Beth Ziesenis is always on the look for new productivity tools, runs her own website and blog (www.askbethz.com) and gives lectures across the coun-try. She is an author, speaker and complete tech geek. Since her first Commodore 64 computer, Ziesenis has been fascinated with technology and computer shortcuts that make people’s lives easier.

Whether alphabetizing a list, organizing a meeting or scanning through your computer to find and delete large files to make room on your hard drive, Beth Ziesenis has found tools and apps that can make any part of your com-puter life easier and less complicated. These are the ones you discover late at night when you’re still in the office – the ones you are excited to install and share with your col-leagues with an immediate “Hey, look what I found!” email.

Inspiration for writing Upgrade to Free: The Best Free & Low-Cost Online Tools & Apps came about accidentally. In the summer of 2007, Beth Z posted a question on a forum for association executives: “What are your favorite free and low-cost tech tools?” Within two days, she had a list of 60-plus tools. Beth Z assembled the list and distributed it to the forum. Soon she started receiving re-quests to put the list into newsletters and magazines. She eventually created a webpage to put all the applications on at www.askbethz.com.

The chapters are organized by topic and include tips by the author relating how the applications have helped with her life. Beth Z’s quirky sense of humor fills the pages and makes this book an entertaining and enlightening read.

Cotton Bales, Goatmen & Witches: Legends from the Heart of Texas

Compiled by BRADLEY T. TURNERPhotographs by MARK BURDINE

Witches wandering in the forest and chanting; ethereal silhouettes swaying from the trees of Cameron Park; un-earthly gatherings heard from afar on the shores of Lake Waco – these tales leave locals quaking in fear and add to the rich social and cultural history of the Heart of Texas.

Stories dating as far back as the Civil War and as re-cent as the 1990s fill the pages of Cotton Bales, Goatmen & Witches: Legends from the Heart of Texas. In addition to the origins of legends, the book also makes room for multiple variations of certain tales, like the infamous Cameron Park witch. Accounts of strange happenings at the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum, a small girl who wanders the grounds of St. Mary’s and voices whispering in the old high schools around McLennan County will steal you away to menacing places filled with ominous omens.

Whether you believe in ghost stories and legends or not, Cotton Bales, Goatmen & Witches: Legends from the Heart of Texas contains enough information to spark the in-terest of anyone curious about the strange happenings in the greater Central Texas area.

“Knocking on the right tombstone after dark will cause the spirit of the grave’s resident to rise angrily from the soil and charge, screaming at the agitator.” –Bradley T. Turner

Joseph Abbott is a writer and copyeditor based in Waco, Texas. A University of Texas graduate, he started his news-paper career at the UT student newspaper, The Daily Texan, and went on to the copy desk at the Waco Tribune-Herald.

Karen Mitchell Smith earned her English degree from Texas Tech University in 1985 and, since then, has been a college recruiter, teacher and long-time writer. An accomplished moti-vational speaker, she also pres-ents seminars for educators and high school students.

From skyscrapers to small pieces of jewelry, welders are needed to safely bond materials for everyday use. Industries rely on the expertise of highly skilled welders be-cause lives depend on the quality of welders’ work. Weld-ing is not just crafting two pieces of metal together, but requires technological savvy, too.

“We are seeing more and more technology coming into play, so it doesn’t have the stigma of welders being high school dropouts that it once had,” says Dave Cotner, head of the welding program at Pennsylvania College of Technology.

Welders can now work with newer technologies like la-sers, electron beams and ultrasounds from behind a com-puter console operating a remote device.

TechCareers: Welding Technology provides an in-depth guide to the job-market potential of welding as well as what requirements are needed to become a welder. Employment overviews, skill requirements, a compre-hensive list of welding programs in the United States and everything else needed for a career in the welding and metal-working business are also explained in detail in the book, making this book a must-read for those interested in a welding career.

TechCareers: Graphic Design explores the career po-tential in the centuries-old tradition of graphic design and printing. It provides insight into what the future might be for those interested in entering the field and delves into the two types of graphic design one can pursue: print or elec-tronic. Darla Johnson is a choreogra-pher, teacher and writer living in Austin, Texas. She was the co-artistic director of John-son/Long Dance Company from 1990 to 2005. Johnson founded the Dance Depart-ment at Austin Community College. In 1990, ACC added her improvisation class. She has received the Austin Com-munity College Teachers Excel-lence Award twice and the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development Award for Teaching Excellence and Service.

Modern dance has evolved over time to encompass a wide variety of definitions. Stepping out of comfort zones and following the voice of improvisation is a necessity for cho-reographers. It is through the “unfamiliar” and “uncomfort-able” that creating art with the body becomes a reality.

“Listening is exactly where we need to start,” says Al-lison Orr in the book’s introduction. The world of dance revolves around listening to other dancers, students, the environment, and one’s self. The Art of Listening: Intuition & Improvisation in Choreography takes the reader on a guided tour of the different landmarks of listening needed to take a dance from idea to actuality, from creating the initial con-cept to feedback and collaboration.

This book also explores how to listen to and express your creative voice, engage in creative processes and what practices work for each person as a choreographer, along with practical advice on rehearsal and performance eti-quette. Those desiring to choreograph professionally will gain insight into what it takes to keep an improvisational mentality, the most basic tool for dance-making.

The Art of Listening: Intuition & Improvisation in Choreography

TechCareers: Graphic Design explores the career po-tential in the centuries-old tradition of graphic design and printing. It provides insight into what the future might be for those interested in entering the field and delves into the two types of graphic design one can pursue: print or elec-tronic. Various careers in the field include type design, book publishing, website design and animation.

