St. Anthony of Padua Church www.sapparish.org 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ August 28, 2016
Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time August 27/28, 2016
In today’s Gospel, Jesus challenges the social structure of the Pharisees and teaches his
hosts and their guests some profound lessons in humility. Pharisees maintained deep social di-
visions between who they considered “holy” and “unholy,” rich and poor, honored and des-
pised. They didn’t invite someone to a banquet or dinner who couldn’t reciprocate. And the
lowly, the poor, the crippled, the lame and the blind had no capacity to reciprocate. Good stew-
ards realize that if they embrace a humility that allows them to be
generous to those who cannot repay them, they give evidence of hav-
ing the kind of heart that will enjoy the Lord’s intimate friendship.
This week let’s reflect on our attitude towards those who cannot repay
our generosity. What is the extent of our hospitality toward others?
Are we generous with those who cannot repay us?

St. Serena of Rome, Empress, wife
of Emperor Diocletian: she was a Ho-
ly Roman Empress in the late third
century. She was converted and bap-
tized by Saint Ciriaco and practiced
the Catholic religion in the palace of
the emperor. She saved the lives of
many Christians by interposing her
i n f l u e n c e o n t o D i o c l e t i a n .
The cruelest persecution that was
triggered by the emperor against
Christians was in the last years of
his reign. During that time, Serena’s
heart was moved with pity causing
her to intercede repeatedly before
her husband to put an end to the
many martyrdoms but the storm of
cruelty did not abate. She developed
such an admiration for the courage
of the Christians being persecuted
that she herself was converted to
the Faith. She was baptized by St.
Ciriaco. Despite the severity with
which Christians were persecuted,
Serena could practice her faith in
the court unmolested by anyone. The
imperial court was inaccessible to the
judges, and the emperor loved his
wife too much to be inconvenienced
by her faith practices. The Church
raised her to the honor of Saint and
commemorates her feast on August
16, the day after the Assumption.

XXII Domingo Ordinario ~ 28 de Augusto de 2016 ~ 22nd Sunday of Ordinary Time

c r u e l í s i m a p er s e c u c i ó n q ue
desencadenó este emperador contra
los cristianos en los últimos años de
su reinado, después de un largo
período de paz, movió a piedad el
corazón de Serena, que intercedió
repetidamente ante su esposo para
que pusiera fin a tantos y tan crueles
martirios.
a c a b a r s u s d í a s e n p a z ,
reconfortando a los cristianos
perseguidos. La Iglesia la elevó al
honor de los altares y conmemora su
fiesta el 16 de agosto, el día
siguiente de la Asunción.

Act of Faith O my God, I firmly believe that you are
one God in three divine Persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit;
I believe that your divine Son became man and died for our sins, and that
he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe these and all the truths which the
Holy Catholic Church teaches, because you revealed them, who can neither
deceive nor be deceived.

What does the Catechism of the Catholic Church say? Paragraph 253:
The Trinity is One. We do not confess three Gods, but one God in three persons, the "consubstantial Trinity".83 The divine persons do not share the one divinity among themselves but each of them is God whole and entire: "The Father is that which the Son is, the Son that
which the Father is, the Father and the Son that which the Holy Spirit is, i.e. by nature one God."84 In the words of the Fourth Lateran Council (1215), "Each of the persons is that supreme
reality, viz., the divine substance, essence or nature."
Behold, God’s dwelling is with the human race. He will dwell with them and they will be his people and
God himself will always be with them. (Rv. 21:3)

Our Mission Statement
The mission of Saint Anthony of Padua Parish is to develop an atmosphere for the members
of our Faith Community to live out the four-fold goals of the Catholic Church:
Worship, Word, Service, & Community.
Prayer for Priests
O Jesus, our great High
Priest, Hear my
humble prayers on
behalf of your priest,
Father [N]. Give him a
deep faith, a bright and
firm hope and a
burning love
which will ever
increase in the course of
his priestly life. In his
loneliness, comfort him
in his sorrows,
strengthen him in his
frustrations, point out to
him that it is through
suffering that the soul is
purified, and show him
that he is needed by the
Church, he is needed by
souls, he is needed for
the work of
redemption. O loving
Mother Mary, Mother
of Priests, take to your
heart your son who is
close to you because of
his priestly ordination,
and because of the
power which he has
received to carry on the
work of Christ in a
world which needs him
so much. Be his
comfort, be his joy, be
his strength, and
especially help him to
live and to defend the
ideals of consecrated
celibacy. Amen.
Glorious Saint Serena, full of confidence in your
intercession, we are drawn to you with a special
devotion. Your charity and admirable reflection of
God are tips to help us in our misery. Comfort us
and intercede for our every desire and need, if it be
for the benefit of our souls. We lift up our miseries
and pains, our work, our needs and our good
wishes that we may reach eternal salvation
through the practice of good works and
the imitation of your virtues.
alma. Mira, pues, nuestras miserias y penas
nuestros trabajos y necesidades, nuestros buenos
