Last year was packed with a lot of memorable photo-graphs. I’m not necessar-ily speaking about big news events, but moreso portraits

that made me smile, moments that warmed my heart, and events that made me wonder how they even happened (see flipped van, above).

My job is to create an image that tells the entire story in one photo. This can be easy when I’m faced with something like a man driving a Second World

War tank down Main Street (below), but it can also be difficult.

Take portraits, for example. From artists to politicians, and

athletes to entrepreneurs, I pretty much cover it all. What makes a great portrait, in my opinion, is a combination of

April 28 • Dan Langelaan, a parks worker for the City of Chilliwack, observes one of nine young ducklings that got stuck in a pipe at the Landing Leisure Centre. A mother duck was swimming in a pond outside the Leisure Centre with her 10 ducklings, when nine of her babies got sucked into a pipe leading to the sewer. Members from the centre, as well as city workers and SPCA employees spent about two hours rescuing the little feathered friends which were only about one- or two-weeks old. Eventually, they were all scooped up and returned to their mother. Why not

Images of 2011Shooting portraits can be difficultclean backgrounds, beautiful light, composi-tion and the subject’s expression.

But sometimes mak-ing a great portrait can be challenging.

In October, I pho-tographed local artist Kelli Mitchell who sang

at Gene Simmons wed-ding. I met her at the Anavets building on Yale Road. I wasn’t fond of the interior which featured an open dining area of plain tables and chairs and very little natural light, so we went outside and looked for a nicer backdrop.

The outside wasn’t

great either — a busy street, garbage cans, telephone poles and some empty storefronts didn’t look appealing, so we kept looking. Tucked away between the outdoor smoking section of the Anavets and a laundromat, was a bright blue brick wall.

That was it.

Using one flash, posi-tioned to capture Kelli’s shadow at an angle, and her natural humour, I made a lovely portrait of her (see page 11).

Another memorable, but also emotionally dif-ficult, assignment was photographing Terry Fox’s father, Rolly Fox, not long after wife, Betty, passed away.

We were doing a story leading up to the annual Terry Fox Run and I was to get a por-trait of Rolly. When I arrived, we talked for a while about Betty. He told me that since she died, rarely is he at home. He doesn’t like to be alone.

The house hadn’t changed at all since the last time I was there. Betty’s coloured-glass collectables sat along-side Rolly’s train collec-tion which were placed throughout the house beside photos of Terry.

I asked him to sit on the couch. A coffee table stood in front of him with some of Betty’s glass treasures on top. He held a framed pic-ture of Betty hugging Terry, and said “I don’t want to smile.”

“That’s fine,” I said. “You don’t have to.”

I photographed him exactly how I saw him that day — sad and lonely, missing both his wife and son.

Two photos that I was told got some people talking (both on page 7) were my shot of illusion-ist Ted Outerbridge and my photo of Soprema employees at the Chilliwack Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards.

Despite the number of people who have asked me about the

portrait of illusionist Ted Outerbridge and wife Marion, who is floating in mid-air in the photo, I can’t tell you the goings on behind that image.

I can, on the other hand, tell you a bit more about the shot from the Chamber of Commerce’s ‘Rocky Horror Awards Show’.

Pictured in a corset, high-heeled boots, and stockings with a garter belt, is local actor Dayton Pagliericci who, during the awards entertain-ment that night, played Dr. Frank N. Furter, the main character from the 1975 musical The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The movie fea-tures a lost couple who are swept into the world of said doctor, who is a self-proclaimed “sweet transvestite”. Pagliericci was one of many scant-ily clad actors who

escorted the winners off the stage to be pho-tographed along with the award sponsors.

We did get at least one reader who did not approve of the image.

But regardless of whether some of my images may offend some people, I still have to do my job of pho-tographing things as I see them, or as the public sees them, and tell stories through my images.

And if a photo of a man in high heels and hot pants leading peo-ple off stage, arm-in-arm, best describes that event, then I’ve done my job.

Jenna Hauck is an award-winning photojournalist at The Chilliwack Progress. She has been working at the Progress since February of 2000.

