MISSION STATEMENT Columbia Art Center is dedicated to providing artistic experiences in the visual arts for all ages and interest levels, and connecting with local arts organizations and community businesses to create diverse opportunities.

OVERVIEW Columbia Art Center offers year-round art classes, rotating gallery exhibitions, a gift shop, summer art camp for children, art parties, studio rentals, a Japanese garden, art and life enhancement lectures and more. Columbia Art Center is part of Columbia Association’s Community Services Department and has been part of Columbia Association for 35 years. It has been a functioning arts school for more than 40 years and was formerly known as the Antioch Visual Arts College.

From Faux to Abstraction Kelly WalkerArtist Kelly Walker discusses her action-packed, explosively colorful painting techniques in “Faux to Abstraction.” Walker is originally from Evansville, Indiana, and is now happily Baltimore-based. She is a profound talent — an “Artstar” — who makes a living producing artwork that is irrepressibly visible and magnetically embraced. Her work is imbued with a captivating, kinetic quality. Though inspired by visual artists like Warhol, Modigliani, Basquiat, Banksy and many others, Walker is an original. Matters of her mastery of commercial painting, as well as painting framed as fine art, will be part and parcel of this inspiring presentation. Her lecture will no doubt touch all who attend in an equal, soul-satisfying fashion.

Psychedelic Folk: Miles Gannett and Sean P. FinnMiles Gannett is a singer-songwriter/guitarist who has been writing and performing music since his single-digit years. Most recently, Miles founded and leads the psychedelic rock band Fractal Cat, which has released three albums of all-original material since 2012. His songs often include mystical themes and whimsical chord progressions. Miles will be accompanied by multi-instrumentalist Sean P. Finn on violin, trumpet and French horn. Sean and Miles perform together in Fractal Cat, as well as the psychedelic folk/country/bluegrass group The Shroom Pickers.Admission: $10 fundraiser for Little Patuxent Review

Science Fiction Short Films: A Look at the Future Marv ZelkowitzScience fiction films are a big business. The various Star Wars and Star Trek sequels and spinoffs are popular noisy adventures, as our heroes blast through space fighting aliens and malevolent robots and confronting all-around evil. They are thrilling sagas to watch.But there is a serious side to science fiction. Good science fiction tries to answer “what if” questions: What if robots had intelligence? What sort of personality would they develop? What if superheroes existed and they shocked and unsettled people? What sort of laws would be passed to govern them? Through a series of short films (8-10 minutes), we will view several amusing stories that address some of these questions.

Back From The Light: Documentary Screening and Live Discussion Robert Neal Marshall What would you do if a loved one died… then came back to talk about it? Have you dealt with a near death experience, either personally or as the loved one, family or friend of someone who has been on that journey? Lives are changed irreversibly by surviving such a traumatic event. Back From The Light is a documentary that addresses understanding and coping with these deeply personal changes for all involved. TEAM-BUILDING PAINTING ACTIVITIES

Individual Paintings: Each participant paints their own painting with the help of the instructor’s step-by-step instruction.

One-Step, Two-Step Painting: Paint one step, then move to a different seat to continue to the next step.

Collaborative Painting: Everyone in the group contributes to a large four-panel painting (4-foot by 3-foot). One collaborative painting is recommended for every 10 painters at the event. These works of art are ideal for displaying in the office.

Mystery Masterpiece: Our instructor takes you through the painting process step-by-step. The fun twist with this project is that no one knows what the painting will look like until it is completed.

ART THROUGH THE CURRICULUM FOR HOME-SCHOOLERS For ages 5-16 With Adam Goode Students will use art materials and techniques to explore the history of art while also looking at culture and the uses of modern technologies through the ages to influence and create advancements in civilization. YOUNG ARTIST MASTERY PROGRAM For ages 6-17 Columbia Art Center’s Young Artist Mastery Program offers students the chance to earn discounts* on future classes while honing their artistic abilities. Whether used as a means for creative self-expression or to prepare for further artistic endeavors, this program will work to expand students’ skill levels, stretch their creativity and build confidence.

