2015 is designated by the Government as Year of Irish Design. ID2015, the organisation created to oversee the year, has teamed up with the Saint Patrick’s Festival which this year will contain design elements.

DIT were been asked to submit a proposal to the St. Patrick’s Day Festival

This submission has been designed by Head of Design at the Dublin School of Creative Arts, Barry Sheehan, and modelled by Interior and Furniture Design students, Richard May and Tomas Barisauskas.

Terry Maher and Liam Sharkey provided technical and logistical support.

Project Title:

“Reflect Yourself”

Celebrating Now: The Concept

The Saint Patrick’s Festival Parade theme is ‘CELEBRATE NOW’. This theme is derived from the idea that we as people sometimes forget to focus on the here and now, we have a natural tendency towards reflecting on the past or wondering about the future - in 2015 St. Patrick’s Festival will embrace ‘nowness’, asking people to live in the now, to savour the moment!

What specifically prevents us from reflecting on the past or wondering about the future? A Mirror. A mirror provides that snapshot in time, reflecting only the here and now.

Although you can capture the image in a mirror, the mirror will have moved on whilst you gaze at that image.

The “Sense of Place”

The reflections are on the buildings and the people, all coming together for one moment in time. The mirrors are at different angles, all the better to see the crowd and reflect what is taking place ….and who in this era wouldn’t want a selfie of the reflections, the bands, the crowd, and the parent with the child on their shoulder?

Loosely based on the form of a fairground carousel Reflect Yourself is clad in brightly coloured Perspex. Reflections of the City and its people will be suffused with colour.

The Technical Stuff

The machine is of lightweight, largely tubular and angular powder coated metal, with translucent coloured perspex and acrylic mirror materials.

Engineering

Reflect Yourself is being engineered by recognised engineers Garland Consultancy. The project is led by Director Brian Kavanagh with Project Engineer James McGinley

Structure

The structure consists of a metal base, which is weighted down by blockwork.

There is a slot in the base into which a metal pole is slotted. Off the pole are hung eighth lightweight metal frames with coloured Perspex infill panels.

The panel sections have double-sided acrylic mirrors hung from them. There are also angled mirrors on the shaft of Reflect Yourself.

The base is covered in mirror, which disguises some of its construction. You can see exposed blockwork, which is used to weigh the base down. There are no fixings into the ground.

Locations

The unit has been specifically designed to sit on a level surface and not require ground fixings. The first location that has been agreed is in Dublin Castle in the Dubhlinn Gardens outside the Coach House, which acts as a hub for ID2015. The unit will be erected on Saturday March 14th, 2015 and taken down on Tuesday March 17th at the end of the day.

As the project has been designed as part of ID2015 it is planned to reinstall it in a number of different locations. DIT Grangegorman is the first and perhaps the most obvious one. However negotiations are underway for other locations such as Dail Éireann.

Construction

The steel structure has been manufactured by Henry McGinley and Sons in Milford, Donegal.

Sponsorship

Reflect Yourself has been funded by ID2015 and the Saint Patrick’s Festival. It also received funding from DIT Corporate Partnerships.

Design Services were provided by The Dublin School of Creative Arts at DIT Grangegorman and Engineering Services by Garland Consultancy.

RFL Steels in Naas provided all of the steel and Henry McGinley & Sons constructed the steelwork. This was all done gratis.