FASTViola Marilyn

nee FunkSept. 5, 1940 – Dec. 24, 2011

Viola Fast passed away at home on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2011, with her family at her side. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 52 years, Ar-nold Fast, and their children, Arnie (Kelly), Carla de Vries (Chris), Charles (Candace), and 8 grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, Henry and Agnes Funk.

Viola was born in the Steinbach Hospital and lived her early years in Grunthal, Manitoba. She was the 2nd eldest child of Henry & Agnes Funk; a loving sister to Harold Funk, Evelyn Neufeld, Hank Funk & Deborah Magnus. At the age of 9, Viola moved with her family to Clearbrook, BC. The Funk family attended the West Abbotsford Church where Viola was baptized in the summer of 1957. As a teenager, Viola was thrilled to obtain employment with the BC Tel Co. where she worked as a telephone operator for 2 years prior to marrying the love of her life, Arnold, on September 11, 1959.

Vi & Arnold lived in Sardis for a short time and then settled on Yale Road in Chilli-wack where they farmed until their retirement in 1994. Viola was an extremely effi cient and hard worker. She helped on the farm when needed, main-tained an immaculate home & yard, and often worked out-side of the home. She spent many years working in retail; being employed at Love Story, Graham’s Gifts & Décor West, all provided her with the op-portunity to work with some of the things she loved such as cards, fi gurines & china. Viola had a passion for plan-ning, and for parties, and ev-ery event she orchestrated , whether it was a baby shower, a dinner party or “faspa” for her family, she insured that the presentation was perfect and orderly. No detail was forgotten.

Viola loved to travel, her favourite destinations being Hawaii and Palm Springs. She was incredibly gifted with artistic abilities. Knitting, de-signing and sewing her own clothes was soon followed by needlepoint, ceramics, stuffed bears & rabbit dolls to name a few. Making porcelain dolls was her last artistic venture. She was an active participant in her church, working many years with the Pioneer Girls

program at Eden Mennonnite, and then at the Chilliwack Al-liance where she helped with special events & ladies pro-grams.

Viola was a loving wife, mother & grandmother. She was very supportive of her grand-children’s activities and many of the grand-chil-dren’s friends adopted her as their “Granny”, too. She was a dedicated care-giver to her parents & other family members in need. She was a strong advocate of prayer and remained faithful in this until the end. In spite of her dete-riorating health, her fi nal year was fi lled with many wonder-ful times that have left spe-cial memories for her family. The family is grateful for the support they received, espe-cially to the home-care health system which enabled her to spend her last days in the comfort of her home.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012, at the Chilliwack Alliance Church, 8700 Young Road, Chilliwack, at 2:00 pm. In lieu of fl owers, dona-tions may be made in Viola’s memory to the charity of one’s choice.

SMITHStephanie

LouiseS t e p h a n i e

Louise Smith completed her life’s journey on December 23, 2011 in her 62nd year. She passed away at Vancouver General Hospital after bravely striving against a profound illness.

Stephanie was born and raised in Adelaide, South Aus-tralia, Australia. She trained and worked as a Dental Ther-apist and her patients loved her gentle touch.

In 1979, following a vaca-tion to the U.S.A., she made a brief stop-over in Hawaii where she met the love of her life, Richard Norman Smith, who also happened to be va-cationing there. This seren-dipitous meeting resulted in a beautiful thirty-three year relationship. Stephanie left the hot beaches of Adelaide that she loved for the cold cli-mates of Revelstoke, Rick and Stephanie’s home for eighteen years. Thirteen years ago they moved to Chilliwack. Stepha-nie was an intelligent woman with a quick wit. Practical and wise, she was a voracious reader and an avid gardener. Stephanie loved animals and volunteered with several ani-mal rescue groups.

Stephanie is survived by her loving husband, Rick, and her parents Yvonne and Den-nis Gray, her brother, Michael Gray and sisters, Lisa Gray and Shauna (Bruce) Wynne, nieces Sera Gray, and Reneé and Jessie Robinson in Aus-tralia.

Special thanks to the staff at Chilliwack General Hospi-tal and the teams at Vancou-ver General Hospital Inten-sive Care Unit. A celebration of her life will be held at Rick and Stephanie’s home at 7332 Marble Hill Road, Chilliwack, on Saturday, January 14th be-tween 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. In lieu of fl owers, donations may be made to an animal rescue shelter of your choice.
