My six month consulting contract is up at the end of this month so I was looking forward to “real” retirement at last. But the contract was extended indefi nitely; at least through December, maybe into 2018. Nice to have the bit of extra income and I do like keeping up with the doings at my old offi ce. I have full work email access so I get all the inner-offi ce bulletins, gossip, etc. I still have lots of friends there who I will miss when I am fi nally disconnected...

I started a new “hobby” when I retired back in April. I started going through the list of 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die, by Stephen Schneider. With my weird working hours before retirement I had little time for movie watching. But now I have the time, why not? I have found that very few of the ones on the list I’ve watched so far were bad movies, many were great. And many I would never have seen if they hadn’t been on the list. So far I’ve seen about 150 of them and a 100 more not on the list but I was still interested in seeing. The list is heavy on horror and drama, which I would normally avoid, and light on my favorite genre: Musical Comedy. (And no I haven’t turned in my man card yet...)

The Corvetter October 2017CCT General Membership Meeting Minutes

September 15, 2017

SAVE THE DATE, 10/27

Do you love a parade?

Friday afternoon, 10/27 is the Richardson High School Homecoming Parade.

Staging starts at 3:00 and the parade starts at 4:00 in Richardson.

More details will be coming out about our exact meeting place and the parade route.

• After the parade we will go to a nearby restaurant so we can eat, visit together and stay out of the Friday evening rush hour traffi c.

• This is in conjunction with our partnership this year with Mark Mester, Richardson High School Automotive Instructor. This is an opportunity for our club to have visibility in a local community.

• On Friday night, 9/15 at our CCT meeting, Mark mentioned that all parade participants are asked to bring a new pair of socks or a new pair of underwear. These items are donations to the Richardson Clothes Closet, a non-profi t for students in need of clothing.

The Garrisons will bring several bulk packs of socks and underwear, plenty for our club’s participation. Nobody in the club needs to bring these items individually. We just want you to come and participate in the parade.

Questions? Contact Debbie Garrison, 214-533-6111

Bob Kee called the meeting to order at 7:30

An announcement was made regarding the dinner location for after the meeting. Dinner was hosted by Sharon Norris

Debbie Garrison talked about the Sept 30 trip to Weatherford’s Vintage Diner and Car Museum

Paul Deen shared about the 2017 NCCC convention that he and Karen attended. They saw the eclipse while there and got really cool shirts too. They reminded us that next year’s convention is in New Orleans

The Corvetter October 2017

Since CCT has a packed schedule in October on Saturday mornings I have decided to try a diff erent type of get-together: a Sunday Supper Club. There are lots of places to choose from and I have selected a restaurant that I think we’ll all enjoy.

The Corvette Club of Texas Sunday Supper Club will meet on Sunday, October, 15. 2017 at 5:00 pm at:

Kenny's East Coast Pizza4701 W. Park Blvd., #101

Plano, TX 75093

(972) 519-9669

http://kennyseastcoastpizza.com

Kenny Bowers is a native Bostonian who moved to Dallas to join family members. The chef/entrepreneur worked in several successful restaurants and has opened fi ve of them in the Kenny's Restaurant Group (http://kennysfood.com/restaurants/ ).

Kenny’s East Coast Pizza (the newest in the group) off ers New York style pizzas prepared in a classic Bakers Pride Deck Oven. In addition to a selection of 14” pizzas, the restaurant menu includes classic Italian-American appetizers, salads and sandwiches, and classic Italian-American specialties like Chicken Parmigiano, Lasagna and Baked Ziti with Meatballs. In August, 2017, Kenny's East Coast Pizza celebrated its fi rst anniversary. The Sunday special - huge meatballs for $1 each.

Send an RSVP to [email protected] or call 817-253-4030. Always call or text with last minute changes, please.

Our dear friend and CCT member, Dennis Bertwell, passed away a few days ago after his two year battle with bone cancer and rests within the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. His wife, Patti, and all the other family members wish to let you know they are not in need of anything at this time but cards are certainly welcome.

