for smart meters had to become extremely well-versed in a fairly technical topic.

Fiona Taylor was in Chilliwack on Sept. 29 at a Chamber of Commerce luncheon to list the reasons, the business case and the rationale for smart meters.

“Bottom line is that we need to modern-ize the grid. Smart meters are a part of that,” Taylor said.

Rising opposition to and mistrust sur-rounding BC Hydro’s plans to bring in smart metering made headlines last week.

Some British Columbians are realizing there is no “opt out” clause since it’s an infrastructure change. The transition to smart metering is well underway, with 100,000 smart meters installed so far.

“We need the integrity of the whole sys-tem,” the BC Hydro spokeswoman said.

But calls for opting-out ability have start-ed nonetheless.

It became a hot topic at the UBCM conference when a majority of municipal leaders voted Friday for a moratorium on smart meters, and protesters with petitions set up outside the Vancouver Convention Centre.

“Smart meters will be our standard going forward,” Taylor insisted.

The ultimate goal of the smart metering program is to update the utility by replac-ing 50-year old metering equipment for an estimated 1.8 million users. The upgrade began in July.

At a cost of almost a billion dollars to implement and run the program, there is also a “conservative” estimate of $1.6 bil-lion worth of financial benefits, she said.

“That nets out to more than $500 million in benefits.”

Chilliwack RCMP have made 30 arrests of sex trade workers and suspected “johns” in an effort to clean up the streets in the city’s downtown core.

“Though some may argue that prostitu-tion and patronizing a prostitute are victim-less crimes, the police don’t see it that way,” RCMP Cpl. Tammy Hollingsworth said in a news release.

“No young girl grows up dreaming of

doing this,” she said. “Most of these street workers have had a rough life and are being exploited and degraded.”

One of the 21 women arrested is 18 years old. Twenty of the women said they are addicted to drugs.

The oldest “john” is 82 years old. Each of the nine men were arrested after offering money for sexual services and are charged with communicating for the purpose of solicitation. They were released on prom-ises to appear later in court, and ordered to stay out of the downtown core.

Over a five-week period, members of the Upper Fraser Valley Regional RCMP detachment’s crime reduction unit (CRU) identified 52 possible sex trade workers conducting business in Chilliwack’s down-town core.

A “Red Zone” identified by police, follow-ing concerns raised by local businesses and residents, stretches from Nowell Street to Williams Street and from Bole Avenue to Princess Avenue.

Municipal auditor not needed in Chilliwack: Chamber officialRobert FreemanThe Progress

Chilliwack city council doesn’t need a municipal auditor-gener-al to review its financial affairs, says Jason Lum, president of the Chilliwack Chamber of Commerce.

But that doesn’t necessar-ily mean other B.C. municipalities don’t, he added.

“Chilliwack city council has a proven track record of financial responsibility,” he said. “I have to hand it to the Chilliwack council (because) over the last nine years they’ve done a good job of keeping business taxes low.”

Lum also said Chilliwack coun-cillors and senior staff “have been open and transparent with the chamber, and we have a standing

invitation to go over the budget at any time.”

But not all B.C. municipalities “subscribe to the same kind of financial responsibility,” he said.

Lum wouldn’t name the munici-palities that don’t.

“Certainly there’s been talk about municipalities .. that rely on one or two major corporations for half their city budget,” he said.

And in some cases, he said, accounting standards are not being met.

“I think what we’re hearing from the B.C. Chamber is those stan-dards ... don’t govern how the money is being spent,” he said. “I think that’s what the municipal auditor would do.”

B.C. Chamber of Commerce president John Winter said in a Friday news release that he is “dis-

appointed” by the motion passed at the Union of B.C. Municipalities that disagrees with the need for a MAG office because “it is simply untrue ... that the requirements of the MAG’s office are already met by government legislation and regulation.”

“Nowhere is local government subject to independent, third-party analysis over how they are spend-ing taxpayers’ money and wheth-er they are getting value for that money,” he said.

But Chilliwack Mayor Sharon Gaetz said it’s not yet clear how the MAG would work, although Premier Christy Clark has indi-cated “it’s coming, and that’s the end of it.”

The legislation creating the MAG office is expected to be intro-duced sometime this month.

“The biggest issue for the UBCM is that we feel we are accountable to taxpayers,” Gaetz said. “Nobody is afraid of scrutiny. We welcome scrutiny, but we want to know (the details).”

“We want to know what the gov-ernment is trying to fix,” she said. “We’ve never had an answer to that.”

Gaetz also questioned whether an auditor-general would have the resources to review the budgets of 192 local governments in B.C.

And who would pay for time spent by municipal staff involved in the audit? she asked.

“I predict there will be slim pick-ings when it comes to (accounting issues) that have gone awry with local governments,” she said.

The Chilliwack’s city budget is already audited by a professional

accountant.The UBCM motion instructs the

executive to continue negotiations with provincial officials.

Gaetz and Lum declined to com-ment on the “qualified audit report” the B.C. government received last week, and that same govern-ment’s move to hold municipalities accountable.

Auditor-General John Doyle said in a news release that such a report “indicates to the users ... that some of the information is not auditable or is misleading.”

“During the last 15 years, this office has issued qualified audit reports on the Province’s financial statements 12 times,” he said. “For a government that strives for trans-parency and accountability, this is unacceptable.”

Four busy intersections across Chilliwack are on the list to receive a new set of traffic lights.

City council is set to vote on a tender for the signal-ization work at Tuesday’s meeting.

Three contractors bid on the 2011 Traffic Signal Program, and staff recom-mended acceptance of the lowest bid of $998,296.10, submitted by Crown Contracting Ltd.

The four intersec-tions include: Ashwell at Bernard; Tyson at South Sumas; Keith Wilson at Unsworth; and Teskey Way at Promontory.

Some relocation of power and phone poles will be necessary to complete the

installations.The four sites are at

intersections with the high-est priority for new traf-fic lights, based on traffic counts and other indica-tors assessed by city staff. Signalization improvements are expected to provide enhanced safety, more effi-cient traffic flow, and bet-ter facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.

