Our students started back today looking refreshed and excited and our teachers report, that they are certainly engaged and enthusiastic, which is great to see. This term we have three students from Macquarie University joining our school as part of their professional experience. We are very excited to have them at Epping North, as they are the next generation of educators who will be teaching our children. It is my belief that providing quality professional experience opportunities for these future educators is central to the ongoing development of our profession, and in turn, the engagement of our students in exciting and enriching learning experiences in the future. The Home School Liaison Officer has recently reviewed attendance statistics for our school, highlighting a number of attendance concerns. There are a number of students with attendance rates below 85% which is the threshold for intervention. We do understand that with the recent levels of sickness, many students have required significant numbers of days off to recuperate, however there are a number of students for whom this level of attendance has been an ongoing pattern throughout the year. By law, students must attend school every day unless they are sick. Our Home School Liaison Officer noted an increasing percentage of partial absences from students arriving late or departing early from school, the vast majority of which are classed as unjustified’. Please assist our community in improving these statistics, by ensuring your child attends school each day, unless they are sick, and that they arrive promptly and ready to learn. PRINCIPALS MESSAGE

SCHOOL NEWS

Interschool Snowsports

In the first week of the school holidays, a small team of girls from Epping North competed in the Interschools Snowsports regional competition held at Perisher. In what I can only imagine was a nightmare for the Organisers, the snow arrived late, leaving fewer lifts operating, and some courses closed. For the Epping North team, this meant that some of their races were moved from day to night-time, adding freezing temperatures and icy snow to the challenges that they faced. It was wonderful to see them work hard in the lead up to their events, to overcome fears, and to do their best on the day. For each of our girls, it was the first time any of them had been in an actual race. They all did Epping North proud. Congratulations to Amelia R who made it through to the next round of the competition, and will go on to represent Epping North in the Northern States Championships to be held at Perisher in mid-August. She will be competing against finalists from Queensland, New South Wales and the ACT in both Snowboard Cross, and Snow Board Giant Slalom. We wish her the best of luck. As this was our first experience with Interschools, it surpassed all expectations, and proved to be not only a lot of fun, but an amazing experience for all involved. For all interested families, stay posted for next year’s dates. We look forward to doing it all again in 2020!!

P & C NEWS EPPING NORTH PUBLIC SCHOOL – WORKING BEE

Come and get your hands dirty at our next working bee and be treated to a sausage sizzle whilst we sit back and admire our hard work.

No skills necessary, just a willingness to get stuck in and help keep our grounds looking beautiful and ready for our 2019 P&C School Fair.

The P&C will hold working bees throughout the year. These will take place on a Sunday.

Helpers are welcome anytime between 10am and 1pm.

When: Sunday, 4th August 2019

Where: Under the COLA next to the canteen.

We are looking to build on the great work that has already been done across the school.

At Epping North Public School, we are so lucky to have such beautiful grounds. We are also very fortunate to have Glenn Gallagher who does a brilliant job maintaining our lawns etc. Any help we can offer him puts that extra shine on the school and makes it a much more enjoyable place for us all. Our working bee efforts do not go un-noticed and are appreciated by all the students and teaching staff.

This term we need help with:

• General tidy up in preparation for the P&C School Fair.

WHAT TO BRING

We have a small supply of brooms, rakes, shovels etc. but you may like to bring your own gardening gloves & rakes. Wearing a hat & sunscreen is recommended.

Kids are welcome to come and join in.

If you are able to attend, please notify Justin Broad (P&C Grounds Maintenance Coordinator) so we can plan ahead. Please feel free to send through any suggestions for future projects.

This term, in addition to our regular menu, we are looking forward to continuing to offer a variety of fresh, healthy and home-made meal options. So be sure to keep an eye out for Meal of the Week to see which delicious dishes are being cooked up in the kitchen for our kids – and make sure you have your orders in on Flexi-schools by 8:00 am Wednesday mornings to avoid missing out.

CHESS CLUB NEWS Learn to be a chess champion! Coaching for students at Epping North Public School is held on Fridays from 3:15pm to 4:15pm, starting on 26 July 2019. Learning and playing chess helps children develop their logical thinking and problem solving skills, improves their concentration and focus, while also being a great source of enjoyment. Activities include group lessons on a demonstration chess board or interactive whiteboard, puzzle solving and fun practice games. Students earn merit awards by making checkmates, or by displaying skills and positive qualities, which all good chess players strive to develop. If your child is interested in taking part, you can collect an enrolment form from the school office, or email [email protected] for a copy.
