R. Marimuthu, a staff nurse at a government hospital, was stranded in his home in East Tambaram, with water completely inundating the premises. “I just about managed to get out with my certificates and I’m taking shelter at a nearby school,” he said. His wife, also a nurse, managed to get to work at Egmore as she was on a morning shift when the rains were not very heavy, but is now stuck at Pallavaram, unable to make it home as the trains have stopped, he said. “I don’t know how she is going to come back,” he added. While most hospitals have been functioning normally with both outpatient and inpatient services carrying on, extra measures have been taken to ensure safety. At Ra- jiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, some staff members were allowed to leave early as rain bat- tered the city throughout the day. However, emergency services were fully staffed, a senior official said. Some doctors at Global Hos- pitals too, left a little early, as did non-essential staff at Apollo Hospi- tals. At Government Kilpauk Medi- cal College, which is waterlogged, motors are operating to pump wa- ter out, said dean Narayana Babu. “We have buses for our nurses and have told our junior doctors that they can stay on in the hostels if necessary. Food supplies and clothes will be provided. For doc- tors who are required to come to the hospital in the night, we have arranged for them to use our ambu- lances,” said N. Sathyabhama, di- rector of medical services at Apollo Hospitals. Ambulance drivers have been hit hard as the damaged roads made tough going. “While the traffic is not too bad as very few people are driving, the condition of the roads is making it very difficult. We take 40 minutes to get to a destination that normally takes about 20,” one employee of the 108 ambulance service said. In some parts such as Meenambak- kam however, traffic pile-ups con- tinued into the late afternoon lead- ing to delays, another employee said. The 108 ambulance service has been inundated with flood-related calls and are collaborating in res- cues along with other services, said B. Prabhudoss, head, marketing and hospital relations, GVK EMRI, which operates the service. “We have allotted five additional ambulances for Tambaram for flood rescues. Pregnant women are our priority and we have shifted many of them. We have received at least 1,000 additional calls over and above our usual calls on Tuesday,” he said. Ambulance drivers had a tough time negotiating many stretches — PHOTO: R. RAVINDRAN Hospital services severely affected ZUBEDA HAMID CHENNAI: Continuous rain since the early hours of Tuesday led to the breaching of 35 major lakes, mostly in the southern parts of the Chennai Metro- politan Area, rendering thou- sands of residents homeless. There was also a complete breakdown of essential ser- vices. Those who travelled to work with great difficulty were, on their way back home, stranded mid-way as most of the transport services went into a tailspin. When the day ended, the city was completely battered, having received wounds that would take a long time to heal. Arterial roads became un- motorable, leaving thousands of commuters stranded and residents marooned. The lakes that breached in- clude Kalavakkam, Thirukaz- hukundram, Korapattu, Sho- nalur, Perungalathur, Thenmelpakkam, Irumpuliy- ur, Peerkankaranai, Keelkatta- lai, Pallavaram, Pallikaranai and Mudichur. “In addition to this, minor breaches have also occurred in most of the other waterbo- dies. We have taken 23000 residents to 99 relief camps in Kancheepuram district. But lakhs of residents are ma- rooned in the southern sub- urbs. All roads are inundated, disrupting traffic. We are un- able to take food packets to marooned residents,” said an official. Traffic on arterial roads such as GST Road, Rajiv Gandhi Salai, East Coast Road, Outer Ring Road and Poonamalle High Road was thrown out of gear. The traffic police diverted traffic on arte- rial roads, advising motorists to avoid stretches such as GST Road, East Coast Road and Rajiv Gandhi Salai. Most of the 471 bus route roads in Chennai Corporation limits remained inundated. Seven subways including Pazhavanthangal, Thillai Ganga Nagar, St.Thomas Mount, Meenambakkam, Ga- nesapuram, Duraisamy and Rangarajapuram were closed for traffic. Several residents of south Chennai who had just carried out repairs in their flooded houses, found to their chagrin that their houses were flood- ed again. R. Nagarajan, a resident of New Kuberan Nagar in Madi- pakkam, said he had been liv- ing in the area for 40 years but this was the first time his house was flooded with knee- deep water. “Most of our valuables are gone. We don’t know how to manage the situation here. The Madipakkam lake is al- most full now,” he added. In Ram Nagar North in Ma- dipakkam, many residents left their homes to safer places as water was at least three feet high, as early as