City completed design engineering and received a total of three bids for the work which may include intersection traffic lane re-configuration as well as fully actuated pedestrian and vehicle signalization.

Prices were also received by Martens Asphalt ($1.1 million) and Lafarge Canada ($1.3 million).

“Traffic, traffic, traffic.”That was the concern of

Sacha Peter to a new resi-dential development pro-posed in the Lindell Beach area near Cultus Lake.

Peter is chair of the Cultus Lake Park board, but traffic was his personal concern,

not the board’s, which is one of several agencies asked to review the proposed devel-opment at 1687 Columbia Valley Road.

But Jon Van Geel, a principal at Frosst Creek Developments Ltd. and Cultus Country Investments Ltd., said most of the resi-dents living in the proposed 128 bare-land strata lots will

likely be full-time and won’t add to the weekend traffic congestion seen at Cultus Lake.

An application to rezone the property to a new Private Resort Residential Development designation that allows year-round resi-dential use is now before the Fraser Valley Regional District.

A traffic study has been requested by FVRD plan-ners.

Dave Lamson, FVRD director for the area, agreed traffic congestion in the summer and weekends at the Vedder Crossing Bridge is a concern.

“We need to have another bridge access (to Cultus Lake),” he said. “That’s something that needs to be looked at.”

However, he said he is not opposed to the develop-ment, because the full-time residential housing will have

sewer and water systems built to standards.

Van Geel said the new development is at a site that once held a 300-unit trailer park, so traffic should actu-ally be less than seen in the past.

Van Geel said the new subdivision will be similar to the Cottages At Cultus Lake, except buyers will have the “option” of year-round use, and it will be marketed toward retirees and families interested in “agriculture-recreation.”

mated meter reading, it also reduces “rate pres-sure” for consumers.

“It’s a very powerful

business case,” Taylor added.

It’s important to grasp the concrete benefits of the $930 million pro-gram, and she mapped

some of them out for a small Chilliwack crowd on Thursday.

She took on the myths and fear-monger-ing about health, safety

and privacy concerns, which continue to vex officials despite the mas-sive information blitz the utility’s communication experts have been wag-

ing. “There is a fair bit

of misinformation out there, so we’re trying to clear that up,” Taylor said.

Simple analogies were used like the fact that the radio frequency emitted from a smart meter over its 20-year lifespan is the equivalent to a 30 minute cell phone call. That is very low compared to other types of wireless and RF exposure, she argued.

The meters, located outside, communicate for “less than a minute” in total each day, she underlined, and health officials say there are no known health risks.

The power signal is below the world’s strict-est standards, they found out after more than four years of research. The meter does not send out data continuously but rather it stores it, and then transmits the data three or four times a day.

But still the distrust of wireless tools persists.

“We believe it’s com-ing from a place of fear,” she said. “We will contin-ue to answer questions, but there is a percentage that will never be con-vinced.”

The change means the use of meter readers will be dramatically reduced by about 99 per cent, Taylor said, responding to a question about job losses.

“Does it mean the end of meter readers?” one luncheon attendee wanted to know.

It won’t technically be BC Hydro employ-ees losing their jobs, she said, but rather employ-ees of Accenture.

“One of the things

people don’t know is that BC Hydro outsources that facet of its opera-tion,” she said, adding it was unknown how many Accenture jobs will be eliminated with the switch to smart meter-ing.

“Eventually everyone will be moving to auto-mated meter reading,” she said.

Privacy should not be a concern, she said.

“We collect hourly data and that’s it,” she said. “Once it flows through the meter we don’t know what hap-pens to it.”

BC Hydro simply does not have access to any other details about residents or businesses’ use of power — except in terms of volumes mea-sured once the electric-ity hits the “terminus” of the meter.

New meters will sig-nificantly reduce elec-tricity theft and meter tampering, which makes safer communities and lowers hydro rates, she argued. An outage gets flagged immediately on a map after a signal is sent out in the meter’s “last gasp” of function-ality before the power goes out.

The old meters will be removed and the power will be shut off for about a minute. The decom-missioned meters will be broken down into com-ponents and recycled, she said.

David Miller, a Chilliwack man charged with the second-degree murder of his wife, has been found fit to stand trial, despite his ever-diminishing mental abil-ities due to Huntington’s Dementia.

However, given the slow pace of court hear-ings Miller may yet be found unfit to stand trial

Supreme Court Justice Brian Joyce said in his Sept. 28 ruling that Miller’s “cognitive capacity” could fall so low before a trial is over that “a finding of unfit-ness would be appropri-ate.”

“The issue can be re-visited if counsel or the court believes that to be the case, but I am not satisfied at this time that Mr. Miller is unfit to stand trial.”

Crown and defence lawyers are scheduled to meet Friday to fix a date for trial.

Joyce said in his rea-sons for judgment that, based on the evidence before him, he could not find that Miller is unable, on account

of mental disorder, to understand the court proceedings against him or understand the possible consequences, two of the three tests of fitness for trial.

“Mr. Miller under-stands that he is facing a charge that he mur-dered his wife,” Joyce said. “He understands that he is facing a trial to determine whether he is guilty of that offence, and he understands that he facing serious potential negative con-sequences as a result.”

More problematic for Joyce, was the third test of fitness: the accused’s ability to communicate with defence counsel and so have a “mean-ingful participation” in the trial.

Defence lawyer Paul McMurray had submit-ted that Miller’s inabil-ity to communicate his mental state at the time of the offence made it nearly impossible for expert witnesses to determine whether Miller could have formed the intent nec-essary for conviction on the murder charge, or whether he should be found not criminally responsible due to a

Waldock made no sub-mission on Miller’s fit-ness to stand trial, other than the “low threshold” set by law.

According to the court document, Miller left the hospital where he was being treated for Huntington’s Dementia on Boxing Day, 2009. When he arrived at his Ryder Lake home, at some point he took a

knife from the kitchen and went to his wife Susan’s bedroom where he stabbed her to death.

