TCTP has had another terrific program year! We worked with almost 900 kids in eleven TUSD schools, and our volunteers contributed in excess of 1,500 hours. Additionally, because of your continued financial support, TCTP finished the 2015-2016 program year with a balanced budget. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE!

I am taking this opportunity to let you know that after 8 ½ years, I am resigning my position as TCTP President and Board of Directors member effective December 1.

TCTP’s mission has been built on Bud Menkin’s vision, along with help from Brit Feldhausen, Dolores Davenport, and many others. Our organizational goal has always been to bring tennis to the community, especially to areas where young people normally weren’t exposed to tennis. When TCTP began, I was a teacher and tennis coach in the area of town that the group was targeting. Thus I was very aware of TCTP’s great work on Tucson’s south side. Pueblo Gardens students getting autographs

Last spring was a time to remember for our TCTP students and their families. Students were treated to two separate trips to see our own University of Arizona Men’s Tennis team up close and in action.

In February, 42 students from Pueblo Gardens Elementary School traveled to LaNelle Robson Tennis Center where they

played tennis with the University of Arizona Men’s tennis team. Then head coach Tad Berkowitz said it’s a favorite day for both him and the men’s players.

Not only did our students learn tennis from and play a bit with members of the team, but they were also taken on a tour of the U of A campus by TCTP volunteer and former Wildcat Gavin Stuart. This is such a unique experience for our students, and we appreciate the men’s tennis team taking the time each year to provide it for them.

In March, fifty children who participate in our Saturday tennis program and their parents, had a chance to see the game of tennis played at the highest level. The USTA’s donation helped enable us to fund the bus to Ventana where our families were transformed into enthusiastic men’s tennis Wildcat fans who

cheered “their” team on against the Fresno Bulldogs!

At Ventana, the children and their families were able to see firsthand the enthusiasm and excitement of the Men’s Wildcat Tennis team.  For Juan and Gabian, two of our older students who had just played their first high school match that week, it was a chance

to see how the great players handle their emotions when the pressure’s on.

 Thank you to the USTA and you, our donors, for your support of our program.

You have provided these families the opportunity to develop a deep connection to the University of Arizona and the game of tennis.

On October 1, 2015, the Bryan Brothers, who hold 16 Grand Slam titles, played an exhibition match against the Jensen Brothers, the 1993 French Open champs. The match was hosted by La Paloma as part of the Steven M. Gootter Foundation Fundraiser.

TCTP was fortunate enough to receive 15 tickets to this special event. Because of this, eight TCTP players and their parents attended this great evening of tennis

Rich Wheeler July 4th Memorial TournamentIt was a record-breaking summer

for heat, but that didn’t stop over 30 doubles teams from coming out to TRC to pay tribute to Rich Wheeler and to help support TCTP. Players enjoyed three rounds of doubles and ended the morning by cooling off, mingling, and remembering Rich in the restaurant upstairs. Your generous donations in Rich’s memory totaled $1,012, a lovely tribute to Rich. Special thanks to Anne Graham, Bill Wallin, Laura Pendelton-Miller, and Val Smith for organizing this fun and meaningful event.

The key to getting more children on the court has proven to be a series of steps on a path which TCTP fulfills within our three programs. • Step 1 (In-School Program) - Expose young children to tennis

in a school setting; • Step 2 (Saturday and Summer Camp Programs) – Offer

opportunities within the children’s community that includes consistent quality coaching for them to play and develop their skills;

• Step 3 (SPTA and SAZ Scholarship Programs) – Send advanced players to tennis clinics that allow them to play and receive coaching with other young players;

• Step 4 – Encourage them to play on their high school teams and/or in local tournaments.

You are Supporting TCTP’s Pathway to Becoming a Tennis Player

Team 111 Supports Our KidsOnce again, Team 111 helped so many of our students continue to expand their knowledge and love of tennis. The cycling team, started by former students of the Smith-Perry Tennis Academy, rode in El Tour de Tucson last November and raised money to help pay for some of our students to attend the very same tennis camp that they participated in as youth. Because of the $2,100 raised, and thanks to a generous matching contribution from the Knisely Foundation, twelve students were able to attend a total of 34 weeks of camp.

How do our students feel about this experience? Participant Gabian says it best: “Thank you, Team 111, for the opportunity to participate in the Smith-Perry Tennis Academy. I want to thank you all for helping me work on my slices, backhands, and forehands. Thank you for putting your time in for me and helping me learn new things.” Thank you, Team 111, for all you do for our students.

Last November, 35 teams came out to play doubles, eat BBQ, and participate in a silent auction fundraiser at Tucson Racquet Club. Fifty items, such as jewelry, gift baskets, and tennis lessons, were sold. A unique twist in the form of “tennigans” was added to the tournament. A tennigan could be purchased and used during a match as a “do over,” something players took great pleasure in using to foil their opponents at crucial points. A fun afternoon was had by all, and we were able to raise just over $6,200. Thank you to everyone who came out to enjoy a beautiful day of tennis and friends.

“I learned that sportsmanship was more important than competing.”

“You guys are the most fun coaches in the whole world and I just want to be the best student.”

“The more I play tennis, the better I get. When I get it wrong, I try again and I get better. You help my tennis with all the things that you teach me.”

“I want to thank TCTP and Coach Susan for everything they have done for my grandson, Antonio. Antonio has changed a lot since he began playing tennis. He is much different now. He is more patient,

follows directions better, and is not as restless. His tennis has improved so much. What is great is his improvement in school. He is reading more and participating in school.

Since he played tennis he has grown up a lot and learned a lot. Tennis has helped him be a better listener, follow instructions, and be a good team player. His mom and I want to say thank you for all that you have done for Antonio.

He has grown to be a better person because of everything you have done for him.”

On September 10, volunteers and coaches gathered for this year’s TCTP Training Workshop at TRC. Jessica Curley led the group by examining and executing the in-school and graduation lesson plans. We had both old and new volunteers participating this year who were markedly inquisitive, super enthusiastic, and mischievously playful. Everyone had a wonderful time and remarked on what a fabulous way to begin the 2016-2017 TCTP program year!!! We are thrilled to have such an accomplished and talented group of volunteers.
