A quality Metalworking Fluid also:• Reduces the workpiece temperature• Improves dimensional stability• Provides effective chip removal• Improves the workpiece finish• Controls rust, foam and microbes (which can lead to dermatitis)• Keeps your machine clean, and• Helps to create an acceptable workplace environment for you and your team.

What are the recommended concentration levels? Usually between 4% and 8%. This will vary however, depending on the material you’re machining and the type of operation.

How much concentrate should be added?As a rule, to maintain a 5% mix, you should top up with a 1% to 2% mix for synthetics, 2% to 3% for semi synthetics and 3% to 4% for soluble oils. Always remember to add a concentrate and water mix.

What happens if I don’t keep the concentration under control?If the concentration is too low, the mixture can go off and start to smell. It also affects lubrication, corrosion control and cleanliness. If you have the concentration too high, you’ll have issues with foaming and

residue, and possible problems with dermatitis.

How do I check that the concentration level is correct? The most common way is the “looks good, smells good” test. This however, doesn’t show up any small changes that may have occurred. The easiest and most accurate way is to use a hand-held Refractometer. You can get one of these from Trade Tools. We will be happy to assist with training in their use.

How can I make fluid last longer?An easy way is to keep the fluid clean. Do a thorough clean-out before you put a fresh mix in the machine. Keep the fluid free from swarf and grit as dirt in the mix can lead to poor surface finish and excessive tool wear. Keep the fluid clear from tramp oil too, and any other contaminants such as cleaning fluids. Also remember to

keep the fluid aerated.

In this issue, we’re looking at metalworking fluids, when you should use them and ways to get around some common problems.

There are four parts to the metal removal system: 1. The Machine Tool or Grinder; 2. The Cutting Tool or Grinding Wheel; 3. The part being machined and; 4. The Metalworking Fluid.

Why is choosing a quality Metalworking Fluid an important part of the system? • It keeps the cutting tool cool throughout the cutting process • It reduces the cutting forces• Both of the above lead to longer tool or wheel life (thereby reducing your costs).