“He told his daugh-ter what he had done and told her to call the police,” the document states. “Mr. Miller then sat on the deck outside the house and waited for the police to arrive.”

B.C. cities are demanding tougher scrutiny of gambling due to the infiltration of casinos by orga-nized crime.

Delegates at UBCM passed a resolution that argues the provincial Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General is in a conflict of interest because it oversees both the B.C. Lottery Corp., which runs casino gambling, and the Gaming Policy Enforcement Branch that regulates it.

Separate ministries should oversee those functions, according to the resolution, which also calls for a review of public gambling to restore confidence and a probe by the Auditor General into how charities benefit.

Council candidate Dick Harrington is asking BMO officials

to “seriously” recon-sider plans to move the Chilliwack branch at Five Corners to Eagle Landing.

An email was received

by Harrington Friday, confirming BMO’s cor-porate plans to open a new branch “in the growing Eagle Landing community.”

To date no public announcement to cus-tomers on the subject has yet been made.

Harrington argued “the branch is more than just a bank,” call-ing it a “vital anchor point” in Chilliwack’s downtown core.

“To lose it would be akin to losing an impor-tant sibling of a family, the ‘family’ being the downtown,” he wrote in his response.

“I ask you to do more than simply give us advanced warning of a possible move. I ask you to seriously recon-sider such a move.”

Henry Donkers, BMO’s VP Vancouver Suburban District, affirmed the bank’s plans to open a new Chilliwack branch at Eagle Landing in an email dated Sept. 30.

Donkers vowed BMO would contact its cus-tomers about the move to the “new, larger, and up-to-date” branch.

“Rest assured that any official changes will be communicated to customers well in advance to ensure a smooth transition,” he said.

BMO “enjoyed being downtown” but “cities do evolve and we must adapt to the natural ebb and flow of the commu-nity,” wrote Donkers. “Additionally, we antici-pate providing longer hours of service in the new location and also hiring more staff, both a benefit to the com-munity.”

Harrington said Five Corners is a central “focal point” downtown, at the “apex” of trans-portation.

But Donkers sees potential in the new area on the north side of town.

“We believe that the new location is more

conveniently located for the vast majority of our customers,” he wrote. “The new branch will be more accessible to more of our current customers and also able to accommodate the growth that we’re witnessing in the sur-rounding area.”

BMO spokesman Mahmood Ladhani said they were unable to to supply The Progress with more details about the move at this point.

“We are in the process of finalizing thosede-tails, so I wish I could say more,” he said.

He did say a new branch location had been secured in Eagle Landing.

“But we do not have any of the dates yet related to the opening, such as the date of pos-session,” Ladhani said. “We were also disap-pointed that we were unable to communicate this with our customers first.”

“Children going to and from the schools on Yale Road, merchants, and residents in the area had all expressed concerns over the number of sex trade workers lurking and working in the area,” Hollingsworth said.

“After the identifications of the pos-sible sex trade workers were made, CRU conducted a three-week project specifically focussing on prostitution and johns in the area,” she said.

“It’s not only about the safety (of) the concerned citizens, but it is also a safety concern for the girls on the street,” she said.

Six of the 21 women had been arrested for soliciting earlier during the first two weeks of the project, and arrested again for breaching court orders to stay out of the Red Zone.

Prostitution itself is not illegal, but soliciting - communicating for the purpose trading sex for money - is a criminal code offence.

Chilliwack RCMP are investigating a stabbing incident outside the Cheam Leisure Centre Friday evening.

But neither the vic-tim nor witnesses are co-operating with the police.

“No one knows what happened except the vic-tim, who is being unco-operative,” RCMP Cpl. Tammy Hollingsworth said.

RCMP of ficers responded to a 9-1-1 call at about 5:30 p.m. and arrived to find a male emerging from the bushes outside the cen-tre with a 4- to 5-inch stab wound in the lower abdomen.

“Fortunately, it missed all the internal organs,” Hollingsworth said.

But no one so far is cooperating with police investigators, she said.

“Nobody really knows what happened,” she said.

The victim was not identified by police.

The RCMP investiga-tion continues.

Small-scale communi-ty gardens and orchards will be available to the residents, Geel said.

“It’s a cutting-edge project, and we’re very excited,” he said. “It’s extremely hard to find a property where you have land available to include agriculture with housing.”

An exclusion from the agricultural land reserve was granted by the Agriculture Land Commission last year, but about five hectares of the 13 hectares suit-able for development is still within the ALR.

A report by FVRD staff described Cultus Country Investments,

which also developed the Cottages At Cultus Lake, as showing “a commitment to excel-lence” and creating a project “unique in the FVRD.”

“But more important-ly (it) is built to proper provincial standards, promotes environmen-tally friendly design aspects, and incorpo-

rates architectural con-sultation,” staff said.

Van Geel said the cottage-style design of the new development is similar to the Cottages At Cultus Lake.

The proposed chang-es to zoning and the official settlement plan have been referred to several agencies for comment, including the

Soowahlie First Nation, Lindell Beach Residents Association, Cultus Lake Park Board and the City of Chilliwack.

If approvals are granted, Van Geel said construction could start in 2012 with a comple-tion date in 2013.


Greendale resident Garth Glassel is run-ning for a seat on coun-cil to bring a “common sense” approach to run-ning the city.

“You will get trust, honesty, transparency and above all, some accountability,” he said.

He is critical of past tax hikes of almost four per cent in Chilliwack, and pledged to fight for a zero per cent tax increase in 2012, and a three per cent decrease after that.

As someone who has run a number of small businesses, and worked as a consultant since 1989 to the motorcycle industry, Glassel said he has the business savvy needed as a mem-ber of city council.

“The economy is in the worse shape ever, seniors are struggling, and there is record unemployment,” he said. “With full-time jobs cuts to part-time, and food and gas prices sky high, council needs to be more prudent and accountable, as there is nothing left in the trough.”

Glassel, 52, has lived in Greendale for the past seven years, and spent the previous eight in Abbotsford. He grew up in Calgary, and ini-tially became an aircraft mechanical engineer before becoming a con-sultant gaining skills as a mentor, trainer and team leader.