Who Should Take This Program: Students ages 6-17 who have taken or will take classes or workshops at Columbia Art Center, starting Fall 2015 through the present session.

Program Description: Students who complete four classes within 15 months of enrollment will receive a Level 1 Certificate, which includes a free portfolio review and a 25% discount on a future class or workshop.

Participants who complete eight classes within 30 months of enrollment will receive a Level 2 Certificate, which includes a free portfolio review and a 50% discount on a future class or workshop.

Participants who complete 12 classes will receive a Level 3 Certificate, which includes a free portfolio review and a free class or workshop (up to a $100 value).

*Qualifying classes must be fee-based and meet for three or more sessions in order for students to receive a discount; three fee-based workshops will qualify as one class. Camps and School’s Out programs do not count toward the program.

DRAWING SERIES 101: ALL DRAWING MEDIUM For ages 9-12 With Sierra Faish Children love to draw freely and independently, but at a certain point, kids want to receive direction so they can take their artistic abilities to the next level. In order to do this, they must learn more technical skills and see the world with an artist’s eye. This course introduces methods to help reach their goals in a fun and productive way. CUT AND CONSTRUCT With Nancy Ziegenfus McIntosh Explore the potential compositions of thrown and handbuilt parts, and use these elements as building blocks with unlimited potential. Using the wheel as a springboard for ideas and process, participants in this five-week class experiment with altering the round form, handbuilding and other methods of construction to realize their artistic curiosities. Demonstrations include throwing component parts, cutting and reassembling forms off the original axis, stacking and nesting pieces, glaze discussion and more. BiographyLeah Lewman is an artist whose current work focuses on the visual relationship between a viewer and a landscape when an architectural window separates the two. Lewman has exhibited her work in spaces across the country, including the 2012 National Juried Exhibition at the Art Institute & Gallery in Salisbury featuring juror Ethan Karp of the OK Harris Gallery in New York; Landscape at Escape Velocity, a 2015 Exhibition at Fine Arts Complex 1101 in Tempe, Arizona; and the 2016 Wet Paint MFA Biennial Exhibition at the Zhou B. Art Center in Chicago. Lewman received her bachelor’s degree in painting in 2013 from Salisbury University. In May 2017, she received a master’s degree in 2-D Studio Art at the University of Arizona, Tucson, where she served for three years as Instructor of Record. She is currently based in Ellicott City and works as an adjunct instructor in painting and drawing at Frederick Community College. Her website is leahlewman.com.

and class cancellations. This information is also available on Columbia Association’s Facebook

DISCOUNTS Columbia Art Center programs are offered at two rates: one for those

with CA memberships or Columbia Cards, and the other for non-members. Non-members

who live on CA-assessed property may obtain a free Columbia Card to receive the member

rate for Art Center programs. To obtain a card, visit the Customer and Member Service Center

(6310 Hillside Court). Columbia Cardholders are also eligible for discounts at pools and

other facilities. Access to CA facilities and programs may be denied to a Columbia resident

(member or non-member) whose property is the subject of a covenant violation referred to

the Architectural Resource Committee for action.

SUPPLIES Adult students are responsible for purchasing their own materials for most

classes. Refer to course description for clarification or call Columbia Art Center for additional

CANCELLATION AND TUITION REFUNDS Columbia Art Center reserves

RENTAL RATESColumbia Art Center rentals are available in our art galleries, studio rooms and Japanese garden. Enjoy a unique setting filled with original art for your next event.

Art displays change regularly. All rental rates include use of kitchen and restrooms. Limited number of tables

and chairs are available for use. Renters are required to set up and clean rented studios. Catering is not provided

by Columbia Art Center. Please call Columbia Art Center at 410-730-0075 for more information or to reserve your rental.

*Rentals in galleries are contingent on type of show on exhibit.
