Saginaw Valley State University College of Nursing and Health Sciences Building

A new College of Nursing and Health Sciences building at Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU) has received crucial funding from the State of Michigan. The State will provide $21 million and SVSU will issue $7 million in bonds to fi nance the remainder.

The College of Nursing and Health Sciences will house the schools of nursing, occupational therapy, kinesiology and social work under one roof. Construction of the $28 million facility is slated for 2009 and the laboratory and classroom facility may open in the summer of 2010.

"About 2,000 SVSU students are enrolled in health-science fi elds and attend classes in scattered locations across campus," said SVSU President Eric Gilbertson. "The new building will provide a central location."

SFI, Saginaw County Chamber, area business leaders and SVSU backers have lobbied in support of the project for a number of years. Statistics show that health sciences professions are the fastest growing and the State of Michigan will be facing a shortage of 7,000 nurses in two years.

The new facility will help meet the nursing demand, give opportunities for young people and support the region's medical facilities.

After several years of discussion, plans for the new terminal building for MBS International Airport were revealed at a September event.

Those in attendance, including legislative represen-tatives, government offi cials, community leaders and media representatives from throughout the region, were the fi rst to see and hear about the innovative design of the 75,000 sq. ft terminal building, targeted for completion in three to fi ve years.

The Airport Commission approved a new terminal building that will stand northeast of the present 1960s structure. Aviation architectural fi rm, Reynolds Smith & Hills Inc., presented the airstrip plan designed environmentally friendly. The terminal will feature steel-and-glass construction that relies heavily on natural lighting to reduce the need for electricity. White pine accents and other wood trim pay homage to Saginaw's lumbering history.

The terminal is to be funded without local taxes and instead will utilize funding under the FAA’s Airport Improvement Program, along with aviation and user fees earmarked specifi cally for airports.
