In addition to providing you with helpful safety tips, this brochure explains our Hurricane Deductible Endorsement and what expenses you may be responsible for if a hurricane damages your dwelling, detached structures or personal property.

American Family provides coverage to your property for damage caused by a hurricane but, like other insurers, does not cover every type of loss. It is important you understand what is covered and what is not.

Hurricane coverage: What is coveredAs long as your policy stays in force, we insure you against direct physical loss caused by a hurricane. A hurricane is classified as a windstorm. The following items are covered from wind damage that results from a hurricane (subject to policy limits):

•Dwellingormobile/manufacturedhome

•Garageorotherdwellingextensionormobile/manufacturedhomeextension(i.e.,detachedstructures)

Special deductible informationA special deductible applies to your policy for hurricane coverage. This deductible is different from the policy deductible that applies to other perils covered by your policy. The special deductible amount is determined by multiplying the hurricane deductible percentage listed on yourdeclarationspagebyyourCoverageA–DwellinglimitsorCoverageA–ManufacturedHomelimits.

Hurricane Deductible Endorsement: When it appliesThe special deductible applies to your policy from the momenttheNationalHurricaneCenteroftheNationalWeather Service issues a hurricane warning for any part of your state. It continues for the time period during which the hurricaneconditionsexistanywhereinyourstateandends24 hours following the termination of the last hurricane warningforanypartofyourstate.TheNationalHurricaneCenterdesignatesatropicalweathersystemtobeahurricane when sustained winds reach 74 miles per hour.

Flood informationFloods can occur ahead of, during or after a hurricane. Hurricanescanproduceaparticulartypeoffloodingcalledastorm surge, which is water that is pushed toward the shore

by the force of the winds, and can combine with the normal high tides to create a hurricane storm tide. The Hurricane Deductible Endorsement and your property policy do not cover losses resulting directly or indirectly from floods of any nature, storm surges or waves of any type. Thisfloodexclusionapplieswhetherthe flood loss is caused by natural, man-made or animal forces.

We do offer separate flood coverage through American Family Brokerage, Inc. for properties within communities that participateintheNationalFloodInsuranceProgram(NFIP).NotallcommunitiesparticipateintheNFIP.However,floodinsurancemay be still be available even if you do not live in a participating community.PleasecontactyourAmericanFamilyInsuranceagent for more information.

Hurricane damage preventionWhen a hurricane strikes it can quickly cause a lot of damage. Extremewindscancauseseveralkindsofdamagetoabuilding, threateningyouandyourfamily’ssafety.Duringhighwinds, windspeed fluctuates and may change direction, placing pressure on all parts of the building structure. These wind pressures may cause building components to fail.

Also, when wind speeds are high, pieces of debris can become airborne missiles and cause injuries.

It’s been shown that by maintaining a sealed envelope—keeping the outside wind from getting into your home—you may be able to minimize damage to your home and reduce the potential for injury.

Mobile/Manufactured Homes

Hurricanes can quickly cause considerable damage over a wide area. American Family wants to help you protect your family and property against this natural disaster.
