Tucson Chapter Volume 14, Number 2 www.TucsonBNC.org February 2015 Daniel James Brown is the author of The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, which spent a year on the New York Times Best Sellers list follow- ing its publication in June 2013 and currently is near the top of its softcover list. The book was named Best Nonfiction Book of the Year for 2014 by the American Booksellers Association and took first place in the Washington State Awards for General Nonfiction. The novelist grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and attended the University of California at Berkeley. He taught writing at San Jose State University and Stanford before becoming a technical writer and editor, first in Silicon Valley and later at Microsoft. He now writes narrative nonfiction books full time. He states his primary interest as a writer is in bringing compel- ling historical events to life as vividly and accurately as he can. His two previous titles were The Indifferent Stars Above: The Harrowing Saga of a Donner Party Bride and Under a Flaming Sky: The Great Hinckley Firestorm of 1894. In speaking about the latter book, Booklist’s starred review called it “Riveting, moving, white- knuckle reading to rank with classic accounts of the ‘perfect storm,’ Krakatoa, and other storied calamities.” Daniel Brown lives in the country outside of Seattle, Washington, with his wife, two daugh- ters, and an assortment of cats, dogs, chickens, and honeybees. When he is not writing, he is likely to be birding, gardening, fly-fishing, reading American history, or chasing bears away from the beehives. He will be joined by authors Laura Lippman, David Morrell, and Jillian Cantor (see the biographies on page 5). Daniel James Brown is the author of The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, which spent a year on the New York Times Best Sellers list follow-ing its publication in June 2013 and currently is near the top of its softcover list.

He states his primary interest as a writer is in bringing compel-ling historical events to life as vividly and accurately as he can. His

two previous titles were The Indifferent Stars Above: The Harrowing Saga of a Donner Party Bride and Under a Flaming Sky: The Great Hinckley Firestorm of 1894.

In speaking about the latter book, Booklist’s starred review called it “Riveting, moving, white-knuckle reading to rank with classic accounts of the ‘perfect storm,’ Krakatoa, and other storied calamities.”

Daniel Brown lives in the country outside of Seattle, Washington, with his wife, two daugh-ters, and an assortment of cats, dogs, chickens, and honeybees. When he is not writing, he is likely to be birding, gardening, fly-fishing, reading American history, or chasing bears away from the beehives.

He will be joined by authors Laura Lippman, David Morrell, and Jillian Cantor (see the biographies on page 5).

President’s Corner We Wish Our Members…Among the fantastic programs that we

have in our chapter is the Book Depot with books on line and, of course, the annual Book Sale. The funds from these entities all go to a scholarship endowment fund for support of a Tucson-area student who has been accepted by Brandeis University. This year, the book sale will be at the Foothills Mall during the month of February. Please

support this project by either working at the sale or buying books for yourself or loved ones.

Seasons come and go. People pass through our lives. Events help to shape us and mold us into the person we have become. So often, we look at life from the outside in instead of the inside out. We color our moods and our personalities as often as we color our fingers and toes and sometimes our hair. We want to see black and white and not shades of gray or other hues of the color spectrum.

We are so fortunate to live in America where we have so many options. Here in Tucson, you can go to the symphony, the opera, the movies, the theatre, dance, and, of course, out to dinner. What would our lives be like if we were not able to eat out with our friends or have coffee or tea at the local cafe?

We read, do crafts, volunteer, and educate ourselves to our ever-changing surroundings. Time is precious. It passes whether we like it or not. It is not too late to become involved in one of the best non-profits in the country, the Brandeis National Committee (BNC).

Membership is one thing. If you become actively in-volved in our many projects, programs, and Study Groups, your lives will be enriched. Not everything in life needs to be entertaining. Volunteer at our Book Depot. Help with the Book Sale. Collect items for homeless children who live on the streets of Tucson. Bring books for children whose moth-ers are in prison. Attend the luncheons and enjoy catching up with each other’s lives. Most of all attend the Book & Author Events. The authors are outstanding and their books are captivating. Bring your spouse and a friend. Introduce them to what is special about the BNC. Whether or not you are able to attend the events, sell ads for the Ad Book.

