The Trumpet Call

Pastor’s Corner  This past week has been a tumultuous one in both our nation and ourworld. The city of Baltimore, MD has erupted in violence and protest, whilethe city of Kathmandu, Nepal and much of the surrounding countryside issuffering the devastating effects of a major earthquake. When we prayedabout the earthquake recovery last Sunday, I mentioned to the congrega-tion that our Eastern Pennsylvania Conference has a medical missionaryin Nepal, Dr. Mark Zimmerman, who serves along with his wife, Deirdre, and their two sons in the capital of Kathmandu, Nepal. Mark grew up in theLehman United Methodist Church in Hatboro, outside of Philadelphia.

I am pleased to say that Mark and his whole family are safe, along with allother United Methodist mis-sionaries sent by our GeneralBoard of Global Ministries.Sadly, the same cannot besaid for the more than 5500who are reported dead as ofthis writing, and there are stillmany more missing and entireareas not even reached sincethe earthquake occurred.UMCOR has immediately re-

leased $90,000 to deal with the urgent water crisis in Nepal, with muchmore aid coming in the weeks and months ahead. The Mission Team here

at ESUMC will keep you updated on the situation, and there is a way tohelp right away (see article on "Mother's Day Mission" elsewhere).

The situation in Baltimore is also tragic, but for vastly different reasons. Itis a complex situation, yet as noted by a Facebooker yesterday on hisposting, everyone wants to simplify it and make judgments about what isgoing on with no attempt at understanding. He called on people to withhold

judgment and to pray instead; I agree! I also appreciate what our Bishop,Peggy Johnson, wrote about the situation on her blog, which is on theConference website (http://www.epaumc.org/news/stories/unheard ).Bishop Johnson was raised in a suburb of Baltimore and served for 20years as pastor of a deaf church very close to where the greatest damage

and destruction has taken place. As our overall spiritual leader, I invite youto read, meditate, and pray on her thoughtful words about the city sheloves so much.

This Sunday, we will hear stories of answered prayer to encourage us tothink about the power of prayer in our individual and corporate lives. If youhave an "answered prayer" story, it's still not too late to submit it. Justplease email me by Friday evening ( [email protected]). We will have anew bulletin format this Sunday, and we solicit your comments and ideasas we move forward with it. I'll see you on Sunday as we celebrate theSacrament of Communion once again at all three services.

Mother's Day Mission: Two Ways to Help!

We want to honor all of our mothers here at ESUMC, andhose in the community who do so much to help others.Sometimes churches offer small gifts to all the mothers onMother's Day. That is a lovely thing to do and it honors

hose who have done so much for all of us. But what abouthe mothers who struggle and whom no one honors? Thisyear, we're going to reach beyond our walls to try to help.

The St. Paul Lutheran Church in Tannersville has been inhe news as a church which is seeking to reach the poor inhe community where they serve. It operates the Walter &Mary Alice Strunk Food Pantry on Tuesdays, and has beenoverwhelmed by the number of persons needing food assis-ance. As it is the only food pantry in that part of MonroeCounty, it is easy to see why it is so busy. We'd like to blesshis food pantry, especially since one of our members, MarySchneider has been helping it to get established. We'd love

for every family who comes on Mother's Day to bring one or

more non-perishable items from the list below to bless theStrunk Food Pantry at St. Paul. These are the items that amost in demand at the Strunk Food Pantry:

Hot and cold cereal

Instant (just add water) potatoes

Powdered and canned milk

Peanut butter and jelly

Pasta and tomato sauce

Macaroni and cheese

Various kinds of canned beans and vegetables

Canned meats

We won't turn away any donations of non-perishable foodbut please strive to find and purchase things on this list firso that our contributions can be the greatest blessing to thfood pantry. Mary will insure that our donations get to St.Paul Lutheran Church as soon as possible after Mother'sDay.

If you would like to be a blessing to mothers and families

overseas who are suffering because of the earthquake inNepal, you have a great opportunity to help on Mother'sDay. We will have special envelopes marked "NepalEarthquake Relief" for your use, or clearly mark a missionenvelope that you want it used for this purpose. Thechecks can be made payable to the church, and we willimmediately send them to UMCOR for the relief effortsalready underway. We can be comforted by the fact thatour denomination has been active in mission efforts in Nepal for many decades through the United Mission to Ne-pal, and UMCOR will know how our funds can be used tohave the greatest impact. Thanks for your support ofthese two missions, one local and one far away, as we

honor ALL of our mothers!