afternoon. Sandhya Shivakumar said they sent her father-in-law to her relatives’ house as soon as water entered her house. “It is the fourth time that water is entering our house this monsoon. We have just locked it and moved upstairs. There is no respite for any of us here,” she added. Many by-lanes in Madipak- kam, Hindu Colony and Lakshmi Nagar in Nanganal- lur, Ram Nagar in Velachery and Sriram Nagar in Kotturpu- ram had severe waterlogging. Radhika, a resident of Vela- chery, said her compound wall had collapsed this monsoon. “The rains have not stopped and we just don’t know how to handle the situation here,” she added. Ragu As 35 lakes breach their banks, Chennai goes under again ALOYSIUS XAVIER LOPEZ AND SUNITHA SEKAR Complete breakdown of essential services; arterial roads become unmotorable; most bus routes remain inundated. Residents scramble for safety again CHENNAI: The heavy rain that lashed the city and suburbs brought road traffic to a grind- ing halt but the operation of suburban train services on all sections for a good part of the day was a relief to residents. However, train services be- tween Chennai Beach and Tambaram were hit due to flooding of suburban plat- forms at Tambaram. A senior official of the Southern Railway said train services between Chennai Beach and Tambaram were terminated at Pallavaram be- tween 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. be- cause platforms 1 to 4 were flooded at Tambaram station. But, train services from Chen- nai Beach to Chengalpattu and Thirumalpur proceeding via Tambaram were operated with delayed arrival and de- parture, he added. S. Murugan, a resident of Civil Aviation Colony, Nanga- nallur, said it took him more than two hours to reach the Palavanthangal railway sta- tion from Chengalpattu be- cause the train was stopped at various points along the route. The Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) services from Chennai Beach to Vela- chery and train services to Thiruvallur and Gummidi- poondi were operated, but with delays. As the MRTS is on an ele- vated stretch for a major por- tion and the Velachery rail- way station was not flooded, trains could be operated nor- mally, said a Southern Rail- way official. Due to flooding of railway tracks on the Tam- baram-Villupuram section, the Southern Railway can- celled 31 long-distance trains which were to start from Chennai Egmore. 12, long dis- tance trains were diverted. Several flights were de- layed by the heavy rain. Airport sources said from early morning on Tuesday, most flights were affected. Several flights from the air- port including those of Air In- dia, Jet Airways and IndiGo to various cities including Ko- chi, Colombo, Delhi, Pune, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Singa- pore, Kolkata, Port Blair and Kuala Lumpur were delayed. Also, those flights arriving from Mumbai, Delhi, Abu Dhabi, Pune and Hyderabad landed late. On gloomy day, MRTS services a ray of hope R. SRIKANTH AND SUNITHA SEKAR CHENNAI: Due to sluggish traffic movement, commuters were stuck on the roads for hours on end. Since the MTC bus services were affected, many turned to train services to re- ach their respective destina- tions. However, train services were also hit on certain sec- tions. The continuous rains left many parts of the city inun- dated. “I left Sardar Patel Road around 2.30 p.m. and headed for Anna Salai. But, by 4.15 p.m., I had reached only North Boag Road. The vehicles were moving very slowly,” said An- uradha Raghuraman, a home- maker. Sudeesh, a marketing executive, complained that bus services were affected. “I waited for nearly an hour for a bus on route 21 on Anna Salai. I then took an MRTS service to reach my house in Mandavelli,” he said. According to police offi- cers, often, water entered the engines and exhaust pipes of vehicles. “In Vadapalani, Sai- dapet and T. Nagar, many mo- torists were stranded,” said a police officer. The entire traffic police force was on the road trying to ensure the free flow of ve- hicles. “A holiday should have been declared for all govern- ment offices. This would have reduced the number of vehi- cles,” said a police source. Meanwhile, a senior MTC official claimed that many buses were stuck in the jam. “The vehicles were not moving freely in some parts of the city like Saidapet. We thought of improving the ser- vices once the rain stopped. But it never happened,” said an official. Residents were also left in the lurch as cab services were not available. “None of the drivers were willing to take risks and spoil their cars. Be- sides, many autorickshaws were also not plying as water entered the vehicles,” said C. Cyril, a resident of Santhome. A traffic police officer said that had they ensured that traffic was smooth on the ar- terial roads. “We diverted all the buses through the Banga- lore Highway and they went through Sriperumbudur,” said an officer.