This is probably the last year for our campaign, “Sustain-ing the Mind.” Our minds are trapped within our bodies waiting to be nourished and cared for. Many times our bodies outlast our minds. How many untold stories will

never be shared because a mind has been struck by one of many diseases. A child does not speak. A parent does not know us. The world around us spins, but we are caught off balance and cannot express our thoughts. “Sustaining the Mind” supports basic research in neurodegenerative diseases, which have or will affect us, our families, or our friends.

Help us make a difference.Lynn Cramer, President Continued on the bottom of the next column

Book Fund EventOn Monday, February 16, at 10:00 a.m., we will feature our Book Fund event, a discussion of Housekeeping: A Novel,

by Marilynne Robinson, to be held at Villa Hermosa. This was the book read by this year’s incoming freshman class, with a discussion of the book by the author with the frosh present. The event and the following question-and-answer period were filmed, and we have the video to watch and then discuss. Jean Nerenberg has been our leader for this event for many years, and it is fortunate for us that she returns this year after a one-year absence.

The price is both a bargain and a fund-raiser for the libraries at Brandeis University. For purchase of a minimum $10 Book Fund card or journal in the preceding month, you will have the opportunity to attend. Seating is limited, so make your reservation early.

Community Service/ Social Justice

The Tucson chapter gives back to our community.Marilyn Lobell, our Community Service Chairman, re-

minds us of the organizations we are supporting this year:The Emerge! Center Against Domestic Abuse is in need

of hotel toiletries and personal-care items. They also need NEW socks and underwear for children, teens, and women.

Youth On Their Own (YOTO) is an organization that supports high school graduation of homeless youth by providing financial assistance, basic human needs, and guidance. They always need teen hygiene products and school supplies.

Books From Mom is a program that gives new and gently used children’s books to women in prison so they can read to their visiting offspring.

Brandeis is always looking for new ways to help our community. If you have a way to help or wish to make a donation, contact Marilyn Lobell, [email protected] or 615-0877.

Nobody can help everybody, but everybody can help somebody!

You Missed UOW?The University on Wheels (UOW)

on January 8 was spectacular! lf you didn’t hear Melissa Kozinski-Collins speak, you missed hearing one of the top biology teachers at Brandeis University explain to a group of lay-men the details of protein structure, protein aggregation, and how many neurodegenerative disease may be related to abnormalities in protein

three-dimensional formation in a manner that made it clear to our group of laypeople, without talking down to the crowd.

K-C, as her students call her, was an amazing speaker, with vitality, energy, excitement, and a dash of reality. A fascinating question-and-answer period followed her talk.

The UOW program has always had great speakers. Do not miss this event again!

Again this year, Sheila Rothenberg, who finds our wonderful authors, has selected another fascinating group of writers for the March 2015 Book & Author Events on Wednesday evening, March 11, for the Soi-rée, and Thursday, March 12, for the Luncheon. In addition to Daniel James Brown (see page 1), the trio of authors below will make for another exciting B & A experience. If you haven’t done it yet, reserve the dates. You will receive an invitation in the mail shortly.

Jillian Cantor is the author of award-winning novels for teens and adults, including, most prominently, the critically acclaimed Margot: A Novel. The book was a Library Reads pick for September, 2013, and was featured in O the Oprah Magazine, People, Ladies’ Home Journal, and Time, among many others.

Everyone who has read The Diary of Anne Frank knows that Anne and her sister Margot died of typhus in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. However, what if Margot didn’t die? What if she survived and emigrated to America?

Ms Cantor posits this alternative scenario with a modern eye for symptoms of trauma and survivor’s guilt, poignantly examining how Margot must cope when Anne’s diary is published. You will not want to miss hearing the author talk about the fictional life and happy ending she created, one that was so cruelly denied to the real Margot.

Laura Lippman, “one of the best novelists around, period,” according to the Washington Post, while working full-time as a newspaper reporter for 20 years, including 12 at The [Baltimore] Sun, began writing novels and published seven books about “accidental” private detective Tess Monaghan before leaving daily journalism in 2001.

Between her Monaghan books and her New York Times bestselling stand-alone novels, she has been awarded the Edgar, Anthony, Agatha, Shamus, Nero Wolfe, Gumshoe, and Barry Awards and nominated for the Hammett and Macavity, as she has greatly expanded the boundaries of mystery fiction and psychological suspense. Lippman’s latest work, Hush

Hush, will launch February 24, 2015, and will be available for sale and autographing at the March 12 B&A luncheon at Skyline Country Club.

