There was fire in the eyes and grit in their step ready to compete and show the rest of the schools in the state that Waikerie High School is outstanding in Agriculture. Wednesday 7 th , was an early start, having woken up at 5:30am to be at the Show Grounds by 7am to prepare and ensure the animal enclosures were clean and ready for the day. This day saw a number of different events occur, plus the arrival of four more excited students with Mr McLaren for the sheep leading competition. It all started at 8:30am with the sheep, who were judged on a number of qualities from the pen of best three, fleece value, estimated carcase value, skin value, weight gain and the overall champion. After a full day of handling sheep and ensuring their animals had plenty of feed and water the students were unfortunately robbed of a placing in any category, however the experience that the students had in meeting new people and talking to industry reps made up for the lack of ribbons. Also on the Wednesday 7 th , the goats commenced their competition with the weights, muscle depth and fat depth being collected for each. After a nerve wracking few minutes two of our goats were disqualified from competition as they didn’t make the appropriate weight ranges. Disheartened, these students departed with their goats only to be called back to be re-weighed as the scales were out of calibration. Succeeding in remain in the running for all competitions the goats returned to their pens where the students prepared them for the Grand Parade, which started at 3:00pm. Thursday 8 th , saw the students up bright and early again, eager to see their goats and prepare them for the big day of judging. After another cleaning, the students and goats were ready for their big day of showing and competing. First off the rank was Deanna Wyld with the goat Kevin, Emily Adams with Ace and Tommy Hurley with Shaggy in Class 1 Chevon. After much nail biting and a few hopeful reordering’s of the line-up Deanna Wyld and Kevin walked away with a 4 th place and Tommy Hurley and Shaggy would have had 8 th (unfortunately they didn’t have ribbons for 8 th ). Continued from page 1 filled and then the judge started the re-order, nervously watching as the last competitor for Waikerie was examined and shuffled to the side allowing Daniel to claim 3rd in the Heavy Export Class.

Friday the 9th saw 10 weary and tired competitors wake up and travel to the show for the last event, the schools Pig Handling Competition. After a quick wash, the pigs were ready. The competition started at 10am with the students learning a simple yet difficult course to move the pigs through. Eventually it was Waikerie’s turn to be represented with Daniel Fullagar and Tommy Hurley stepping into the ring. Unfortunately our pigs were not being cooperative causing many delays and difficulties to occur during the event. Once finished, Sarah Reusch and Emily Adams stepped in and proved, again after last year’s effort, that little pigs do not follow instructions. Finally the anticipation built and in stepped James McLean and Craig Neal ready and raring to outshine all the competitors. Through excellent team work and excellent training these two gentlemen sped through the course with little stress to the animals. This quick movement and calm approach resulted with both boys walking away with a 1st Place ribbon to show for their efforts.

Special thanks to Laurena and Chris Grieger who were outstanding help in organising and preparing for the event. All the parents who supplied food, which was excellent, Riverhaven Enterprises (Mark McLean) who is the supplier of our pigs, Borung Merino Stud (Brenton Kroehn) for supplying the sheep for show, Rob McLaren for driving the students down for the sheep leading and all those who supported the team in some way or another. Finally thank you and well done to Josh McKay, Daniel Rowe, Tommy Hurley, Shayne Napper, Deanna Wyld, Sarah Reusch, Emily Adams, Daniel Fullagar, Jesse Ebert-Hudson, Damon Perks, Barry Cavanaugh, Joseph Whitehead, James McLean and Craig Neal for taking the time to prepare and train the animals for the show.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

TAFE SA and WAIKERIE HIGH SCHOOL – PARTNERSHIP IN

LEARNING

Dear Parent, As Principal of Waikerie High School, I’m pleased to report that I’ve reached agreement with TAFE SA for us to use their building as a

much-needed SPACE for learning. At present we are using it as a learning hub around “Quicksmart” lessons in Literacy and Numeracy. We are looking to further develop the spaces around Performing Arts and a Learning Hub for the high school.

