Part 2- Innovation

The team is required to produce the design concept of an effective earthquake warning

system. The proposed system must be reliable, accurate, easy to install, cost effective

and robust enough to be able to function in remote earthquake-prone areas.

1. Identify a datum.

2. Identify the key features and perform the decomposition exercise.

3. Produce the morphology chart.

4. From the morphology chart, produce plausible solution concepts and sketches

for each of the concepts generated.

5. Using the Pugh Evaluation Matrix:

a. Evaluate all the concepts generated, and

b. Select the most promising concept

6. Sketch the chosen concept with details.

1. Datum: Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) System

The main components of the Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) System are the

sensors and the earthquake alert center. The sensors consist of seismographs, which

detect and record earthquake waves and solar panels which supply energy to the

seismographs. After the sensors detect earthquake waves, they send signals to the

earthquake alert center.

The main function of the earthquake alert center is to receive signals from the sensors

and to alert nearby citizens to evacuate from the affected area. The warning message

can be transmitted almost instantaneously.