He vows to work to bring the community together to develop a “safer” city, and is criti-cal of spending money on consultants with “no real” results from coun-cil and staff.

It was great news Friday when the Supreme Court of Canada ruled in favour of Vancouver’s Insite drug injection clinic. In a unanimous decision, the court ruled that not allowing the clinic to operate under the umbrella of a federal exemption is a viola-tion of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

“The infringement at stake (of not granting an exemption) is serious,” wrote Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin in the ruling. “It threatens the health, indeed the lives, of the claimants and others like them. The grave con-sequences that might result from a lapse in the current constitu-tional exemption for Insite cannot be ignored.”

The feds would dearly like to ignore it. But the Supreme Court has ordered the federal minister of health to grant an immediate exemption to Insite under clause

S.56 of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA), thus allowing Insite to operate.

So it should.“Insite saves lives,” said

McLachlin. “Its benefits have been proven. There has been no dis-cernible negative impact on the public safety and health objectives of Canada during its eight years of operation.”

Insite opened in September 2003

originally had a three-year exemp-tion from Section 56 of the CDSA for scientific and research purpos-es. Exemptions were extended until the feds tried to block the process leading to the Supreme Court finale.

Insite is in Vancouver’s

Downtown Eastside, home for more than one third of the esti-mated 12,000 injection drug users living in the city.

The facility’s 12 injection booths provide a safe place for drug users to inject pre-obtained drugs using clean syringes and equipment under the supervision of nurses and health care staff.

Addiction counsellors, doc-tors, and health care staff provide ongoing support for clients with addiction, mental health or HIV/AIDS issues. It’s a cross road where clients can try to explore a new life a chance.

The stats back it up. Since first opening, Insite has had more than 1.8 million visits. Last year alone there were 312,214 vis-its by 12,236 individuals. Daily visits averaged some 855 indi-viduals with an average of 587 daily injections. Twenty-six per cent were women; 17 per cent

were Aboriginal and the principal substances were heroin (36 per cent), cocaine (32 per cent) and morphine (12 per cent). Last year saw 458 admissions from Insite into Onsite, the adjoining detox treatment facility which recorded a program completion rate of 43 per cent.

More than 30 research stud-ies into aspects of addiction and treatments have been published in peer-reviewed journals around the world, all concluding that Insite saves lives and is a health benefit. The research is clear that addiction is, first and foremost, a health issue before any legal issue surfaces. The latest article in the prestigious Lancet showed that drug overdoses decreased 35 per cent within 500 metres of Insite compared to 9 per cent elsewhere in Vancouver.

“This represents a victory for science,” said Dr. Julio Montaner,

director of the BC Centre for Excellence for HIV/AIDS. “Prior attempts from the federal govern-ment to stop the activities of Insite have been ruled unconstitutional. We are thankful for the unwaver-ing support from the provincial government that has allowed us to set an example for how to deal with addiction which is a medical condition.”

The decision by the Supreme Court is a watershed moment for drug addiction policy. The con-servative government has always been against Insite. But there needs to be a cultural shift in Ottawa to understand that drug addiction needs health care, not law enforcement.

Instead of wasting tax dollars on more prisons, lawyers, and jail terms, the money should be used for health care initiatives and a coming together of harm reduc-tion and prevention approaches.

A waste of energyExcuse us if we don’t break out the tinfoil hats just yet.Despite claims by some that BC Hydro’s smart meters will harm our

health, or reveal our most inner energy secrets, there is little evidence of either.

Of course that didn’t stop a majority of municipal leaders from calling on the province to make BC Hydro halt its smart meter program – at least temporarily.

But fortunately, the provincial government will ignore the call by the Union of BC Municipalities for a moratorium. Premier Christy Clark said B.C. needs an efficient smart grid to save money on electricity delivery and foster economic growth.

BC Hydro’s Fiona Taylor was in Chilliwack last week to answer questions about the smart meter program. The crown corporation is investing about $1 billion in the infrastructure upgrade, which is aimed at bringing our electrical grid into the 21st century.

The first step is an upgrade of the antiquated utility metres that have been a fixture on homes for more than half a century. As a tool for measuring electri-cal consumption, they’ve been little use to the consumer. Instead, we count on our monthly bill to tell us how much energy we’ve used.

The smart meters will give us more timely information, allowing us to better budget our energy use. That’s a good first step toward lowering our overall consumption, which not only lowers our costs, but betters our world.

The meters will also give BC Hydro a better idea of consumption patterns and allow it to respond more quickly to power outages.

What they won’t do is allow the utility tell if you’re still using halogen light bulbs, or have that old beer fridge still purring in the garage.

Nor will the meters turn your home into a Fukushima franchise. The sig-nals emitted from the devices a few seconds each day are negligible against the background of radio signals and transmissions that exist in our every day lives.

There is no shortage of things we can worry about.But really. Smart meters aren’t worth the energy.

with a neighbour at my garage sale, they asked if I knew that the City of Chilliwack was going to put lights at the corners of South Sumas and Tyson, Watson and Tyson and Keith Wilson and Tyson. I said no, but knew this was possible because this was the same city council that paid off mortgages for sliding homes on Marble Hill and designed an over-pass that only headed west on the

highway, the Evans flyover.I would just like to know how

I am to get out of my driveway as well as the many others that face Tyson and South Sumas. It’s a nightmare now.

My other question is why we weren’t consulted like we were when they moved the stop sign and changed the right of way at the corner of Tyson and Evans?

Wouldn’t the more intelligent idea be and more cost effective

change be one-lane roundabouts to keep traffic moving?

But who am I kidding. Where is the intelligence in this council? As long as it doesn’t affect them then who cares.

I urge all residents affected by this change to voice their concerns and demand to be consulted before this stupidity takes place.

A little green goes a long way

While there are still letters regarding the outcome of the HST, not much is in the media regarding smart meters. It should be noted that the HST was defeated by 54.73 per cent majority.

