rally from a four-point fourth-quarter deficit for a
70-67 women’s basketball win at Minnesota on Monday night at
Williams Arena. With the victory, Nebraska improved to 9-0 and
opened Big Ten play with a road win in an arena the Huskers had
not won in since Dec. 31, 2017. It was just NU’s third all-time win
over the Golden Gophers in Minneapolis, although NU improved
its all-time record against Minnesota to 16-12. Nebraska’s Jaz
Shelley continued her outstanding play with 15 points while
adding five assists and four rebounds. The 5-9 sophomore from
Moe, Australia helped the Huskers to a 13-point lead early in the
second quarter with eight first-half points, including a pair of
first-quarter threes. The Huskers return home for the first time
in three weeks when Nebraska plays host to Indiana State on
Saturday at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Tip-off between the Big Red
and the Sycamores is set for 1 p.m.
