I respectfully acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land, the Yugambeh and Jagera people and recognise that this area has
always been a place of teaching and learning.
I extend my respect to the Elders, past, present and emerging for they hold the memories, the traditions, the cultures and hopes of
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.
Welcome back to Term 2, 2019.
School Priorities
Our School Priorities have not changed and remain our relentless focus to improve student learning outcomes.
To implement programs to improve student reading:
To implement targeted intervention strategies for Inclusive practices:
To deepen teacher knowledge and expertise by building capability aligned to the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers:
To implement targeted classroom school practices to improve staff and student wellbeing and engagement: New Head of Inclusive Education
We are very excited to introduce Mrs Jessica Dickson to our school community as the new Head of Inclusive Education. Jessica
began the school year with us working as the EALD Lead Teacher and has won the role of Head of Inclusive Education.
New Prep Class
At the start of Term 2 we commenced our new Prep Class - P.6. We are so excited by our large number of Prep enrolments and
it is always our focus to ensure that we meet Department guidelines on class sizes. Miss Isobelle Clark is the teacher of our
new Prop Class and is looking forward to meeting with all parents and carers as soon as possible.
Attendance Hero Parade
On Friday of Week 1, we had a special parade to celebrate our Attendance Heroes. Attendance Heroes are students who have
above 95% attendance for the entire Term. We had over 380 students who attended school over 95% during Term 1 which is a
great achievement. At the start of Term 3 we will be celebrating for our Term 2 Attendance Heroes.

Mabel Park Courageous Lion
It was also very exciting at our Attendance Hero Parade as we were able to introduce our newest
member of our staffing community. The Mabel Park Courageous Lion arrived and will make
appearances at assemblies to acknowledge successes and also at our sporting and special events.
We are yet to name the Mabel Park Courageous Lion and are wanting each class to make a
nomination. We will then be presenting the class names at our Week 4 assembly. We will then vote
and the most popular name will be given to our newest staff member.
Attendance Awards
We are continuing this Term with our P&C Grocery Bag attendance prizes, with all students who have attendance over 85%
going in the draw to take home a bag full of groceries. This draw provides a wonderful opportunity for parents and students to
share and engage in the rewards of attending school regularly. We thank the P&C for their support.
Mrs Sally Hawkins heading off to Metro Region
Many parents/carers and students will know Mrs Hawkins very well, as she has spent many years at Mabel Park State School.
Mrs Hawkins will be working for the remainder of Term 2 in the Metro Region Office in a promotional role. We wish Mrs
Hawkins all the best and look forward to her return. Thank you.
P&C Meeting
Our first P&C meeting for this Term is Wednesday 8 May, from 3.00pm – 4.00pm.
All welcome to attend!

Welcome Back to School:
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all of our staff, students, parents & carers and wider school community back to school
for Term 2. I am looking forward to another fantastic term working alongside our staff and students to ensure our high expectations for
attendance, behaviour and academic improvement are delivered and that our students are provided with the opportunities to achieve
to their fullest potential each and every single day.
School Photos:
School photos were distributed to students at the end of Term 1. If you ordered a school photo pack and your child has not yet received
it, please contact the office so we can follow this up.
Senior Shirts:
I am anticipating the delivery of the Year 6 senior shirts within the next couple of weeks. Once received, these will be promptly
distributed to students who ordered a shirt.
Transition Programs:
Over the coming weeks and leading into Semester 2, I will be co-ordinating our annual transition programs for students graduating
primary school at the end of 2019. To support the co-ordination of these programs with our local feeder high schools, I will be asking
parents of Year 6 students to provide information regarding the intended high school destination for their child. I thank these parents in
advance for their support in providing this information. This data will better enable me to tailor our transition programs to our
students’ needs and I look forward to supporting our students as they reach this exciting juncture in their educational journey.
Reading Eggs & Mathletics: Every child and family at Mabel Park State School has unlimited access to ABC Reading Eggs and Mathletics. Both of these programs are paid for by school subscription and the FREE Apps can be accessed on any computer, tablet, smart phone or device at no cost to parents.
Reading Eggs & Mathletics are aligned to the Australian Curriculum and provide each child with an individual program they can work
through at their own pace. Reading Eggs gives families access to over 2000 eBooks as well as literacy games and activities. Mathletics is
the world’s #1 Mathematics online learning website and allows students to test their mathematicals skills against other students.

Dear Parents,
Every fortnight we will be focusing on one Reading Comprehension Strategy across the whole school. The focus strategy will be announced on Assembly each Monday. Over time, good readers learn to use a range of strategies to make meaning when reading. Please find some information about this fortnight's strategy below that might be useful when reading with your child.
Our Comprehension Focus for Week 1 and 2 is: Predicting
Predicting is a useful reading strategy as it helps us think about what to expect when we read. What we know already (our prior knowledge) helps us to predict.
When we predict we can use the
title
front and back covers
blurb
pictures or diagrams
table of contents
We can think about the
topic
author
text form – is it a narrative? factual report? recount?
Good readers keep making predictions and adjusting them all through their reading.
