Feature No. 11SE-B/R17, A Kung Ngam Road, Shau Kei WanResponse to comments on GEO Checking Certificate
Reference is made tothe tele-conversation between our Mr. Kenny Yau and your goodself on 18August 2008 and your memo (ref. no. GCD 2 E1/11 SE-D/R 17) dated 19 August 2008 regardingthe application of GEO Checking Certificate for the captioned feature. We would like to respond toyour comments as follow:
1. Responding to para 7 of your memo dated 2 August 2004, the design geological model hasbeen verified during the upgrading works and the assumptions on ground condition andgroundwater levels were found valid. Findings on design geological model have beenincorporated in the slope maintenance manual.
2. Further to para 1.6 of our letter (ref. no. 1180) dated 23 August 2004 and para (c) of letter (ref.no. 1635) dated 12 July 2005 in the same series, the rock outcrop was found to be freshgranite rock and the condition of the rock outcrop is good. No adverse joint or loose block wasobserved on the rock outcrop. Therefore, No stabilization work is necessary for the rockoutcrop. For photos showing the condition of rock outcrop, please refer to our letter (ref. no.2099) dated 15 April 2008.
3. Further to para 1.3 of our letter (ref. no. 1192) dated 9 September 2004 and para (c) of letter(ref. no. 1635) dated 12 July 2005 in the same series, the unregistered retaining wall at thenorthern portion of the subject feature has been inspected during the construction works andno sign of distress is observed. Hence, upgrading works on the unregistered retaining wallportion is not necessary.

4. The GEO Checking Certificate for feature No. 11SE-8/R17 has been revised as per yourcomments and enclosed herewith for your approval.
5. Please note that there are typo errors for vertical spacing between ground & first row of nailsand first & second row of nails at Ch.42m to Ch.56m on drawing no. HY200321/119/04J. Theactual amounts of spacing are 0.65m and 1.15m respectively. Hence the figures shown on as-built drawing no. HY200321/119/04K is correct. Please refer to the Annex A of our letter (ref.no. 2099) dated 15 April 2008 for the proposed elevation of the soil nails. For stability checkingof retaining wall portion at Ch.42m to Ch.56m, please refer to Annex D of the letter (ref. 2099).

1.1 There were typo mistakes in the schedule otsof nails at Section C-C (zone C) of Annex Aattached with the aforesaid letter. The levels (f soil nail nos. Ca1 to Ca7 have been revisedas in the attached Annex A. Please note thr t Ca7, which was oriented by 450 clockwisedirection owing to insufficient working space for soil installation, has not been taken accountin the stability checking. Therefore, the slope stability design only considered the soil nailnos. Ca1 to Ca6.
1.2 Reference is made to our final design amendment submission under letter ref.WWL:AWPH:tkc1 :50603/119/MGS/1586 datec 12 May 2005. As proposed in the finaldesign amendment submission (represented b ' Section C1-C1 in the aforesaid submission),gap between wall and the rock outcrop has be sn backfilled until 1.5m below the wall crest.Since the retaining height at portion between Ch 18 and Ch 24m is less than 1.5m, noupgrading works is required.
Regarding the relationship between the eXlf.rng rock outcrop and feature, photo takenduring the site visit on 1B February 2008 are enclosed in Annex B for your information.Borehole record of nearby drillhole DH1 is alsc snclosed in Annex C to indicate that shallowrockhead is encountered in the vicinity of teatu' ,_.

perusal. The calculation for force mobilised by soil nails with 3m rock embedment is alsoattached. The coefficient of active earth pressure Ka has been reviewed and adopted theformula using Coulomb Theory as stipulated in Figure 17 of Geoguide 1. The updated Kavalue of 0.24 has been adopted for wall stability checking. It reveals that the currentgeotechnical standard is fulfilled.
