Gallery guards organize the field during MastersThe fact that golfers and spectators from

across the country come to Augusta for theMasters each year is common knowledge.

But what about the gallery guards, thepeople who make sure spectators are wheretheyre supposed to be?

    Laurens Streetbridge closesdue to erosion

Erosion damage to the Laurens Streetbridge on Colleton Avenue from Sunday

evenings rain willkeep the bridge closedfor repairs for an indef-inite period of time.

The South CarolinaDepartment of Trans-portation closed thebridge Monday morn-ing because of a par-

tial failure of the bridge, according to JeffTerry, a resident construction engineer forAiken County.

It looks like part of the earth embank-ment either washed or collapsed or both andfell out from under the end of the support ofthe bridge, Terry said. Right now, weretrying to figure out how to stabilize it andkeep any further damage from occurring.

Terry could not speculate on how long thebridge might need to be closed.

Were just getting started with the pro-

cess right now, he said. Well have todevelop a plan for addressing where we gofrom here.

The area around South Boundary Avenueand Laurens Street is closed, except to localtraffic, and detour signs have been posted inthe area directing traffic down Park Avenueand Chesterfield Street to reach SouthBoundary Avenue and avoid the bridge, according to Aiken Public Safety.
