Grammar• Rule #4b- Use commas with interrupters. Use commas to

set off nonessential clauses and nonessential participial phrases.

• A nonessential clause or participial phrase is one containing information that isn’t needed to understand the main idea of the sentence.

Examples• My cousin, walking home one day, found a large snapping

turtle.• That scarf, which is real silk, was made in India.

• Don’t get these confused with essential phrases or clauses- one that cannot be left out without changing the meaning of the sentence. Essential clauses and phrases are not set off by commas. • Example: A book written by Maxine Hong Kingston is about