David Morrell was a professor of English at the University of Iowa when he penned First Blood, a ground-breaking novel about a returned Vietnam veteran suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder who comes into conflict with a small-town police chief and fights his own version of the Vietnam War. The book earned Morrell the title of “Father of Modern Action Novels,” made Rambo, the book’s hero, a household name, and led to four box office-hit movies starring Sylvester Stallone.

Morrell continued to teach while simultaneously writing other novels, many of them international bestsellers, including the classic spy trilogy, The Brotherhood of the Rose, The Fraternity of the Stone, and The League of Night and Fog. In 1986, wearying of two professions, Morrell gave up academia in order to write full time. The author of 30 works of fiction and nonfiction, Morrell is an Edgar, Anthony, and Macavity nominee as well as a three-time recipient of the distinguished Bram Stoker Award. International Thriller Writers has honored him with its prestigious career-achievement Thriller Master Award.

Paulina Kuzmin ’17 is the recipient of the Tucson Chapter Endowed Scholarship for a Tucson-area student accepted to Brandeis University, made possible by the time, energy, and earnings of the Book Depot staff working the online book business and the proceeds from the Brandeis Book Sale at the Foothills Mall. Paulina wrote the following to us:

Dear Members of the BNC Tucson Chapter,I would like to sincerely thank you for supporting my

college education via the BNC Tucson Chapter Endowed Scholarship. There are no words for the immense gratitude I have, because this scholarship has given me the opportu-nity to attend an amazing school and pursue my passions.

I was born and raised in Tucson and mostly grew up in a split household. School, when I was young, was a safe place, and a love for learning blossomed from the circum-stances that were around. I attended Catalina Foothills High School, where I had Ms Mandel for an English teacher in the 10th and 12th grades. She was a Brandeis alum and a huge inspiration for the reason why I applied [to Brandeis]. She focused a lot of time talking about social justice and the importance of being aware of the events occurring in society. I traveled alone, for the first time, across country to visit Brandeis my senior year. Though I was scared and bewildered, the Brandeis community made me feel in-stantly at home. I knew that Brandeis would continue my passion for learning.

I am currently studying neuroscience and biology. I hope to attend medical school and specialize in pediat-rics. Brandeis’ science classes have been challenging, but rewarding. I’m amazed every day about the new informa-tion we discuss on campus.

Again, I’m so thankful for this scholarship, because it truly has allowed me to expand my world and change myself in such a diverse environment.

I hope that I will be able to meet all of you in person one day. Take care,

Paulina Kuzmin

“You’ve Gotta Have Art” Study GroupOn Thursday, December 18, the “You’ve Gotta Have Art” Study Group had an excellent lunch at Agustin’s Kitchen

and had a fun time at Ben’s Bells. The group was given a tour and learned about the mission of Ben’s Bells, which is to inspire, educate, and motivate people to realize the impact of intentional kindness and empower individuals to act according to that awareness, thereby strengthening ourselves, our relationships and our communities. The group especially enjoyed making kindness buttons.

College Factual has ranked Brandeis as one of the top 10 schools in which to earn an economics degree in the United States.

Brandeis earned the ninth spot in a national survey con-ducted by College Factual that looked at overall academic quality of economics undergraduate programs. College Factual is an Internet site that uses outcomes-based data to guide students through the college selection process.

The Web-based college information source recognized Brandeis for providing a broad range of courses — includ-ing international economics and finance, macroeconomics, monetary economics, and labor economics — that prepare students to pursue a variety of careers following gradua-tion. It also cited the average early-career and mid-career salaries of its graduates.

Brandeis Economics #9 SpotDuring the last century, the celebration of Hanukkah in

the United States has transformed from a minor festival into one of American Jews’ most widely observed holidays, according to Jonathan Sarna ’75, MA’75, the Joseph H. and Belle R. Braun Professor of American Jewish History at Brandeis and chief historian of the National Museum of American Jewish History.

Hanukkah has moved from being a very minor Jew-ish festival scarcely mentioned in most American Jewish sources to being one of the most popular and widely observed holidays on the American Jewish calendar. The driver behind this was that Christmas became increasingly central in 19th-century America, the day for giving gifts to children, eventually becoming a national holiday. As a result of all that, Hanukkah was infused with a vast new energy in the hope that it might compete with Christmas or at least allow Jewish children to see that they are as fortunate as their Christian neighbors.
