Tena Koutou Katoa, Talofa Lava, Kia Orana, Ni Sa Bula, Fakalofa Lahi Atu, Malo e Lelei, Greetings.

This quote comes from a Letter that our Founder wrote to his Lasallian Teaching Brothers in 1680. France at the time was plagued by poor hygiene, food was scarce, living conditions were crowded and sadly education was reserved for the noble and rich, the young Catholic children of this period were denied an education.

It was De La Salle’s vision and mission to provide an education for these young Catholic students as this would lift them out of the cycle of poverty and hopelessness that they were previously destined for.

De La Salle’s teachers often despaired at the enormity of the task they faced in educating their students and often felt like giving up and walking away from this mission, hence the encouraging letter of support he sent them.

At our College Assembly this week I spoke about Resilience and “bouncing back”, using our Founders example.

Young men will face failings and disappointments as a normal part of their life and how they deal with these adds to their resilience and character.

While our priority as a College is to acknowledge and congratulate our students for achieving notable success, it is also our role as educators to help them deal with failure losses and disappointments.

How do we approach this:

School Assesments - what if my mark is not as good as I expected?

From the Principal - Myles Hogarty

Solution: Talk with my Teacher about where I went wrong. Study more. Attend a Tuition class at school.

Sports Team - What if I am not picked in the A side?

Solution: Train harder in the pre-season. Practice my skills in the backyard. Play even harder for the “B” team.

Music - What if I am having difficulty learning my instrument?

Solution: Practise harder each night. Get some help from the College Music teacher.

Home Life - What if I am not getting my own way at home?

Solution: Assist more at home to make my parents lives easier. Help more with my brothers and sisters. Accept the decisions of my parents.

While many at these solutions don’t fit into a young man’s desire for instant gratification, and a quick-fix solution, it is very important that they understand that difficulties are not always re-solved instantly and the benefits of delayed gratifi-cation, due to their own hard work, perseverance and determination will benefit their resilience in the long term.

The resilience of the young men in the College is aptly stated in our adopted College Theme for 2015 “Be Not Afraid”.

Mother’s Day: From my own experience of my

Mother to the many mothers of the young men at De La Salle College, I acknowledge these wonderful mums as the “Heart”, of many families.

I urge all of our young men to treasure their mothers, love them dearly and to thank God for the unconditional support which they have given to make them into the young men they are today.

To the mums of De La Salle men, expect some spe-cial treatment from the men in your life. Put your feet up, give yourself a pat on the back and let those men look after you. Let them say thanks to the “Heart of the Home”.

God Bless

NCEA Progress Term 2 is busy and important term for all boys. For Year 11 – 13 students there will be large amounts of Internal Assessment to be completed inside and outside of class. Remember that students and families can keep track of progress on the KAMAR parent portal or through the NZQA website. We encourage students to set targets and plans for the term. Previous years have shown us that an indication that a Year 11 student is on track to achieve they would have achieved 40 credits by the end of the term. For Year 12 and 13 students 30 – 40 credits would indicate that they are on track by the end of the Term. Year 12 and 13 students should also be thinking how they will meet the University Entrance requirements and which subjects they are on track to achieve 14+ credits. Great work with writing in Health and Religious Education

One of the biggest challenges for our De La Salle boys is developing their academic writing skills. Success at NCEA Level 1, 2 and 3 is Our Health and PE and Religious Education teachers have been trialling the use of a writing technique called PEEL. The PEEL technique is designed to make academic writing easier while lifting the quality of written arguments, evaluations and descriptions. Next time your son is struggling with a writing task for homework suggest they try the PEEL structure.

All Year 7 and 8 parents are invited to attend the second Year 7 and 8 Home School Partnership Meeting at school. The purpose of this meeting is to strength-en the link between home and school. It has been proven that close communica-tion between parents and school will raise student achievement.

Last Saturday on ANZAC at the Papatoetoe Commemoration James McCormick made a tremendous emotional keynote speech on behalf of the students of South Auckland. His speech was warmly received and I lost count of the number of veterans and spectators who wished to congratulate him on how his speech was pitched perfectly to strike a chord with the onlookers. I have received appreciative emails this week describing his contribution as ‘fantastic’ and ‘magnificent’. Senior boys in attendance were James McCormick, Reginald Samuelu, Ben Sa’u, George Aleni, Vibin Wilson, Paramatoia Laufili, Ben Clark, Renato Pitesa, Fibber Wulf, Ratu Wye and Matthew Apuda. Also in attendance: Steve Dymond, Nigel Hurst, Anthony Hurst, Kane Raukura, Johnny Rex and Joe O’Malley and numerous other members of staff in the audience.

Young Vinnies Commissioning Mass

Young Vinnie Leaders from various Catholic Colleges around Auckland gathered for a Commissioning Mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral. Bishop Pat Dunn celebrated the Mass with hundreds of staff, parents and friends present to witness this wonderful occasion. We have 5 young men leading the Young Vinnies at De La Salle College who were commissioned. They make the executive team of Young Vinnies De La Salle:

Sam Finau (President) Ielemia Kolo (Vice-President) Kaisa Kaisa (Vice-President) James Tavite (Secretary) Lemalie Aukuso (Treasurer)

The executive team has fulfilled a couple of projects during Term 1, namely, the Caritas Lenten Appeal (Coin Collection on the driveway) and made just over $1000 as well as the Clothing Bin for St Vincent de Paul Shop. They are currently running after school programme at Monte Cecilia Emergency Housing in Mangere and planning on doing other projects at James Liston Hostel in the city.

The Young Vinnies executive team is also planning on starting the Mini-Vinnies, a group for the intermediate students (Years 7-10).

Part of a letter received from Dawson Primary School: Emmette and his brother Quentin took the initiative to design and paint a large mural on a fence in the park in order to make the space more family friendly and attractive. The mural reflected a great deal of effort and was carefully and thoughtfully designed to include the many cultures of our community.

All students are welcome. Bring along some

I believe from start to finish the entire project took them over 20 hours of work. I was very impressed by the maturity and community spirit both brothers demonstrated when the mural was tagged the brothers quickly repainted sections of the mural.

Well done Emmette & Quentin for representing De La Salle College.
