Endowed Fund Activity New funds benefit Canaan Valley Emergency Responders, Davis Medical Center and Preston County

“Kathy was difficult to get to know but it was well worth the effort. She was brilliant, extremely generous,

and really quite a hoot. In addition to serving as President, she enjoyed helping out with the Canaan

Valley Women’s Club pepper jelly fund raiser. She was also active in the CV VFD Auxiliary. Kathy

excelled as the time-keeper for candidate forums co-hosted by both groups and candidates were quick to

discover that she was merciless when it came to sticking to the clock. Kathy took great pleasure in being

an angel tree shopper and she was tenacious about completing the list, no matter how many stores it took

her to.” MJ Rayhart

Two endowments established by the estate of former Canaan Valley resident, Katherine Zabriskie, will provide perpetual funding

for local emergency services. The Katherine Zabriskie Emergency Medical Services Fund is designated for EMS services in

the Canaan Valley area and the Zabriskie Canaan Valley Fire Department Fund provides operational support for the Canaan

Valley Volunteer Fire Department. Zabriskie moved to Tucker County in 2003 after retiring from IBM. She was 69 when she

died in 2010.

A 1925 trust document from the estate of Henry Gassaway Davis established a perpetual fund to

support Davis Memorial Hospital, nka Davis Medical Center. In order to maximize investment returns

and growth, the Davis Health System Foundation board established an endowment through Tucker

Community Foundation. The Davis Family Fund of DHSF will continue to support Davis Medical

Center.

It didn’t take the Preston community long to meet a challenge issued by TCF to establish the

Preston Community Fund to provide a pool of unrestricted funds for scholarships, nonprofits,

projects and programs in Preston County. Fueled by TCF’s $1 for $1 match incentive and another

match offered by an anonymous donor, the fund quickly exceeded the minimum fund requirement

of $10,000. An advisory committee representing Preston County will be appointed in May to

recommend distributions from the fund.

The Tucker County Economic and Community Development (TED) Fund is

building as donors take advantage of TCF’s $1 for $1 match offer. The fund

supports community development activities such as real estate acquisition,

relocation, demolition, rehabilitation of housing and commercial buildings. Funds

can also support construction of public facilities and improvements to water, sewer

and other utilities, as well as street paving, and sidewalks, construction and

maintenance of community centers, and the conversion of school buildings, public

services, and economic development and job creation/retention activities. TED

funds can be used for preservation and restoration of historic properties in

underserved neighborhoods. The fund must reach $10,000 to produce an annual

grant; the fund balance as of March 31 was $6,900.
