And they weren’t just asking about interest rates, which can vary widely from one card to another. According to the survey of over 36,000 readers’ experi- ences with nearly 62,000 cards, they found that con- sumers had far fewer billing headaches and other prob- lems with cards issued by credit unions! By contrast, some of the biggest banks (and most ubiquitous credit card advertisers) earned scores near the bottom of the rankings by consumers. The difference is clear. Credit unions, like TTCU, are run by the members so they have a vested interest in provid- ing credit at very low rates that offer impeccable service to back them up. On the other hand, banks have to worry more about keeping their investors happy. And, what about those fees? Large credit card issuers control nearly 80% of the Visa and MasterCard market, so they tend to have “take it or leave it” terms, unfair late fees and unexpected interest-rate increases. And none of them ranked exceptional at resolving problems. Despite congressional hearings chastising issues for excessive charges, and the introduction of several bills in Congress this year that would clamp down on such prac- tices, fees continue to climb. Penalty fees for late pay- ments have more than doubled in the past 12 years, from an average of $13 in 1995 to $28 this year, with some as high as $39. And, after just one late payment, cardhold- ers can get hit with a penalty interest rate as high as 32% by some companies. The Consumer Reports survey respondents also reported wide differences in how their card issuers treated them when something went wrong - not an uncommon occur- ance in the world of credit. Credit Unions ranked at the very top of the list for cardholder service with Capital One and HSBC rated “below average” and Providian rank- ing with the lowest scores. Most everyone who extends credit today reviews your creditscore. They want to know if you pay your credit in full and ontime, as well as your current debt ratio to establish whether youare a good credit risk. Bad risk credit applicants pay more inter-est on their loans, and have more restrictive terms from creditorsthan good risk credit applicants. Credit scorers place your creditdata into their computer programs and out pops a number. Butthey can’t tell you precisely how they calculated that figure. Theprocess of establishing a credit score is completed through a com-plex series of calculations, however below are some helpful tips onhow to raise your credit score.

1. Number of open accounts - You can have too few or toomany. The optimum number probably ranges between six andeight.2. Balances - Open accounts with balances reduces your scoremore than open accounts per se.3. Balance/limits - Numerous accounts with balances sittingclose to the limit will bring down your score.4. Credit inquiries - Whenever someone checks your credit file, itcounts against your score. However, multiple checks within twoweeks may not hurt as much as if it appears that you’re merelyshopping different lenders for one loan. Your personal inquiriesdon’t affect your score.5. Payment record - Obviously, late payments hurt your score. But, supposedly FICO doesn’t distinguish between late mortgagepayments and late payments on your Visa or student loan.(Mortgage lenders though, most certainly do care. Always pay yourmortgage or rent first.)6. Recency counts - Late payments two years ago don’t hurt asmuch as two months ago.7. Black marks - Multiple lates on multiple accounts, collections, unpaid judgments, and tax liens devastate your score.

Some categories weigh more than others:• Age of credit (15 percent)• Mix of credit (10 percent)• Amount of balances (30 percent)• Payment history (35 percent)• Recent credit inquiries (10 percent)

The above clues shed some light on the credit scoring process.Perhaps most importantly, they show why “perfect credit” in thesense of “no lates” does not necessarily generate the highestcredit score. To improve your score, you must not only pay yourbills on time but also manage your credit according to the credit-scoring programs.
