OVERVIEWThe Logan Tubular Wireline Jar is a straight-pull actuated jar that has no restricted stroke. The simple and rug-ged Logan Tubular Wireline Jar may be used alone or in combination with the Logan Hydraulic Wireline Jar. This com-bination of tools is particularly useful in permanent well completion operations when the ability to jar both ways is es-sential.

USESThe Logan Tubular Wireline Jar, when used in combination with the Logan Hy-draulic Wireline Jar, is particularly useful in permanent well completion to aid in pulling, fishing, or gas lift operations. Upward jarring with this combination is done in the usual manner with the Logan Hydraulic Wireline Jar.

CONSTRUCTIONThe Logan Tubular Wireline Jar is com-posed of a top sub, link body, mandrel, and a bottom sub with set screw.

The top sub is constructed with wrench flats and a fishing neck. A lock pin secures the mandrel to the top sub and provides safety against loosening and backing off during operation during operation.

The link body is perforated to elimi-nate fluid cushioning and mud packing while in service. The link body bottoms against the bottom sub when it closes on the down stroke.

The mandrel has an integral knocker at its upper end. The knocker strikes the lower end of the link body at the end of an up-stroke to produce impact.

OPERATIONTo provide an effective means to bump up or down, whichever may be required during the operation, a Logan Tubular Wireline Jar may be assembled in the string immediately above the Hydraulic Wireline Jar to provide a convenient way of bumping down. This combina-tion assures the operator of being able to jar up or down if needed during the operation.

It is recommended that several sinker bars with an outside diameter that corresponds to the Jar be assembled above the tool to provide the neces-sary weight for sufficient impact during operation. The weight of the sinker bars will determine the intensity of the jarring blowand also aid in closing the Jar with minimum time delay. The assembled tool is run into and out of the well like any other fishing tool but on measuring line or stranded wireline.

The zero point or depth measuring reference should take the stroke length of the Jar into account. Otherwise, no special precautions or considerations are necessary. The stroke length of each Jar is listed on page 6. The stroke length of a Jar can be checked by mea-suring its length when it is open and closed. The difference between these two measurements is the stroke length.

The Logan Tubular Wireline Jar is actu-ated either manually or by the use of a reel. The Jar is positioned by pulling or reeling. Sudden release or rapid unreel-ing causes the weight of the Jar and sinker bars to close the Jar.

To Jar UpThe tools are assembled and run in the hole in the usual manner and the fish or equipment is engaged. Upward jarring with the Logan Tubular Wireline Jar is done in the same manner as with the Logan Hydraulic Wireline Jar.

With the Jar is in the closed position, an upward strain is placed on the wireline to pull the mandrel upward. The upward jarring blow transmits energy to the tools installed below the Jar. The transmitted jarring force is propor-tional to the strain taken on the string. A greater strain on the string increases the intensity of the blow, while a lighter strain on the string will lessen the inten-sity.

WARNING: At no time during the pull cycle should the maximum recom-mended load be exceeded. Refer to Chart A – Strength Data on page 5 for pull loads.

An upward strain on the wireline is created by reeling the hoist until the wireline is stretched. Set the hoist brake and wait for the Jar to strike. After the Jar has struck, slack off the string to allow the Jar to close.

Repeat the jarring action by pulling an-other strain on the string. The frequency of the blows struck can be as rapid as the operator can pick up and slack off the running string. The operation can be repeated as needed to free the stuck tool.

To Jar DownThe tools are assembled and run in the hole in the usual manner and the fish or equipment is engaged.

Manually pull or use a reel to position the Logan Tubular Wireline Jar. Sudden release or rapid unreeling will cause the weight of the Jar and sinker bars to close the Jar. As the Jar closes on the down-stroke, a sharp downward blow will be delivered when the link body bot-toms against the bottom sub.

Repeat the jarring action by pulling an-other strain on the string. The frequency of the blows struck can be as rapid as the operator can pull up and release the running string.

ASSEMBLYThe Logan Tubular Wireline Jar is easily assembled using standard shop tools.Make sure all parts have been thor-oughly cleaned, inspected, and lubri-cated prior to assembly. Replace any damaged or worn parts.

1. Secure the link body horizontally in a suitable vise. Clamp near the

center of the link body.

2. Attach the top sub. Wrench only on the wrench flats.

3. Insert the lock pin into the top sub.

4. Carefully slide the mandrel into the link body and top sub.

CAUTION: Be careful not to scratch or gouge the polished mandrel sur-face.

5. Install the bottom sub.

6. Insert the set screw into the bottomsub.

MAINTENANCEThe Logan Tubular Wireline Jar should be disassembled, cleaned, inspected, and reassembled after each use.

Apply thread dope to the threaded joints and coat the mandrel with grease at reassembly. To prevent corrosion, all exposed surfaces should be cleaned, and greased or painted prior to storage.

DISASSEMBLYDisassembly should be conducted in a clean, well-equipped shop. Proceed as follows:

1. Secure the Jar horizontally in a suitable vise. Clamp near the

center of the link body.

2. Loosen and remove the set screwfrom the bottom sub.

3. Remove the bottom sub.

4. Unthread the mandrel from the top sub.

5. Carefully slide the mandrel from the link body and set it aside.

CAUTION: Be careful not to scratch or gouge the polished mandrel sur-face.

6. Using a punch, remove the lock pinfrom the top sub.

7. Remove the top sub. Wrench only on the wrench flats.
