Alana Marshall – Reading for Pleasure and Wellbeing Workshop

11.15am – 12.45pm

Alana Marshall’s passion for everything biblio-related led her to begin writing her online blog ‘The Library Within’. This has served as an expression of her enchantment with literature, libraries, lifelong learning and the engagement provided by the words of others.

‘The Library Within’ has now grown to encompass a bibliotherapy offering alongside other affiliated book-related services. Alana champions ‘deep reading’ and reading as a tool for lifelong personal development. Her cause is using reading to learn, grow, connect, recharge and find time outside technology to glean insight, reflect and build compassion – all of which she believes contributes to improved mental health.

Join Alana in this interactive workshop, where you can explore ideas and strategies for using your reading for personal and social change. This will span fostering reading insights with respect to personal wellbeing, community contribution development and life transitions. There will also be book-sharing time – a forum that will allow attendees to muse and discuss relevant books for different life themes.

Lynne Leonhardt – Step Up, Mrs Dugdale

2pm – 3pm

In 1867, Henrietta Augusta Dugdale – dairywoman of Queenscliff – is pushed to breaking point and leaves her fourteen-year marriage. With access to her children denied, she enters the freethinking world of Melbourne bohemia and sets out to change the law that casts women as property, with no legal rights of their own.

A fearless crusader for women’s justice, the indefatigable ‘Mrs D’ outclasses those who try to silence or belittle her, all the while haunted by the loss of her three sons, the dark undercurrents of the past and the mysterious fate of her first love.

From newfound facts and family memorabilia, Lynne Leonhardt has created a luminous tale of love, loss, triumph and fortitude, set against the evocative coastal landscape of Port Phillip Bay and the wonder-city of Melbourne at the height of the gold-rush boom. Step Up, Mrs Dugdale is an unforgettable portrait of a pioneering suffragist – a hero for women, a trailblazer for her time.

Holden Sheppard – Invisible Boys

But all three boys hide who they really are. When the truth is revealed, will it set them free or blow them apart?

Holden Sheppard is an award-winning Young Adult author born and bred in Geraldton, Western Australia. His debut novel Invisible Boys won the 2018 City of Fremantle T.A.G. Hungerford Award and was published by Fremantle Press in October 2019.