The resolution from the UBCM requesting a moratorium on the installation of smart meters has also passed by 55 per cent majority vote. It should be noted the UBCM

vote was held with all of eligible voters being there and represents an accurate reflection of the legiti-macy of the concerns having been brought forward for consideration and implementation by the Liberal government. Let us see if they have the arrogance of ignoring the collective wisdom of the majority.

There can be no doubt the information supplied to the UBCM

delegates was intensely biased in favour of BC Hydro as they were the only presenters allowed at the UBCM.

Considering the legislature will be in session next week it will be interesting to see the results of the unavoidable debates that will take place at the legislature.

Running across Canada: for many of us, Terry Fox is the first name that comes to mind. Before he died of cancer in 1981, Fox made himself a legend by taking on the challenge of running across country to raise awareness and money for cancer research. He lasted 143 days and 5,373 kilo-metres on the road.

Now meet Dr. Riley Senft who is near-ing the end of an attempt to do the same unimaginable feat – using two legs to con-quer Canada and cancer.

“Terry Fox was an incredible person. He essentially said, ‘What is the hardest thing for me to do? Run? Okay then I’ll run across Canada,’” Riley says in an email interview while on the road.

“Terry had one leg, he had cancer, and he didn’t have access to the GPS or social media or any of the other technology that has evolved since he ran that I have access to and yet he managed to capture the heart of our nation and leave an incredible legacy. I don’t have cancer, I have two legs, I have a bigger support vehicle, and I still find this a huge challenge.”

People run marathons all the time. And

the 42.195 kilometres to cross the finish line is viewed as a huge test to how far the body and mind can be pushed. Riley is nearing the end of his run across Canada and is clocking roughly 60 kilometres a day, well over one marathon every 24 hours. His body is being beaten and the pavement gives no mercy.

“I still have blisters all over my feet and I have given up on the idea that I’ll ever be blister-free during this run. I’ve learned how to minimize them as much as possible but in the beginning I found myself in hos-pital in Antigonish, Nova Scotia because of infected blisters that had me off my feet for two days. My legs have gotten used to the mileage but I had hamstring and calf issues in the beginning that I had to see physiolo-gists for along the way.”

During one brutal heat wave he was drinking over 10 litres of fluid a day.”

But despite the grind, Riley says it’s all worth it to raise money and awareness for prostate cancer. His charity is called Step into Action and his goal is to raise $1 mil-lion during his run.

“I’m doing this because I’m tired of pros-tate cancer having such a large impact in my life and I want to raise prostate cancer awareness so that men know when they

should be getting checked and so that they don’t fear the digital rectal exam because it’s not a big deal at all.

“My grandfather died of prostate cancer, my father currently has prostate cancer, a number of close family friends have pros-tate cancer, and odds are either myself or my brother will get prostate cancer. I hate prostate cancer and this is my way of going to war against it.”

His heart was and is in the right place, but when Riley’s father Rod first heard of what his son wanted to do, it was a shock.

“It was the sheer enormity of it,” says Rod. “He was in the worst shape of his life. He was three-and-a-half years into his medical residency living in Winnipeg. In winter you don’t get the chance to go out and train.”

Riley may have been in the worst shape of his life when he started his run this past May, but his family knew that no matter what the circumstances were, if Riley said he was going to run across the country, that was exactly what he was going to do.

“When he sets his mind to a goal, I’m confident he will achieve it,” says his proud father, who raised his family on the North Shore, a place he still calls home.

“When I first heard about it, I thought he was nuts. It’s an ambitious thing to do. Of course you worry,” sister Lauren chimes in.

Riley and his brother Derek are no strangers to tackling Canada from east to west. Almost 10 years ago, separately, they both rode their bikes across the country for

and running across Canada was something floating around, he would always consider it,” says Derek.

In order to stay sane, Riley listens to audio books and plays mind games to trick his head into thinking there is less mileage than in reality. He’s also got a crew includ-ing friend Michael Downie and David Bell to help him keep in touch with others,

The Chilliwack Hospice Society is adding its voice to World Hospice Day, Saturday Oct. 8., with Voices for Hospice at Decades Coffee Club on Wellington Avenue.

The event is part of a worldwide movement to increase community interest and knowledge about hos-pice and palliative care and will also serve as a local fundraiser.

spread the word on prostate caner and make sure he can achieve what he has set out to do.

“Raising awareness is just as important because if you can detect prostate cancer early in stage one, there is over a 90 per cent cure rate,” Riley says.

Vancouver Prostate Centre’s clinician-scientist and urologic surgeon Dr. Martin Gleave applauds Riley’s quest.

“I think it’s a great illustration of the length of which people will go to get a message out to raise awareness. I think that in general the awareness of cancers, particularly in prostate, has increased.”

Gleave and Riley both admit that advocates of breast cancer awareness have done a phenomenal job in delivering early detection and prevention messages to the public. And it’s Riley’s mission to make prostate cancer an issue on the forefront of men’s minds.

“If I could get prostate cancer the same sort of recognition that breast cancer has among females then maybe I could feel like I’ve done enough to raise awareness but we are a long way away from that point,” Riley says.

Riley’s journey will end in Vancouver around mid-October. He passed through Chilliwack on Monday and is currently outside Abbotsford.

After the run, Riley intends to head back to Winnipeg to finish his residency in anesthesia. He plans to return to the North Shore to practice.

Where some peo-ple tend to focus on weaknesses, Dr. Chris Bertram prefers to focus on strengths. The University of the Fraser Valley kinesiolo-gist has been working with a research team for five years, trying to find ways to help chil-dren with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder live up their full potential.

Bertram, this year’s winner of the Teaching Excellence award at UFV, will give a public lecture entitled Finding Strengths, Building Hope on Thursday, October 6, as part of the University Lecture Series. The talk will be held at 4 p.m. in Room B121 of the UFV Abbotsford campus. Admission is free and the public is welcome.

The talk will focus on two programs for chil-dren with FASD, the FAST Club and Brain Gamers, run by the uni-versity.

Playing in a gym after school or hanging around playing video games may sound like fun, but they are also the key part of the UFV research project.

