Year 2 - “The Space I’m In” Course: “The Space I’m In: Art, Humanities & Technology Integration”

Course Checklist & Description 2 CPE credits = 60 hours, upon successful completion To pass this 2 credit, 60 hour course you must:

Attend all 4 face-to-face workshops (7 hours each, 28 hours total) Complete a pre-test during the first workshop Examine appropriate school data to determine academic skill weaknesses in students you

serve (eg. meet with your administrator to review PSSA data or other locally relevant

data), documenting that process on the project wiki using the lesson plan discussion tab. Create lesson(s)/units(s) with your school team on the project wiki that address the

students’ weak skills, using the LRP materials, making revisions as requested by project

staff. Share your lesson(s)/unit(s) with project staff at the Day 3 workshop & revise them prior

to implementation in spring 2012. Implement your lesson(s)/unit(s) during a scheduled rotation of materials in your school,

documenting the impact of the lessons. Conduct pre & post assessment of students’ knowledge of the skills you intend to teach,

tracking the impact of your lessons on student achievement, summarizing that data on the

project wiki. Share out and reflect upon your lesson(s)/units(s), illustrating the impact through sharing

student achievement data with project staff and participants on the final Day 4 workshop

in May 2012. Complete a post-test, course evaluation, and course survey during the final workshop at

IU1. *** Attendance at four workshop days at Intermediate Unit 1 counts for 28 hours of your required time. The remaining 32 hours of work will be completed in outside activities.

The Space I’m In: Arts, Humanities, & Technology Integration

Course Description For the purposes of this proposal, we define the following terms as follows: a) Participant - the teacher/educator enrolled in the course for purposes of learning the content provided b) Student - the learner in a school based classroom served by the participant enrolled in the course c) IU1 Facilitator - the personnel at the intermediate unit who are facilitating the learning of participants and administrating the state required elements for course completion d) AHT Practitioner - the arts, humanities, and/or technology personnel who are providing the unique content elements to be integrated into core content areas to support enhanced outcomes for participants and students The "Arts, Humanities, and Technology Integration" course is supported through professional development grants from the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation. The course is designed to help participants explore ways in which the integration of arts, humanities, and technology can help to increase student achievement and motivation in the tested subject areas of math and reading. The overarching goal of these grant projects is to promote best practices through the establishment of sets of integrated, cross-curricular lessons. The lessons will utilize various forms of the creative and performing arts, humanities, and technology connecting them to district curricula. The lessons will be directly aligned to content appropriate PA Department of Education academic and social and emotional standards. Currently, students within the IU1's service area average 70% proficiency in reading and 74.2% proficiency on the mathematics PSSA. This course will focus on helping participants to identify the weakest skills/anchors in both reading and math, which contribute most heavily to the sub standard achievement in their individual school settings. Participants will expand their pedagogical strategies "tool kit" through completion of a workshop based implementation of lessons created with the support of IU1 Facilitators and AHT Practitioners. Participants will also collaborate with a school-based team of colleagues to co-develop and implement the interdisciplinary lessons, incorporating the arts, humanities, and technology, into reading and/or math lessons. Arts integration is a research-based strategy that connects the various arts areas to more traditional subject matter. It's efficacy is proven in data that shows, “integration does not occur unless both the art form and the other academic subject(s) are taught so the students learn more than if they learned them separately” (p. 22). Integration activities not only

