1. Introduction

The electric actuator MR-4859 is a device that allows control of:

• Four (4) output lines to command power contactors.• Three (3) “sniffer” inputs to supervise voltage on power lines (120…277VAC).• Three (3) voltage free digital inputs.• RS-485 MODBUS interface, with:

Bus termination resistor (ON/OFF selectable) Address selector for up to 63 addresses Possible Daisy Chain configuration of up to 63 actuators

The actuator has its own universal power supply (120…277VAC), so no external power adaptor is required for its operation.The MR-4859 can be connected directly to any SCALAMAX Gateway, which allows remote control of the actuator, and has all software functions built in.Two RS-485 interfaces allow easy daisy chain implementation with other actuators.In case the actuator is the last element in the daisy chain, a 120Ω resistor can terminate the RS-485 bus by means of a simple DIP-Switch, accessible from the terminal block area. Make sure only one (the last) actuator has the termination resistor enabled, otherwise, the RS-485 specifications won´t be met, resulting in erratic communication to other devices.The 4 positions of the “DIP-Switch” inside the actuator have the following functions:• Position 1-2-3 set the actuators´ address.• Position 4 of the actuator enables/disables the 120Ω termination resistor.

1.3 Wiring

Power Supply

The MR-4859 has built in its own universal switched power supply, which allows powering the device with mains voltages from 120VAC up to 277VAC. It´s maximum power consumption is 8W. A PTC at the power input protects the circuit and components of the device.The AC mains power is wired to the terminal 36 and 35, and the earth/ground can be wired to terminal 27.

RS-485 communication port

RS-485 supports local networks and multidrop communications links, using differential balanced lines over twisted pair. It is generally accepted that RS-485 can be used with data rates up to 10 Mbit/s and distances up to 1,200 m (4,000 ft), but not at the same time. A rule of thumb is that the speed in bit/s multiplied by the length in meters should not exceed 108. Thus, a 50 meter cable should not signal faster than 2 Mbit/s.RS-485 drivers use three-state logic, allowing individual transmitters to be deactivated. This allows RS-485 to implement linear bus topologies using only two wires, connected to terminals 33/34 and 35/36 for both wires called A and B.Ideally, the two ends of the cable will have a termination resistor connected across the two wires.Without termination resistors, reflections of fast driver edges can cause data corruption.Termination resistors also reduce electrical noise sensitivity due to the lower impedance. The value of each termination resistor should be equal to the cable characteristic impedance (typically,120 ohms for twisted pairs).

Discrete AC Inputs (120…277VAC)

There are four discrete AC inputs called AC1, AC2, AC3 and AC4, allowing supervision of four line voltages. Enabling the feature to check if a circuit breaker of a specific line is open or closed. Terminals 1 and 2 for “AC IN 1”, 4 and 5 for “AC IN 2”, 7 and 8 for “AC IN 3”, and 10 and 11 for “AC IN 4”.

The equipment located along a set of RS-485 interchangeablywires are called nodes.

The arrangement of the wires is as a connected series of point-to-point nodes, known as multidrop wiring or circuits

• Disconnect all power from all equipment including connected devices prior to removing any covers o doors, or installing or removing any accessories, hardware, cables, or wires.• Always use a properly rated voltage sensing device to confirm the power is off where and when indicated.

Digital Inputs (potential free contacts)

In contrast to the discrete AC inputs, these three Digital Inputs are potential free, that is, only ON/OFF switches with NO voltages can be wired to these inputs. These three inputs are named “DIG IN 1” on terminal block 13 and 14, “DIG IN 2” on terminal block15 and 16, and “DIG IN 3” on terminal block 17 and 18.

Digital Outputs (potential free contacts)

These three digital outputs are standard relay outputs supplying no voltage. These are standard relay contacts withstanding up to 277VAC and a maximum of 2 A output current.The outputs are named “DIG OUT 1” on terminal blocks 19 and 20, “DIG OUT 2” on terminal blocks 22 and 23, and “DIG OUT 3” on terminal blocks 25 and 26.

Advice

Remember, electrical subcontractors are not always equipped with the appropriate tools for installing electronic devices. Smaller screwdrivers(#1) are required for securing wires in the terminal blocks, network crimp tools are important as well in case IP devices have to be connected, etc.Equally important are insulated cable-end sleeves as in DIN 46228 (part 4) for 1,5mm² and other wire gauges as shown below.Obviously, equally important are all other tools common to all electrical installers, such as strippers, other screwdrivers, cutters, electrical tape, and crimp tools to fasten insulated cable-end sleeves to the wire ends.