UFV has been run-ning FAST Club, an after-school motor-skills program for children

with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, for the past three years. New this year is an after-school video game program. Both projects have a mission of help-ing children tap into their inner strengths with regards to their motor skills and gaming skills, and investigating whether the impacts of these activities cross over into other areas. Both programs are offered free of charge for children with a diag-nosis of FASD.

“A typical approach to treating children with FASD involves focusing on their weaknesses. We do assessments and target their best areas and give them choices about what skills they want to improve upon,” says Bertram, who is UFV Kinesiology pro-gram head and one of the project research-ers. “We want to iden-tify existing strengths in children with FASD, and to develop these strengths to the fullest capacity of the individ-ual. We have seen posi-tive changes in other brain functions after par-ticipating in our FAST club. The jury is still out on why this is, but what’s important to the families participating is

that these changes are happening.”

The UFV project is a part of nation-wide multidisciplinary col-laboration that was recently funded by two separate Network Centres of Excellence — NeuroDevNet and GRAND. An overview of the projects will be discussed along with some preliminary data that suggest that target-ed approaches to inter-

vention based on an individual’s strengths can lead to neuroplas-tic changes in children with FASD.

Many UFV students are gaining research experience working on this project.

The University Lecture Series events are free and open to the public, and presented by the UFV Research Services office.

Caring for a person with dementia from a long distance presents many challenges for Chilliwack residents.

“It is important to develop a plan of action,” says Jillian Armit, the Alzheimer Society of

B.C.’s regional support and education coordina-tor.

Caregivers should take some basic steps before visiting the per-son with dementia, she says, to create a plan that best meets their

loved one’s needs.“Talk to family mem-

bers, friends, neigh-bours, their physician, health agencies and other people who are in contact with the per-son,” says Armit.

The Society’s hand-out, Assessing the Needs of the Person with Dementia, is an easy guide and is avail-able online at www.alzheimerbc.org

Caregivers should identify local services needed and make appointments with ser-vice providers.

“Communicate clear-ly what you are hop-ing to achieve. Be pre-pared with questions you would like to have answered, and the ser-vices you are seeking.“

If possible, send an e-mail prior to the appointment.

Armit says caregiv-ers should divide the responsibilities of care with other family mem-bers, whenever possi-ble. Then communicate regularly with all indi-viduals who are help-

ing with the person with dementia’s care.

More suggestions and information on long-distance caregiv-ing are available to Chilliwack residents at the free meetings of the Society’s two local sup-port groups.

The support group serves as a place to exchange information, support and friendship with others whose lives are affected by demen-tia.

tomorrow night, it’s time for the community-wide fire drill.

Reviewing a fire escape plan is one activity residents can do together during the Community Fire Drill on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 6:30 p.m.

Other options include testing all the fire alarms, practising an escape plan as a family or house-hold and gathering at a pre-deter-mined meeting place once every-one is out of the house.

The event is part of Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 9 to 15.

Fire officials also advise that people study at least two ways to get out of every room, if pos-sible. For more information about the Community Fire Drill or to get help with your escape plan, contact the Chilliwack Fire Department at 604-792-8713.

Chiefs outgun Silverbacks in wild BCHL clashEric Welsh,The Progress

Two games into the regular season, the Chilliwack Chiefs are looking like an offen-sive powerhouse remi-niscent of the 1985 Edmonton Oilers. The home team scored six Saturday night in a 6-4 win over the visiting Salmon Arm Silverbacks, improving to 2-0.

On the heels of a 7-1 win over Penticton last weekend, the Chiefs are averaging almost a touchdown per game.

They have some defensive issues to clean up, but this team bears little r e s e m b l a n c e to the Quesnel M i l l i o n a i r e squad that was an Interior con-ference pushover last year.

The Mills scored a whopping 140 goals in 60 games, and while much of that Quesnel roster was lost in the transfer to Chilliwack, few expect-ed these Chiefs to score as they are currently scoring.

“If we keep our ener-gy up and keep our level of execution, and we play it simple and get pucks deep, we’ll con-tinue to see good things happen,” said veteran forward Kit Sitterley of the offensive explosion. “We have that blue col-lar work ethic and we like to get pucks on net and see what happens.”

Salmon Arm’s lethal power play took 84 sec-onds to open the scor-ing in this one, with Saskatchewan native Bryce Gervais pulling the trigger. Morgan Zulinick started the play on the left-wing boards, passing the puck to

Brett Knowles below the left faceoff dot. Knowles went cross-ice to Gervais, and Chilliwack goaltender Bryton Udy couldn’t get post-to-post fast enough to keep Gervais from netting his first of the season.

Sadly for the Silverbacks, that was the high point of their night.

Chilliwack answered at 6:02 on a goal by Shay Laurent. The Chiefs controlled play for the duration of a two min-ute Matt Brown tripping minor, and scored two

seconds after the penalty elapsed. With a mob gath-ered in front of the Salmon Arm net, Chilliwack captain Ty Miller wristed a hope-for -a - r ebound shot towards the goal.

Laurent snuck down from the

left point, grabbed the loose puck as it squirt-ed out of the crowd and potted his first of the year.

Trevor Hills gave Chilliwack the lead with 6:48 remaining in period one, scoring on a short-handed breakaway.

The New York native forced a turnover at the Chiefs blueline and was off like a shot. With a Silverback defender in hot pursuit, Hills’ first shot was stopped, but the rebound went off his skate and into the net. Salmon Arm netminder Kurt Williams was livid, but the officials deemed it unintentional and a good goal.

Hills second of the season gave Chilliwack a 2-1 lead through 20 minutes.

The goals came quick in period two as the Chiefs broke a close game wide open with

three strikes in two min-utes and five seconds.

S i x t e e n - y e a r - o l d rookie Garrett Forster got the first at 6:09, chipping a rebound past Williams after defence-man Mike Berry took the puck hard to the net.

Sitterley scored on a power play at 7:42 and Gould finished off a three-on-one feed from Stefan Gonzales at 8:14.

“We don’t have a first or second line really, or one or two guys doing the job,” Sitterley said of the top-to-bottom scor-ing balance. “We like to play with four lines, and it’s all 21 guys doing the job.”