Send to:

Mrs. Patti Bertwell and Family

1654 Hyland Oaks Dr.

Grapevine TX 76051

When Dennis and Patti were active in CCT, they planned many of our activities. We have great memories of those times. I once asked Dennis what the most important thing in life was, and he smiled and said “My wife and my children. I love my family so much.” He left a legacy of strength, true love and compassion and never hesitated to help someone in need. Patti gave every ounce of her time and energy to help care for Dennis during the prolonged and severe times of his illness. Their marriage vows, “for better or for worse” certainly refl ected their deep love for each other. That kind of love will never die.

Please visit www.dignitymemorial.com or www.legacy.com to express your condolences, etc. and view more details of the celebration of Dennis’ life.

Mark Mester, Automotive Instructor at Richardson High School, was present and provided us with information on the Richardson High School Homecoming Parade on Friday afternoon October 27th. Mark gave a speech last month telling us how he provides hands-on instruction for students on diagnosis of faults in the automotive shop. Students can earn a certifi cation they can use for fi rst year of work and then gain full automotive certifi cation. Our club is looking at joining with his classes for mutual benefi ts.

Thanks to Friendly Chevrolet and Mark Eddins for supporting the club, providing a place for us to meet and selling us such great Corvettes. Thanks to Bob Kee our president and to Joe Wagner for another great newsletter last month and to Paulette for sponsoring the monthly brunches. Thanks to Paul Wolter for being our NCCC Governor and telling us about the upcoming events, to Mary Wolter for doing so many things including being our Membership Person and to Debbie Garrison for bringing raffl e prizes regularly, cookies and other things to eat at the meeting.

Lastly, but most important, thanks to the Corvette club members that join in our activities. It takes a lot of work from a lot of people to run the club. All of these eff orts are what make our club such a nice organization.

By Charles Whitaker

The monthly brunch was held on September 23rd 2017 at the Raven’s Grill located inside the Texas Star Golf Course Club House in Euless, Texas. There were 15 Corvette Club of Texas members in attendance. The Corvette club members were Joe & Paulette Wagner, Charles Whitaker, John & Selma Booth, Ray & Pat Kimminau, Bob Kee, Bob & Paula Mischel and Paul & Mary Wolter. I took photos of several of the early-arriving Corvettes and then just wandered around taking photos of the interesting décor.

The Corvetter October 2017NCCC 58th Annual Convention

Bowling Green, KentuckyAugust 21-25, 2017

Karen and I attended the event this year and thoroughly enjoyed the events that we attended, since there was so much to do we couldn’t do everything and since we drove our Impala we couldn’t compete in the competition events. We did manage to make it to the Drag racing and Autocross events, both high and low speed.

Sunday was mainly registration and hospitality, greeting old friends we’ve known for 45 years since our fi rst convention here in Dallas. That night at the party we were entertained by a great Blues and Jazz band: Seven members with a great female singer who did some Tina Turner moves and Billy Holiday Blues. Altogether some really good dance and listening music.

The rallye was held on Monday as were the judged and Peoples Choice car shows but the big happening was the total solar eclipse that afternoon. Quite a sight, a bunch of people standing around outside, mid-day, looking through funky looking lenses and looking up at the sun while holding a beer in the other hand. That night Karen and I went to Nashville to see some friends playing at Robert’s Western World on So. Broadway. Good fun all day.

Tuesday the drags were held at the old Beech Bend park. It’s not as nice as some of the newer facilities but is still quite serviceable. If you have an opportunity to go there be sure and take a seat cushion to save getting a splinter in a place you don’t want it. The track is smooth and the crew keeps it clean. They have a good sound system so you can hear who is racing. The new C7s have their own unique sound and the tires add to that sound. The Funkhana was held at the convention center for a couple days. There were several tours available departing from the host hotel including Fontanel, former home of country music’s Barbara Mandrel. Another tour was to Nashville (Music City) Jamboree and Gibson Guitar factory. There was also a bus for a Mammoth Cave tour. Tuesday night was the “Southern Hoedown” party where Karen won the prize for the best outfi t. Ask her about her prize when you see her.

