Uniform Just a friendly reminder to parents and students about the wearing of the correct uniform at school. This time of year it is starting to get cold and we are noticing lots of non school jumpers and coloured socks being worn by students. The school uniform policy has been added to this newsletter to remind us all of the correct uniform.

of June. Please try to stay on top of these instalments to avoid large sums owing towards the end. Many families still have not paid a deposit. It is very important that we know numbers before the end of this term. If either camp is cancelled due to COVID 19, families will receive a full refund.

Video assembly This Monday’s Video assembly featured a Gold Bar 3 presentation for Evie. Congrats Evie! Mr Thomson spoke about the school toilets and the rules around the respectful treatment of these facilities. He also spoke about bus lines and how important it is to follow school rules in bus lines. If families could please have these discussions with their children at home that would be great. When we all treat our school and its members with respect it makes for a better all-round experience for everyone in it.

Mrs Nakita Hellman Over the last month Kindergarten have been lucky enough to have Mrs Nakita Hellman completing her teaching internship with Mrs Lawlor and KL. She has built a fantastic rapport with the children and they have loved having her in the classroom. The children have particularly loved reading with her and playing 'brain break' activities. Mrs Hellman's last day at Milton Public School is Monday 22nd June. We are going to miss her in KL and we wish her all the best with her teaching career and we hope to see her back at Milton Public School in the near future.

Library News Students are able to borrow and return books to the library each morning, lunchtime and allocated class borrowing day. There are a number of overdue books that now need to be returned. Please have a look around the home for any Milton Public School books and return to the library with your child. The school library books will have a barcode on the back or inside the back cover with ‘Milton Primary School’ written on the label. They have also been stamped inside the front and back covers. Any class or take home readers need to be returned to the classroom. These books do not have a barcode attached. Students in kindergarten, year one and year two require a library bag to borrow. This could be a shopping bag or any other protective bag. Years three, four, five and six are able to borrow one book without a bag and up to four books with a bag. This year Book Week has been postponed to term four. The theme is ‘Curious Creatures, Wild Minds’.

Premier’s Reading Challenge The Challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely. All K-6 students are invited to participate. Books read by students can be back dated to August 2019. Due to Covid 19 there are some rule changes. Key changes include: All students will be able to include 10 choice books on

their 2020 student reading records. All students will be able to include books read as part of

collaborative reading with teachers or parents/ carers, either in person or online.

Students who do not complete the Challenge in 2020 will not be disadvantaged from achieving cumulative PRC awards in the future.

Student work of the week: Jack Year 5 - The Lying Scientist It was a dark stormy day with lightning around. Over the hills there was a big pound. Next to the pound there was an old scientist, who ran his very own biochemist. The man was quiet and private they say. He thought it best to just stay away but one day that all changed as the man went away to find some children to use as his prey! He told a small boy, “to follow me for there is candy this way”. Of course, he was lying. As he tied the little boy to a big leather chair. It was like a real-life nightmare!! The boy slipped away and I am happy to say as he ran away. Aimon Year 6- Shark in a tub Darkness approaches: Lonely, cold, dark, the salty wind blows hard in my tired, soar face. Thirsty i lick my dry lips in pain. “WHAT HAVE I DONE?”. Slowly i watched my boat slip into the cold, dark sea. I sit in my tub feeling sick as the giant waves crash around me. Daylight: Sunburn, pain, blisters, nowhere to hide, help me. Slowly, circling around the shiny tub, the shark has big, sharp teeth, hanging from its mouth. It bumps the tub, the girl is scared for her life. She sees turtles all around her, she is calm, scared, she sees land. Found an island: Soft, smooth sand climbs up her leg. She found a palm tree. She lays under the tree. The cold breeze rushes over her head. She sees a light in the distant sky. Faster and faster the light speeds towards her. BANG She open her eyes, the wax burns her face, “Where am I”, she screams?” Slowly she remembers “That’s, right I was having a bath”.

‘Wow Us With Writing!’ Challenge Two Congratulations to Eva, Sahara, Lorelai, Joey and Bahlie for being prize winners for Challenge Two of our ‘Wow Us With Writing!’ competition. Students needed to write a persuasive text to convince others to eat their favourite meal once a week. Eva’s favourite dinner is chicken drumsticks and it is ‘definitely a good dish’. Sahara says that tacos are ‘simply scrumptious!’ According to Lorelai, pizza is a ‘mouth watering explosion of stringy, gooey cheese’. Joey was successfully able to argue that lasagne ‘gives you a good serve of veggies.’ Whilst Bahlie had to work extra hard to convince me that I should ‘give shephard’s pie a try!’ It was a fantastic effort by all students who entered the competition.

Mirida Colouring-in Competition Mirida is running a colouring-in competition. This is a National Reconciliation Week initiative from Copyright Agency Reading Australia. Chae Moloney, our Aboriginal Education Officer, will be visiting many classes over the next two weeks to share the story ‘There Once was a Boy’ by Dub Leffler. This is a beautiful picture book about friendship, forgiveness and reconciliation. Students will be given the colouring-in sheet by their teacher, to be completed at school or at home. All entries need to be handed in to either Chae or Mrs Rafidi by the 1

The Fathering Project: Building a positive attitude towards learning and school Recent research shows that fathers have a significant impact on academic achievement and children’s attitude towards learning and school is very strongly influenced by their father. If you model and encourage a love of learning you will be setting your child up for success throughout their life. Everyone has different memories of their time in school – some are very positive, but others may be less so. Of course, your personal experiences and memories may affect your attitude towards school and education. However, it is important that we allow our children the opportunity to enjoy school and form a positive attitude toward learning. If your attitude is positive, your children will be more likely to begin the new experience of school with excitement and positivity. As your kids move through their school years, it is important to keep emphasising the importance of learning and keep encouraging them to get the most out of their school experience. As fathers, you might ask yourself, what are my children learning from me? What do I teach them with my actions and words, and my own attitude toward learning? What are they learning from their dad about ‘having-a-go’ and trying your best? Do I show them how to make and learn from their mistakes, and how to work with and respect others? What do they see and hear from me every day? Top tips for encouraging a good attitude to learning Focus on the positives. Praise your school for the good things that you see being done. Send a note to the teacher or write in their diary when you are pleased with what he/she is doing. Approach learning with positive messages. Ask your children about what they have learnt at school each day. Ask them questions about what they are learning, and ask about their thoughts and opinions about new topics they are learning about. Take an interest in your child’s school. Read the school newsletter or other notice board and discuss the schools events and news with your child – over a meal, or on the way to or from school. Show respect for all teachers and be careful about the words and actions your child hears and sees. Take an interest in your child’s homework and assignments. Ask your child if they would like to discuss anything with you. Reward your child for their approach. Notice and recognise their approach to learning, effort in homework, and attitude towards their work. Use positive reinforcement (words and actions) to let them know you can see they are working hard or doing well

– this encouragement from dad will go a long way.