Penalty woes helped the Silverbacks come

roaring back in the final minutes of period two. Laurent picked up two minutes for instigating at 17:29 after pummel-ing Salmon Arm’s Jeff Kennedy, and Spencer Graboski got two min-utes for kneeing at 18:43 to put Chilliwack two men down.

The Silverbacks took 17 seconds to cash in on a goal by Knowles, who roofed a wrist shot from 10 feet out.

Gervais sniped his second of the game 25 seconds later to make it 5-3 heading to the third.

“Chiefs hockey is a little nitty gritty, but I certainly think we can do a better job stay-ing out of the penalty

box,” Sitterley said. “On the power play goals, bounces go your way or they don’t, and when they don’t you just have to keep your head up and move on.”

Shots on goal through 40 minutes favoured Chilliwack 23-21.

The Silverbacks got within one late in period three on yet another power play goal. With David Thompson serving a weak two-minute tripping minor, Silverback blueliner Klay Kachur uncorked a point shot that hit the end boards and bounced out the other side. Zulinick collected the puck and slid a sharp-angle backhander past Udy for his third of

the year.But the Chiefs had

the last laugh with 5:14 left as Sitterley blasted a slap-shot past Williams, restoring the two-goal lead with his second of the game.

“It felt good and it was certainly a monkey off the back for me,” Sitterley said with a smile. “I could really feel the energy in the building when the puck went in.”

The three stars were Jeremy Gossard (first), Sitterley (second) and Gervais (third).

Announced atten-dance was 2,059.

The Chiefs are on the road next weekend, tak-ing on two tough oppo-nents in the Vernon

Vipers (Friday) and the Westside Warriors (Saturday).

Between them, they sport a record of 4-1-0 and figure to be among the top dogs in the com-petitive Interior confer-ence.

The coming week-end could be a reality check for the Chiefs, or it could be another chance to let the rest of the league know they are for real.

“It’s definitely a chal-lenge,” Sitterley said. “Playing teams like that is exciting for us.”

Chilliwack’s next home game is Friday, Oct. 14 when they wel-come the Vipers to Prospera Centre.

University of the Fraser Valley men’s golf team finished fifth at the latest PACWest tour-nament, hosted by Camosun College in Victoria.

The Cascades turned in an overall score of 609, led by

Mission’s Mitch Lock, who shot a two day total of 149 to tie for seventh overall.

Pauls tied for 12th with a two day score of 151 and he and Lock were the only two Cascades to finish in the Top 12.

Scott Benstead shot a 153 to tie for 13th. Dan MacArthur (Aldergrove) tied for 20th with a 161 and Darren Whitehouse (Langley) tied for 21st with a 162.

UFV’s overall record places them third in PACWest play

with a team score of 1,772. They trail first place Capilano University by seven strokes heading into the final regu-lar season tournament, tak-ing place this weekend at the Chilliwack Golf and Country Club.

Tough tournament for Cascade golfers

The Chilliwack Huskers put three touch-downs on the board, but surrendered a whole lot more in a 48-21 loss to the Okanagan Sun on Saturday.

Playing an afternoon game at Exhibition Stadium, the home team saw its B.C. Football Conference record slip to 0-9 with just one game remaining in the 2011 season.

If the Huskers don’t win a road game in Kamloops this week-end, they’ll have gone two full seasons without a win.

The Huskers stayed close to the Sun (8-1) through 15 minutes, trading touchdowns with the second ranked team in the BCFC.

The Sun started to pull away in the second quarter, building up a 27-14 halftime lead.

The visitors led 34-21 through three quarters before hitting cruise control in the fourth.

Adann Hendrickson went the distance at quarterback for the Huskers, going 17 of 40 passing for 185 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Chilliwack native Cody Parray had the touchdown grab, the only points the offence produced while gener-ating 185 total yards.

The ground game continued to sputter. Hendrickson scrambled for 94 yards on seven carries. Beyond him, running backs Misha Otanga and Mohammed Ellahib combined for seven yards on eight carries.

The other Chilliwack majors came from the defence. Rookie corner-back Tanner Hamade continued his outstand-ing season, taking two interceptions back for TDs. The Abbotsford native is a strong candi-date for BCFC rookie of the year.

Despite Hamade’s best efforts, Kelowna still managed to gener-ate 550 total yards of offence.

Quarterback Jeremy Mraovic completed 14 of 28 passes for 304 yards, throwing touch-down tosses to Tommy

Howes, Dan Turek and Arman Bokitch.

Bokitch led the Sun ground game with 18 carries for 132 yards and two majors.

Evan Polack carried eight times for 44 yards and one touchdown. Sun kicker Steven McFadyen added two field goals with a long of 34 yards.

The Huskers are in Kamloops Saturday to face the Broncos (1-8). It is the second meeting of the season between the two clubs.

Kamloops took the first matchup, winning 37-14 in Chilliwack in week two.

Chilliwack’s Voodoo Derby Dollz Roller Derby Association is hosting a fundraising event for Team Canada

at their home-base, the Landing Sports Center in Chilliwack, on Sunday, Nov. 20.

Roller Derby is cel-

ebrated all around the world, and this year sev-eral nations will head to Toronto Dec. 1-4 for the Blood and Thunder

World Cup. Team Canada’s

20 woman roster will include three British Columbians; 8Mean Wheeler and Luludemon from Vancouver’s Terminal City Roller Girls and Beretta Lynch from the Kootenay Kannibelles.

The Voodoo Dollz, will host all Team Canada skaters in a ‘Scrimmathon.’

They will play roller derby non-stop from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. and one of Team Canada’s coaches, Mack the Mouth, will be on site answering questions about the sport.

The Derby Dollz are inviting other teams to participate at a cost of $20 per skater. All proceeds go directly to Team Canada.

Spectators are wel-come at a cost of $10 per ticket.

Trans Canada Basketball is holding U-13 boys tryouts for top level players who wish to play competitive hoops over the winter months.

There will be three tryouts, and players must attend all three to be considered for the final roster of 8 to 10 players.

