Captain’s career takes the prize

After a career of learning from those around him and being the kind of captain others learn from, Capt. Len Beck of M/Y Battered Bull was honored with the 2012 Distinguished Crew Award on Thursday night.

“Anything I have done right is a reflection of all the people that I have been affected by, all the good captains, effective crew and intelligent owners, the ones who take the time to offer guidance,” Beck said yesterday, taking a break from a busy day of showing the 171-foot Feadship.

“All that rubs off. That, and keeping your ears open and your eyes open.”

Beck has been a captain more than 25 years. He’s spent a majority

of that time working with the owners of Battered Bull. He credits his relationship with the owner for the success he’s had in command.

“Without a doubt, the most important thing is the captain-owner relationship,” he said. “If it’s good and honest, that allows the success of the boat to blossom.”

And from that close relationship also blooms a familial feeling among crew.

“He’s really loyal to the people he works with and well respected by the people who he’s taken under his wing,” said Zoe Nicolas, chief stew on Battered Bull for the past 18 months.

Captain’s focus is ‘up the food chain’

than on any other she’s worked.“He doesn’t take just anybody

onboard,” she said. “It’s like family, and his overriding feeling is with the owner. There’s no drama.

“He’s very enthusiastic about every part of the yacht,” she said. “You want to do the best you can for the owners because of the way he is. I’m very lucky to be on this boat.”

That attention to the owner’s experience has paid off for Beck and the crew he’s worked with.

“I keep looking up the food chain and reminding the crew, that’s what it’s all about,” Beck said. “We make sure they enjoy their time onboard and make sure they feel their investment in it and in us is worth it.”

In recent years, the Distinguished Crew Award has gone to the entire crew of a vessel for a specific act of heroism or rescue. Honoring an individual captain for a career of work has only been done once before, Capt. Phil Walsh, the former longtime captain of M/Y Turmoil.

Being honored at a formal gala reminded Beck of the international yachting community he is a part of, and it was both humbling and a little

embarrassing, he said.“You get on a boat and you are so

focused on the needs of the owner and guests, and we’re all so busy all the time and spread so thin, and then we come together at a boat show like this and get to go to an event like that. It’s special.

“I feel incredibly fortunate to be part of such a unique profession and exposed to people who are so dynamic and creative and intelligent and energetic,” he said. “If people think I fit into that, I’m honored.”

Other leaders honored Thursday night include Dean du Toit, founder of National Marine Suppliers, who was named Business Person of the Year.

Other winners: Marcel Onkenhout of Oceanco for Excellence in Innovation; The Chicago Park District and Westrec Marinas with the Fabien Cousteau Blue Award; and Terence Disdale of Terence Disdale Designs honored with the Leadership Award.

The awards are organized and hosted by the International Superyacht Society. They were announced during the group’s annual Design & Leadership Award gala. Design award winners include:

For Best Power, larger than 65m, M/Y Musashi, the 288-foot (87.8m) Feadship, designed by Sinot Yacht Design and Feadship. Musashi also took the award for best interior.

For Best Power, 40-65m, M/Y Galileo G, a 183-foot (55m) Picchiotti designed by Philippe Briand and Vitruvius Yachts.

For Best Power, 24-40m, M/Y O’Pati, a 129-foot (39m) yacht built by Golden Yachts and designed by Giorgio Vafiadis.

For Best Sail, larger than 40m, S/Y Vertigo, a 220-foot (67m) Alloy also designed by Briand.

For Best Sail, 24-40m, S/Y Antares III, a 98-foot (30m) yacht built by Yachting Developments and designed by Dixon Yacht Design.

The Best Refit of the year was on the S/Y Endeavour, a 130-foot (39m) sloop refit by Yachting Developments with design by Chas Nicholson.

CHECKING THE TIDE: What have you dropped overboard?Every crew member we spoke to

lost something overboard. Top of the list were sunglasses and personal items such as cell phones and hats.

They also lost equipment (think VHFs and Leathermans), but about

half as often, and those slippery cleaning tools such as chamois cloths and Shurhold poles. We’ll blame the lost cushions on the wind.

There were also odd things lost overboard, like the steaks that slid off the grill when someone forgot to secure it down, and the odd denture that guests involuntarily barfed over the side. Not going back for those.

We’re protecting the identity of one captain who admitted to “losing” an old treadmill overboard. Let’s hope it’s become a reef.