The new National Corvette Museum’s Motor Sports Park is an outstanding facility with many diff erent areas for diff erent type of auto events. Wednesday saw the low-speed autocross event held there. There is a go kart track where, for $40 you get to take 15 minutes on track racing against the clock. A good driver can get in about 8 laps. There is a large 22 acre skid pad where the low-speed autocrosses were held and max speeds were under 65 MPH. The road course was the best I’ve seen in many years of attending these events. It is laid out to take advantage of the rolling hills with off -camber turns and plenty of areas to stretch the legs on your Corvette. Some of the drivers reported achieving speeds of 135 mph on the front straight. During the day tours were again off ered and Wednesday night was “Boots and Bowties” themed dance night. Good Country band (what would you expect near Nashville?) and judging for best Boots and Bowties. I won for best Bowtie, an American Flag styled tie. Prize was a $20.17 gift card at Walmart.

The high speed event was held on Thursday at MSP and it was fun watching Corvette after Corvette fl ying by at full throttle and braking hard into an off -camber right hander, 2nd gear turn. Again several tours for those interested. The night’s entertainment was a DJ that had a really wide variety of music. Lots of fun doing some old (60s-80s) style dancing. There were lots of hugs and goodbyes as many people were leaving Friday morning.

Friday’s breakfast buff et started the day while convention awards were handed out. The golf tournament started at 11am, hospitality was open for hugs and tears till 5pm and the NCCC annual awards banquet was at 6pm. We spent the afternoon touring the National Corvette Museum and trying to get everything back in the car. Dinner was good, the bartender earned her tips and friends were many.

‘We joined for the car and stayed for the people” is a very telling statement when involved with NCCC.

The Corvetter October 2017Governor’s Report. (Submitted by Paul Wolter)After going through nearly the whole month the September, North Texas fi nally started receiving rain on the 27th. This was a welcome occurrence, except for those hosting and attending the fall Good Guys event at the Texas Motor Speedway. Rain was forecasted to occur on Friday, the opening day of the event.

Our annual joint autocross in Mineral Wells with Cowtown Vettes is coming up fast on November 18th & 19th. Cowtown will host Saturday’s seven autocrosses and CCT will again host seven autocrosses on Sunday. This is our annual fund raiser and we want it to be successful again. Several of our members who have helped work the autocross in the past years will not be available to work this year’s event. Thus, we need more help to continue to host the November event.

Dennis Bertwell, one of our former members who has worked as the autocross starter, announcing the competitor’s car number to the corner workers and timing then releasing the Corvette onto the road course unfortunately lost his battle with cancer on September 5th. Thanks to all the CCT members who attended the celebration of life for Dennis on Saturday, September 23rd. It was evident that Dennis had a lot of friends who could attend and tell “stories” about Dennis. We are thankful to have known Dennis, Patti and his family who made an impression on all of us. Our thoughts and prayers go out to family and friends.

Here are several Corvette events that are coming up soon, plus our joint CCT/CTV autocross:

Saturday October 14th Brazos River 12th Annual Corvette Show in Granbury

Saturday October 21st is Cowtown Vettes 16th Annual Corvette Show in Fort Worth

Saturday and Sunday November 18 & 19 is the CCT/CTV joint autocross in Mineral Wells. CCT’s seven autocrosses will be held on Sunday, November 19th.

Other 2017 NCCC Southwest Region event dates and fl iers that are being hosted are provided at: http://www.ncccswregion.org/schedule_2017.html

NCCC Bowling Green Convention.

The 2017 NCCC National Convention was held August 21st thru 24th in Bowling Green, KY. A little over 500 people attended convention. The Motor Sports Performance track tour was very popular. The Music Jamboree and Gibson tours were very popular. Attendees commented that the eclipse was pretty cool too. The bands were great and the party themes were fun. As a group, the NCCC convention participants consumed 28 kegs of beer, 44 boxes of wine and 1196 cans of soda. The end fi nancial result is expected to be about $16,000.00 profi t.

The 2018 NCCC National Convention is being hosted by the Southwest Region in New Orleans, LA. Watch for future information on the events that are being planned and how CCT members can contribute. Registration will open for this convention on February 1st, 2018.

Rocky Mountain Region has requested that they be approved to host the 60th annual NCCC Convention July 7th through 12th, 2019 in Denver Colorado. Rocky Mountain Region hosted conventions in 1979, 1999 and 2009.