The first is Oct. 12 from 7 to 9 p.m.

The second is Oct. 14 from 6 to 8 p.m. and the third is Oct. 17 from 7 to 9 p.m.

All tryouts will be held at Mt. Slesse mid-dle school under the supervision of coach-es Greg and Lisa De Vries.

The team will com-pete in the Langley Metro League from Nov. 6 through Mar. 4. In-season practices will be held at Mt. Slesse. The cost to participate for chosen players will be $500.

He will be sad-ly missed by sisters Karen and Mariane, brother Jens (Ingrid) and numerous nieces and nephews in Denmark. Hans will also be lovingly remem-bered by sister in-law Barbara, Nephew Harald (Sherry), niece Ellen (Russ) and their families in Canada. A special thank you to his friend Ras-mina and the staff at Eden Care Centre, where Hans spent his last few months. No service by request.

great sadness, yet great re-joicing, that we announce the passing of Mary Stobbe on September 27, 2011 at 91 years of age. Mary had her wish granted that she would die in her sleep and go to meet her Lord Jesus. She was born on May 16, 1920 in Sa-gradowka, Russia to Peter and Helena Dueck, the youngest of 8 children.

She leaves to mourn her lov-ing husband, Jake, of 65 years; children Bob (Lynda), Jim (Carol), Ed (Rita) Irene (Vic) Abrahams, Shirley (Lorne) Re-dekop, and Al (Kora Lee); 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grand-children (plus 1 on the way); and many nieces, nephews and friends.

We would like to express our thanks to all those who helped care for Mom during her last days. We are thankful that it was a short illness and that she did not suffer much.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 5 from 7:30 - 9:00 p.m. at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 2310 Clearbrook Rd, Abbotsford. A memorial service will be held on Thurs-day, October 6 at 3:00 p.m. at Bakerview MB Church, 2285 Clearbrook Rd, Abbotsford.

Dec. 2, 1928 - Sept. 6, 2011Cy passed away peace-

fully Tuesday September 6, 2011 at the age of 82 years. Cy is survived by his loving sons Allen (Melissa) and Stephen (Jannine); brothers, Gordon, Harold, Leslie, Arthur, Victor and one sister Eileen. Cy also leaves to mourn fi ve grand-children. Cy cherished his mu-sic and playing in the Campa Band as well as his passion for drafting.

Cyril arrived in Canada early during WWII, accompa-nied by his sister Eileen and brother Gordon. They lived with the Larsen family until the war was over.

Eileen and Gordon returned to England and Cyril remained to fi nish high school. He then worked for the bank of Com-merce for several years.

The Webber children fi t in beautifully with the Larsen family and became brothers and sister to Bill. Cyril and Bill both played the saxophone and for a few years with Niel Unra’s Dance band.

I have so many fond mem-ories of our times together that will never be forgotten.

A celebration of life was held in Gordon’s residence in Campbell River.

It is with great sadness that we an-nounce the death of Jack Thomas Whit-ing on Septem-ber 28th, 2011 in Chilliwack, BC. He was born in Vancouver on April 17th, 1956, pre-deceased by his parents Elsie and Frank Whiting.

Jack spent his childhood years in Vancouver and New Westminster and started his carpentry/lathing career in Fort McMurray & Edmonton, Alberta. After work on the oilsands projects and West Edmonton Mall he was happy to return to BC to work on the high rises in Vancouver and in Kelowna and the lower main-land.

Jack enjoyed the adven-ture of being outside with nature and walking with God. Several years ago, he and his daughter, Alicia loved caring for his grandmother in Camp-bell River. He will always be remembered by his sense of humor and his love and car-ing for family and friends. But, somehow, depression took over and he took his life.

He is survived by his daughter, Alicia; grand-daugh-ter, Carrie Rose; common-law wife, Wendy; sisters, Belle and Brenda; brothers, Reg and Bill and many friends.

Celebration of Life at 2:00pm Saturday, October 8, 2011 at the Northside Four-square Church, 1460 Lans-down Drive, Coquitlam, BC.

Most of us have heard the term heat pump and savings in the same phrase.

You probably wonder what a heat pump is and how it can save money. Here is a brief explanation.

A heat pump is an air conditioner that works year round. In the summer, a heat pump uses the process of refrigeration to remove heat from your house.

If you can imagine, there is a temperature of 30 degrees Celsius in your house and 30 degrees outside, it is uncomfortable, you turn on the air con-ditioner and you feel cool air from your registers. This process is moving heat from the inside of your house and transferring it to the outside where it is blown away. Before too long, your house is cool and comfortable. This is the same process as your refrigerator uses in your home. When your fridge gets too warm inside, the fridge turns on and brings the temperature in the fridge down to a safe level for your food to last. What a great process!

The heat from your fridge is actually being transferred to the room. If you feel the air rising off the back of the fridge, when it is running, it is warm, this is the heat removed from the inside of the fridge being moved to the room.

The process for a heat pump is the same as your fridge.You have the heat from the outside being transferred to the inside of the

house. How can this be? Refer to your freezer. Your freezer works again on

the same process as your fridge except in more extreme conditions. Your fridge keeps food cool, your freezer freezes food. When your fridge is cold, your freezer is colder. The heat difference just means there is heat there (in your fridge) and less in your freezer. So if wecan harness the power of refrigeration to move heat from the cold outside in the winter and move it into the house, you have just created a fridge that becomes a freezer and the heat difference is transferred in to the house.

A heat pump moves heat at a minimum of 200 per cent effi ciency in the Lower Mainland so for every dollar you would spend on heating on electricity, you get at least $2 of heat. The average in our climate is $2.40 of heat per dollar spent. You are spending the money transferring heat in-stead of burning your money creating it! In the Lower Mainland, we have a mild enough climate that we can use heat pumps to heat our houses year round at a reasonable cost and save money. This includes savings over burning natural gas to heat our homes.

There are incentives available now to reduce your energy usage and greenhouse gas emissions for your home, these can range up to $4190 back on your retrofi t to a high effi ciency furnace and heat pump.