support PDE's use of "big ideas" in supporting cross-curricular connections, they increase student engagement, and have been demonstrated to support increased student achievement. Burnaford, April, & Weiss. 2001. Renaissance in the classroom: Arts integration and, meaningful learning. Mahwah, NJ: Lawrence Earlbaum Associates, 1- 34. The course will make use of innovative and highly motivating activities, which provide accommodation and differentiation for various learning styles (auditory, visual, kinesthetic, etc.). This will be supported through the utilization of emerging technologies for the purpose of documentation and sharing of knowledge by both teachers and students. The goal of the "Arts, Humanities, and Technology Integration" course is to help increase students' reading proficiency levels to 75% and mathematics proficiency levels to 80% respectively. Changes in student proficiency will be documented through the creation of teacher-made pre and post assessments of the identified skills to be taught. The "Arts, Humanities, and Technology Integration" course will be a two credit, 60 hour course. Participants may expect to spend approximately 28 hours in 4 face-to-face workshops, and 32 hours of additional time in individual/group work planning, implementing, documenting and sharing learning, lessons, and student outcomes. All required pre-test, post-tests, planning, reflections, projects and course evaluations will be completed in an online space. Participants in the "Arts, Humanities, and Technology Integration" course will: 1) successfully complete a pre/post assessment. 2) participate in the 4 face-to-face workshops with AHT Practitioners to learn integration strategies fro incoproating new techniques into the content areas. 3) identify students' content area weaknesses through the examination of school data. 4) collaborate with a school parther/team in the creation of integrated lessons, which address the identified weak skills through multidisciplinary, multi-learning style methods that incorporate arts, humanities, and/or technology elements, based on methods and materials provided by the AHT Practitioners. 5) incoporate a broad variety of academic and behavioral standards in the lesson planning. 6) conduct a pre/post asssessment of their students' knowledge in the identified skills area, to determine changes in achievement outcomes. 7) co-teach the integrated lesson plans with the support of the school team, AHT Practitioners, and IU1 Facilitators. 8) create a final project which documents the participant's learning, planning, and implementation of the lessons, in a medium that can be shared with other class participants on the final course workshop day.

Guidelines for Scheduling Materials and Museum Visit

Materials: • The workshop materials now come with an inventory list that must be

checked upon pick up and drop off. • Participants will be allowed 2 weeks with the materials and pick up and

drop off procedures will be discussed in the first workshop. • Shannon will post the dates that the materials will be in use on a Google

calendar linked to the wiki. • The scheduling of the materials must be made by calling or

emailing Shannon Berkheiser at the Mattress Factory (412.231.3169 [email protected]).

Museum Visit:

• Museum visits must be scheduled by January 1st 2012. • A Google Calendar on the wiki will show the Space I’m In participants’

visits. However, the Mattress Factory will be working visits into our regular tour schedule, which changes frequently. An open date on the Google calendar does not necessarily mean that it is available. Please call, schedule and confirm with Shannon.

• The Mattress Factory will pay for subs, busses and admission. Invoices are to be sent to the Mattress Factory: 500 Sampsonia Way Pittsburgh, PA 15212

• The Mattress Factory can accommodate 45 students max on an Installation Tour. If a school wants to bring more students we can schedule multiple tour dates.

• The Mattress Factory does not provide lunches on the visits but we will provide spaces for schools to eat if they want to bring their lunches.

• We want to personalize the tour visits for our Space I’m In participants so please schedule your trip as soon as you can so that we have plenty of time to create relevant programming for you.

• To schedule the visit please contact Shannon Berkheiser at the Mattress Factory (412.231.3169 [email protected]).

HOMEWORK Prior to our November, 2011 Meeting:

• Join the wiki (where you will complete your coursework).

o Go to: www.the-space-im-in.iu1.wikispaces.net o Click on “join this wiki”, o Follow the steps to “create an account” or do the “sign in” if you

already have an account, o Once you receive an email that you are approved as a member,

return to the wiki and visit your school’s page, o Click on your “lesson planning” link and familiarize yourself with the

SAS template (We will begin to use your lesson plan template on Day 2.)

• In your team, discuss school-wide student achievement data with your

principal or district leadership. (Be prepared to talk about student data, possible lesson topics, etc. at our next meeting.)

• Use the “discussion” tab on your “lesson planning” page to document/

summarize the above conversations, share ideas about elements you find most interesting, and to continue your team’s dialogue in a way that the project team can follow. Each team member is asked to contribute to the posting.

• Examine the “documentation”, “museum visit” and “sharing” tabs on your

school page to learn more about those requirements. Add thoughts to the discussion tabs in those areas, or begin to edit and add to the pages if you have ideas about how your team will address the topics.

• Day 2 will be at the museum and will be focused on making the field trip

connect to your lessons. Please think about this ahead of time ad document any discussions you have in the “museum visit” area using the discussion tab on that page. Specifically, we’d like you to have a dialogue about last year’s fieldtrip – what worked, what didn’t, what would you change, what focus could your students have this time?

• If you have time, please explore the integrated lesson planning resources

which are on the homepage of the wiki to familiarize yourself with what a cross-curricular lesson plan looks like.