Page 3: TRUST ACHIEVEMENT COMMUNITYwaikeriehs.sa.edu.au/docs/newsletters/2016/...Anne Leahy Music Teacher DEBATE UPDATE I am extremely pleased to report that all debating teams have made it

TAFE SA’s need for space at the Waikerie Campus has steadily decreased over time, with all TAFE SA training in the area now being conducted at off-campus sites, online or at other TAFE SA campuses. This has created the opportunity for Waikerie High School (WHS) to move into the unused space.

TAFE SA will continue to deliver Automotive, Electrotechnology, Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration, Hairdressing, Accounting, Financial Services and other training as needed in and around Waikerie using the flexible training methods that people asked for in the Improving Access to Education consultation conducted last year, such as online learning, mobile classroom units and hands-on training in local facilities.

Any TAFE SA students affected by these pending changes will be contacted and supported to ensure they can complete their qualifications with minimal disruption. These developments in the Riverland are truly exciting and promise great outcomes for students, the community and local industry. The transition will occur gradually over the next six months.

Should you have any questions regarding TAFE SA training, please do not hesitate to contact the Waikerie High School front office, TAFE SA’s Regional Business Development Officer for the Riverland, Brett Ancell (email [email protected]) or TAFE SA Regional Manager Julie Robertson on (08) 8595 2605.

STEMWORKS As many of you might be aware of Waikerie High School is one of 139 South Australian public schools selected to be part of the $250 million STEM Works program. We have been provided with STEMWORKS funding of $2.5 million to develop our facilities for learning in STEM.

STEM is the name given to the study of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. These subjects are often taught together in recognition of their interrelationship.

Across the state the program will deliver upgraded learning facilities for around 75,000 students, or more than 45% of students attending South Australian government schools.

Projects will be delivered across the state to create local jobs and use local materials whenever possible. The projects will be fast tracked, with projects scheduled for completion by the end of 2018.

When combined with cutting edge teaching and learning, STEM Works will help prepare students for the jobs of the future. I will keep you informed as we progress through the stages of development of this very exciting project.

UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE

All students considering a pathway into University should have entered their preferences on the SATAC website. Students have the opportunity to make changes up until the 30th September. Please ensure you have completed this

process to avoid any late fees. Next Wednesday 21st September, students will be sitting the Flinders University Test which is simply another tool that can help gain entrance to this site.

SUBJECT SELECTION FOR 2017 This process has now finished and we are currently looking at classes for next year. Thank you to all students and parents for your cooperation with the new Web Based Preferences system. This has been highly successful and allows for a quicker, more efficient process. Any students that need re-counselling due to class numbers will be notified.

END OF TERM Reminder to all that this is a particularly busy time in terms of assessment. Please continue to support students to ensure they meet deadlines. For many of the senior students, a focus will shift from completion of folio work and move to exam preparation. We encourage students to communicate with their teachers to help with demands.

WAIKERIE HOSTS 5 –A –SIDE SOCCER CARNIVAL

The four Riverland Secondary Schools competed in the annual Year. 8-10 small sided soccer carnival last Thursday the 8th of September. The games were played in high spirit and students showed great sportsmanship. Low importance is placed on winning and the event is more about getting the four schools together and giving students the opportunity to play soccer in a competitive environment. The rain held off until the final few minutes of the final round so most students were in involved in five or six 15 minute games.

Particular thanks goes to the players that not only played but umpired and then packed up in the rain.

Year 10 student Blake Schober was excellent in fulfilling his administration roll by keeping an eye on the timing of games and collating the results. Thanks to Ms Lee Shaw, Mrs Cheri Layton and Mrs Virginia Hillier for their help administrating and providing first aid on the day. The Sports Centre kept the masses happy with food and drink and the council again showcased our town’s amazing facilities with the grounds in pristine condition. A reminder that the school will reward students with these sporting opportunities that show the values of the school and are keeping up to date academically (traffic light data is used as a guide).
