PROJECT REPORT 05/2008

THE CUSTOMER

With more than 65,000 employees, TRW Automotive is one of the world’s largest automotive suppliers. The leading supplier of high-quality spare parts for active and passive safety systems covers eight product areas – including brake systems, steering and chassis systems, engine components and passenger protection systems.

TRW Logistic Services GmbH was created as part of a long-term strategy for extending its European business activities.

At the same time, the new European central warehouse was built in Überherrn in Saarland with 15,000 m2 of storage and investment volume of 21 million euros.

MAXIMUM AVAILABILITY

In the new four-aisle high-bay ware-house, four LTW storage and retrieval machines, each with an overall height of 28.3 m, do all the work. The storage and retrieval machines are equipped with two load-carrying devices (single-depth telescopic forks) and each one transports up to 80 pallets/hour.

In order to achieve maximum availability, the storage and retrieval machines have each been equipped with a WLAN-camera on either side of the lifting slide. In the event of failure, this permits precise and prompt clarification of the cause in a user-friendly way. Maintenance personnel are also able to make a preliminary check of the on-site situation from outside the high-bay warehouse and, if necessary, to take initial action.

30,OOO PARTS

ONE WHOLE

3.000 tons per month, 30,000 different parts, 3,500 addresses for dispatch: with the new central ware-house, TRW now provides a much faster supply service from one single location to all European customers in the open market for spare parts.

“The increased warehouse capacity considerably improves the availability of our product range,” says Stefan Brost, Managing Director of TRW Logistic Services GmbH. “It helps us to emphasize our outstanding approach to customer service.”

As a general contractor for intra- logistics in high-bay storage, LTW is responsible for the smooth and efficient implementation of customer requirements: reliable line operation combined with excellent performance in high-bay storage.

THE PERIPHERY

Pallets are stored on the ground floor of the fully automatic high-bay warehouse – the outgoing storage station with adjoining order picking is on the first floor, at a height of approx. 8 m. The two floors are connected by two vertical conveyors. These are equipped with two in- dependently operating lifting slides and facilitate approx. 210 pallet movements/hour.As an alternative to whole-pallet- handling, which leads directly to the dispatch area of the logistics center, the outgoing goods can also be further processed in the order picking sector. Here, one of the transverse slide carriages adjoining the high-bay storage distributes up to 260 pallets/hour to four order picking areas, each with three direction-adjustable conveyor belts.

WAREHOUSE CONTROL

The steady flow of goods between storage and retrieval machines and materials handling equipment is guaranteed by the LTW warehouse control unit, including visualization means. LTW has also set up the inter-face to the superordinate warehouse management system on the part of the customer.
