Trumpet, Cornet, Baritone
Beginning Band Primer Part 1
by Mike Davies©
1
Trumpet, Cornet, Baritone: The Basics
Instrument Care:
✔ Check boxes when you understand each step.
❑ Always open the instrument case right side up on a stable surface. Never use a music stand to hold instrument.
❑ Treat your mouthpiece with care so that it does not become stuck in the instrument.
❑ Keep valves oiled always ❑ Keep slides lubricated/greased. ❑ Remove condensation moisture
frequently with water keys and before storing in case.
❑ Brass instruments can be cleaned in warm soapy water in a sink or tub. Check with teacher for instructions.
❑ Mouthpiece can be washed with soap and water.
❑ Avoid storing items in case other than instrument and oil.
Putting Trumpet/Cornet Together:
✔ Check boxes when you understand each step.
❑ Always open the instrument case right side up on a stable surface. Never use a music stand to hold instrument.
❑ Hold trumpet/cornet with left hand around valves with bottom fingers extended.
❑ While holding the instrument with your left hand, carefully place the mouthpiece into the mouthpiece receiver and gently twist it to the right.
❑ Don’t force or “pop” mouthpiece into leadpipe because it can become stuck in the instrument.
❑ Check valves to see if they need to be oiled.
❑ To oil valves, carefully twist valve collar and pull valve up part way. Add 2 to 3 drops of oil to each valve. Slide valves back in place and gently twist valve collar until tight (not too tight).
❑If there are questions about oiling valves, please check with teacher.
2
Holding the Trumpet/Cornet:
✔ Check boxes when you understand each step.
❑Put left hand around valves. Left hand supports instrument (Baritone supports instruments on lap).
❑Put 2nd finger in valve ring (if available)
❑Extend 3rd and 4th fingers of left hand
❑Place right thumb on lead pipe and pinky in finger hook.
❑1st finger is placed on 1st valve, 2nd finger is placed on the 2nd valve and 3rd finger is placed on 3rd valve.
❑Since the first note will be the “E” note, hold down 1st and 2nd valve.
❑ Check posture, which should include sitting with back strait and both feet on the floor. It is recommended to sit on the front part of the chair with feet shoulder width apart and the left foot slightly forward.
❑ Check elbow position, left and right elbow should be out. AVOID pointing bell either up or in your lap. This is bad technique. Trumpet/cornet bell should be pointed at music stand.
Playing the first note on the Trumpet/Cornet:
✔ Check boxes when you understand each step.
❑ Shape the inside of the mouth by sayin “O” and then shape your lips by saying “M”.
❑ Make sure lips have firm corners, but relaxed in the middle
❑ Breathe through the mouth.Take full breath(s) and blow while aiming air thought the center of lips.
❑ Use airstream to help buzz lips.
❑ Try first with mouthpiece only. While buzzing lips, center mouthpiece in the middle of your lips so that it is equally centered.
❑ Use tongue to control air e sound by thinking the word “da or “ta”. Use tongue to help start and stop the air. The air should vibrate the tip of the reed to make the sound.
❑ After you have mastered this with the mouthpiece, try putting it in the instrument. First note is “E” note which is played with the 1st and 2nd valves pressed down.

The Staff: The next step in reading music is understanding how the staff is used.
The Staff And Clefs
This set of 5 lines are used for writing the letter name of the note also known as the pitch name. The pitch names are based on the musical alphabet A B C D E F G.
The note heads are placed either on the line or in-between the lines in a space.
Example 1
Example 2
The Treble Clef: This symbol is also known as a treble clef (or G clef) and it is used to designate the note names on the lines and spaces for Flute, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone Trumpet, and Bells.
Example 3
The Bass Clef: This symbol is also known as a Bass clef (or F clef) and it is used to designate the note names on the lines and spaces for Trombone, Tuba, Bassoon, Cello and Bass,

Line Names, Space Names and Ledger Lines
Notes have a letter name based on the musical alphabet of “A B C D E F G ” (remember that notes can have rhythm names too). The letter name depends on what line or space the note (note-head) is written on.

Example 6
The next step in reading music is reading the rhythms on the lines and spaces of the staff. Don’t forget the other music symbols like the “Meter Signature”. It tells how to divide and count the beat. Also, bar-lines divide the beats into groups of beats called measures. Measure numbers help us find our place, and the double bar-line is the end.