With sections on education and training requirements, as well as job descriptions and salary ranges, TechCareers: Graphic Design is a great resource for anyone considering a career in the business.

Wind turbines are relatively simple machines. Slow rota-tional energy and torque of the turbine converts into a high-speed rotation that is fed into the generator. From there, the generator produces the necessary electricity, which is transmitted to the substation for consumption. This is re-ally an oversimplification of the process, as there are thou-sands of components – both stationary and moving – that are required for all of this to happen continuously.

A wind turbine technician will need to be familiar with all of the equipment inside a turbine. In addition, the job is autonomous by nature, and there will not be a lot of help readily available while at a remote work site. It is critical to be able to perform normal maintenance tasks, identify issues that may arise during time spent at the turbine and accurately troubleshoot when problems come up.

The topics covered in Electromechanical Principles of Wind Turbines allow students to become familiar with the components of a typical wind turbine and how they relate and interact with one another. Additionally, students will learn how to successfully operate and maintain turbines safely, reliably and efficiently. This book includes informa-tion on converting metric and United States standard units and information on required safety procedures.

Have you ever been confused as to when you should use aflex head, sliding T-handle or speeder handle socket wrench? Do you find yourself wondering why you’re strip-ping out bolt heads and screws? Has this left you wanting to know where you could find out which hand tool is right for the job so you aren’t making more work for yourself? Well, be frustrated no more!

The evidence of intelligence through the develop-ment and use of hand tools distinguishes humans from all other species of animals on earth. Though hand tools have evolved over the ages, one thing remains true: Good work-manship depends on the knowledge and expertise of the user. Perfect for do-it-yourself projects, this book details the mechanical construction and proper repair of the most commonly used gear to ensure hand tool mastery.

Thomas Dutton received a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Arts from Arizona State University and his associ-ate degree from Texas State Technical College in Biomedi-cal Equipment. He believes that attitude provides the key to success. He works to instill integrity and honesty in the students who take his solder-ing and shop skills classes. “Most biomedical equipment technicians work alone,” he said. “They must have the integrity to do the best work possible, even if no one is go-ing to check your work.”

“Today’s hand tools are expressions of human-ity’s desire to do something quickly and easily. If technicians do not know about tools that will save them time, or how to use those tools, then they are wasting money as well as time.”

Karen Mitchell Smith earned her English degree from Texas Tech University in 1985 and since then has been a college recruiter, teacher and long-time writer. An accomplished motivational speaker, she also presents seminars for educa-tors and high school students.

Katharine O’Moore-Klopf, a graduate of the University of Houston, began her career as a journalist in Texas, and then moved into production editing and copyediting for publishers in Colorado and New York City. She has been a self-employed copyeditor of books and peer-reviewed journal articles since 1995.

Typically, college success textbooks focus on tradi-tional higher education academic skills: note taking, test strategies, and research. However, in response to the increasing trend – especially at two-year colleges – of students immediately entering the workforce upon gradu-ation, Taking Charge: Your Education, Your Career, Your Life directly contextualizes these academic skills with the soft skills necessary to succeed in the workplace. In addition, all the subject areas covered in the book are related to per-sonal growth so that students may see that these skills are not used in isolation but are, rather, an integral part of the ongoing development everyone experiences in life.

Turner

Bradley T. Turner is a seventh-generation Wacoan. He teaches at several educational institu-tions in the local area and also enjoys working as a writer. Turner holds degrees from McLennan Community College, the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor and Baylor University. He also is the author of Cotton Bales, Goatmen & Witches: Leg-ends from the Heart of Texas.

With this eyebrow-raising title, Bradley T. Turner has cre-ated a book of Waco history, which is both enlightening and intriguing. From the circuit riders in the late 1800s to the Vietnam War in 1967 and their effects on Waco, Texas, Turner has fashioned a book that is an engaging book on local history.

Chapter topics range from the history of Camp Mac- Arthur to the horrific tornado of 1953. The chapter “Lord Have Mercy” goes into detail about the terrible tornado that struck Waco in May of 1953. From the irony of the In-dian saying that no tornado could ever strike the area to the catastrophic damage left in the tornado’s wake, this chap-ter gives fascinating insight into the experiences of those who survived. Other essays paint a history of circuit-riding preachers, prostitution, a deadly duel over Baylor Univer-sity, Cameron Park’s rich history, racial division and rela-tions in Waco and reaction to the Vietnam War.

Bradley T. Turner compiled the essays he wrote in grad-uate school to form Lust, Violence, Religion: Life in Historic Waco. He added five more from colleagues. Photographs in the book come from sources including The Texas Collec-tion, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and from the Turner Family Collection.

Lust, Violence, Religion: Life in Historic Waco

“Lust, Violence, Religion: Life in Historic Waco illuminates Waco’s history as colorful, controversial, violent and often tragic. Essays in this book document the rich and complex history of Waco and McLennan County, Texas.”

Whether alphabetizing a list, organizing a meeting or scan-ning through your computer to find and delete large files to make room on your hard drive, Beth Ziesenis has found tools and apps that can make any part of your computer life easier and less complicated. These are the ones you dis-cover late at night when you’re still in the office – the ones you are excited to install and share with your colleagues with an immediate “Hey, look what I found!” email.

Beth Z assembled the list and distrib-uted it to the forum. Soon she started receiving requests to put the list into newsletters and magazines. She even-tually created a webpage to put all the applications on at www.askbethz.com.

The chapters are organized by topic and include tips by the author relating how the applications have helped with her life. Beth Z’s quirky sense of humor fills the pages and makes this book an entertaining and enlightening read.
